Is there an established preferred position? (horizontal or vertical)  Pro's and con's of each position?  

 

My thoughts are that it cools better when vertical but the air vents on the top (when standing vertical) not only help it to cool better but also allow more dust to settle in then when its horizontal.  When horizontal those same vents become the right end and the main intake vents are now the ones on the underside of the front.

 

anyone got some thoughts? or info on Sony's reccommendation?

If I had one, it'd be horizonal. As vertical blocks one of the vents, and may make it overheat.

Veritcal doesnt block any vents and actually gives the exhaust much better air flow. I am looking for thoughts from people who have a clue or at least have a PS3!!! There are NO vents on the bottom when you stand it vertical. Way to prove your worth MeisterJ!!

I use horizontal because it fits into my entertainment center.

It doesn't really matter, one isn't worse then the other, just go with what looks better to you.

I've never heard anything about a ps3 overheating, the thing is at very least well designed in that regard, and I've used a horizontally placed in a little cupboard one for 9+ hours straight with no noticable heat.

No, I don't own a ps3. There is discussion of me purchasing that very same PS3 (60 gig model and Backwards compat is very important to me).

I used to do it standing up, but then there was an accident on tile floor so now I do it lying down.

Are you trying to say the PS3 is homosexual? PS orientation?

Anyway, enough laughs for me. . . I don't think you'd have to worry about heat because I believe the PS3 will notify you and turn off if it starts to get too hot. Personally, I prefer to keep mine horizontal, but that's just me.

 There's no need to be rude to someone trying to help you.

As for me, I keep mine horizontal because that's the only way it will fit in my entertainment center.  If I could I place my vertical as I like that better, but can't so oh well.

I really thought you were talking about something else when I read your first sentence.

Mine is currently vertical, but I don't think it matters as much as with the 360 (blocking a vent and all..)
