Shuhei Yoshida: PS4′s Stance on Used Games Decided “Early in the Process” of Designing The Console

There has been a lot of speculation on whether Sony changed its stance on used games for the PS4 after Microsoft revealed its own, or if it was a decision set in stone from the beginning, and according to SCE Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida the latter option is the correct one, as he stated as part of an interview published on the Official European PlayStation forums.

Of course I’m quite sure that this won’t be nearly enough to put the rumors to rest, but the man has said his piece, and the decision to believe him or not is yours. Personally I do, but I’ve always been an optimist by nature.

One thing is for sure: whether the decision was taken early or late, it was a masterful stroke that painted the the console in a very positive light compared to the competition, and even if Microsoft has since changed its own stance, first impressions are hard to cancel.

I believe him.

(then again, I believe everything this man says)

Shu and his master plan

It's good to know but it doesn't matter anymore. We can get used games on any next gen format now without any restrictions

PS3, Vita, 3DS and Wii U.

PS4 eventually.

I am glad that they plan ahead. Makes me feel all warm in side. Sony products are just always so expensive for me. I did not buy a PS2 until it was 99 dollars. I like their products a lot though.

Bananaking was right, I was wrong. Like he always is. About the 3DS not selling at least 19.999 million in 2013...

Well its definitely easy to say such a thing now... The fact that they didn't specify before does make it suspicious, but then again there wasn't anything to specify as they weren't making any changes. Also Jack Tretton said that that he was against the idea over a year ago to the press so I wasn't surprised.

SONY in the Begining: "Ristrictions on used games will be up to the publisher."
PS Fans: "So exactly as it is on PS3 now? Cool."
Other Console fans: "No. It means they can implement the same level of DRM as Xbone. SONY's just setting up a scapegoat for themselves."

SONY later on: "Ristrictions on used games will be up to the publisher."
PS Fans: "It really seems like it's just the same system as the PS3 in which publishers can use a method like online passes."
Other Console fans: "No. Expect DRM similar to what MS is doing system wide but by every single publisher. Microsoft is forcing it and SONY is allowing it."

SONY at E3: "It's exactly the same as it is on PS3."
PS Fans: "Fuck yea."
Other console fans: "... "

Would you buy a PS3 at 149? Or must it go down to 99 first, which will likely happen in 2016 or so on BF.

Actually, the last part...other console fans still said it was the same as xbone, or questioned whether DRM was actually that bad (calling others babies), or said DRM is the future, or said "sony just waited til the last minute to say something. Xbox backlash changed their minds".

I think there was even a thread asserting that Sony had TWO different e3 presentations, one was if xb1 confirmed drm and one if they didn't. How hilarious is that?
