P2P is probably the worst thing when it comes to online gaming, bring on the dedicated servers (finally!) so we can get rid of that blight.

I can't entirely agree.  The problem with dedicated servers is that whatever game that is using them will eventually be shut down, after that point you will no longer be able to play multiplayer.  Also, 300,000 virtual servers isn't nearly enough to properly support all the regions that would need them for online multiplayer.  That's the good thing about P2P, multiplayer will always work, and there are plenty of host to choose from that are located locally.  When P2P is implemented properly it should work as good and in many instances better than dedicated servers.

All that said, I do hope that we will see a lot more games using dedicated servers because I think the pros mostly outweight the cons.

MS Azure cloud is already up and running well in countries scattered all across the world. they wont have to shut servers down because they have a flexible system that uses servers as needed. Its not dedicated as in 1 server in one location for 1 purpose. its dedicated in that its not P2P. their servers can be used for what ever, when ever. thats the benifit of having the second biggest and best cloud service as your backbone. it gives you all the options, and its all in place already, and its all used worldwide by business and government so it has good stablity and servers all over. Azure is a great cloud service, second only to Amazon cloud services.

I'm not trying to say that their cloud services aren't good, but no matter how powerful they are, they can't support dedicated servers for each game, and games will be phased out from dedicated server support, 300,000 virtual severs just won't cut it.  It will still be nice receiving more dedicated server support, but P2P isn't going anywhere, it is a very capable option when done right.

Good to see MS is still playing catch up to Sony in regards to features...

How's the in-game voice chat coming along?

Why would anyone in their right mind want to use a windows based OS for a server apart from corporate deals? Linux has always been the superior choice. Not to mention Gakai is already better than MS cloud...

"built the world's fastest and most widespread cloud gaming network." - gakai.com (they hold the record)

please show me how gaikai ranks against any other cloud service. I know gaikai is the "Guiness Best Game Cloud Service" but it is the second biggest after Amazon, and gaikai isn't on any chart besides guiness(which guineess isnt really great at this kind of stuff, from what I know) (which azure wouldn't compete in since its not gaming only). Please link to anything from any company that shows gaikai competes with other cloud services. I have never seen them mentioned in any business or tech article i read about cloud services. Just their guiness record. There is a reason cmpaines like Apple, and governments world wide use Azure.

LOL it's getting funnier by the minute.... well I'm done with this convo.... it's going nowhere....

It's been great on all games I've played on ps3... Did you mean to say xgame chat?  Then there are also achievements, but if either of those things were a major draw i would have gotten a 360

did you mean trophies? didnt the ps3 create that great feature

@thranx... I was adding to the xgame chat as a feature MS had that sony didn't... Also neither of those two things are a buying point for me personally in regards to a console. Don't get me wrong neat features (xgame chat especially), but not a real strong selling point IMO compared to Blu-ray player, built-in wifi, easily upgradeable HDD, wireless re-chargeable controllers, 8 player support, massive online games, reliable hardware...

I can group chat with my Vita while playing :D

Back on  topic...

How is it going to do this exactly. Say you're playing against someone with 100ms ping, is the server going to delay your response time to equalize it for everyone? Or is it going to boot the slow player. Or is it going to limit matchmaking by ping time, so you only play against local people on a local server.

Server hosting doesn't magically fix unfair advantages, only host advantage in games that allow that to be there in the first place. It's good against cheating anyway, although this sounds a but scary "really cutting edge things that empower the community to actually take a much more active role in that"

I think that will be up to the devs to define the different options or actions of matchmaking.... the servers just do what they are told....

so all of your example are possible if that's how they want it to be...

on your scary quote I think he refers to the rating scheme that has already been talked about I think here on that forum I'm not sure I remember seeing a video.... maybe Nsanity posted it.... it was around E3
