Forums - Gaming Discussion - Next-Gen console games 'have a familiar feel'

It appears apart from graphic tweaks Next-Gen console games are essentially little different to Last-Gen in gameplay, what have we really changed going into this new generation?

After watching entertainment and technology journalist Marc Cieslak comment on this it has got me thinking

What is your view on the the Next-Generation of gameplay based of what we have seen so far?

Maybe it's most gamers themselves that don't want change which is holding innovation back, are we a conservative group at heart? Will Next-Gen just be the same old stuff we have digested for years?

I would guess it will take a year before we see some type of innovation. Most of the launch window stuff seems to be games that could have or is being released on the 360/PS3. That indicates very little benefit of the next gen power and graphic capabilities right out of the gate, and more so to your point, limited innovation.

Why they went about it the wrong way I did like that ms was doing something different and not just releasing a 360.5
But now all we are getting is a ps3.5 and a 360.5

With so many years for developers to find new things to do with a pad, it's already been damn near perfected, most of the avenues to approach developing new gameplay ideas have been tried and tested. It's all down to refining the styles we have at the moment, for any real innovation to come around it's going to take a grand move for the whole industry and lots of cash to really get something new and fresh and to be honest i can't see where it's going to come from.

The only thing i can see coming from this generation apart from pretty graphics is move of a move to MMO gaming bigger worlds with lots of people

I felt like that in 2007.

Nowadays I only get to play the absolute masterpieces that I really enjoy, and waste my money on booze and trips and memorable stuff like that. When gaming evolves and get's pushed forward in a new wii and ds style revolution, maybe I'll be more active.

For me Naughty Dog brought next generation to my living room few months earlier before the release of the new consoles with TLOU, that was my impression as I was playing this game.

I hope that if there isn't a big leap, that the development costs will go down greatly.

Can you be more specific. what kind of innovation do you want? Virtual reality, hologram gameplay? I mean what more could they possibly do,that they haven't done already?

Yeah this would be my only complaint towards next gen.

I think this is where MS missed an opportunity with Kinect. So far they haven't chosen to focus on Kinect at all...and from what I've seen Kinect 2.0 is amazing.

Sony in this regard has boxed themselves in...they not bundling the camera, move or any new device what so ever. Its literally an upgraded ps3.

I feel like at this point all 3 manufacturers have failed to excite the broader audience and do what the Wii did.

Besides hardware innovation though the software has also been similarly lacking in innovation. At e3 i was really expecting a lot of new experiences to be shown off...but instead we just got a whole lot of open world and online games :/. I can understand why this has happened...as last gen Sony in particular went with all new IP's. That investment and risk hurt them quite badly. I don't think they wanted to repeat the mistake.

Well i think hardware innovation was out...due to costs.

So they really needed to focus on the software side of things. Most of the games shown off at E3 look great...but when you look closer quite a few of them are just reskinned PS3/Xbox 360 games.

Is this the extent of the greatest developers in the industry creativity? Because then we are fucked.
