A price drop isnt necessary this year. Nothing is going to stop PS4/One from sellong this holiday since thr majority of peoplr buying those consoles at launch a big fans of said console and it makes no sensr for Nintendo to sell at a loss. From Aug thru the end of the year Nintendo has a stong first party line up, along with a new marketing campaign, Wii U will see a good boost. Also we will see plenty of retailer discounts and bundles so that alone cancels out the need for a true price cut. I could see the Basic all the way down to $199 on black friday just to get rid of it and the Deluxe plus an extra game for $299.

Im guessing Wii U will get a price drop in April alongside Mario Kart to start off the fiscal year. That is when PS4/One launch hype will have died down and it will be a good time to strike when the competitors sales start leveling out.

Counterpoint:  Here are some of the WiiU's advantages:

-  Less power (lower electricity bills)
-  Less game support (gives you more time with your girlfriend)
-  No Blu-ray (Less wear and tear on your console from watching movies on it all of the time)
-  Better looks (doesn't look like an eraser)
-  Most expensive Nintendo console ever (gives the impression that it's super powerful)
-  Name confusion (allows the original Wii to sell better)
-  Nintendo consoles can generally sell less at a lower price than Sony consoles (Uh... I got noth'n)

1. Power is meaningless. the most powerful console never wins. both facts backed up by history.
2. You forgot to add the price of PS+ to the price of PS4. A lot of consumers wont like that.
3. The PS4 looks to me like an updated Wii. that might confuse your average consumer also.
4. The difference in price is more than $50. Online is free on Wii U. Ps gamers have to pay to even update games as anything online has to be paid for now.

They fight for two very different markets. Nintendo is competing against itself, so yes I do believe a price cut is called for. The only risk is that Nintendo fuck up so hard that Sony & MS absorb their market over time. Odds are that won't happen, and a price cut combined with their upcoming game library would definitely ensure that.
