Forums - Gaming Discussion - Prediction: XBox 1 will win the generation (consoles)

No chance.

360 can't outsell PS3... now PS4 have all the advantages that PS3 didn't have.

+ PS4 will be launched early this time
+ PS4 is cheaper
+ PS4 is easy do develop
+ PS4 have brand name

So... no.

"The only way a Pokemon will sell the Wii U in a meaningful way, will be if Nintendo finally push out a proper Pokemon game for the console "

If that was announced at e3 I might be eyeing a Wii U right now rather than waiting for the PS4

I will permaban myself if the game releases in 2014.

in reference to KH3 release date

Google searches or not, Xbox is still a weaker brand than Playstation. We've seen that in the current gen, with the sales rate for the 360 being much lower than that of the PS3. The XO isn't really positioned to improve market share, either, as it won't likely be very popular in emerging markets, a segment where Sony has done well.

As for the "most powerful console never wins" mantra, that's kind of meaningless. No one is looking at options and going, "hm, this one is more powerful, I think I'll pass." Other factors, such as price, are much more significant. Besides, with a sample size of only a few generations, drawing a conclusion from that is kind of a reach.

I think the XO will finish a close second or a close third. I also think Microsoft is potentially fine with that, as they're far more interested in "winning" North America than in the rest of the world. They want to integrate the XO into high-tech homes, where it can pull an Apple and coattail in other Microsoft products and services. They're looking squarely at households with disposable income, not at people scraping up change to buy a new game. I don't even mean this as an insult but Microsoft is not about gamers, they're about people who are willing and able to spend money on technology and entertainment.

How will they manage that without winning Japan, Europe or "rest of the world"?

North America is important, but the type of domination you'd have to achieve to off set all the other regions does not seem possible to me.

World wide I would be stunned to see either Microsoft or Nintendo end up outselling Sony in the next generation. I do find the battle for second place very interesting and could go either way as of right now.

Who said they can't take Europe?

I'm sure no one expected Nintendo to...

They lost by 7 million to PS3 in Europe last go around despite being less expensive and earlier.  They will be 100 Euros more this time in a recession economy.  I will be amazed if Microsoft mange to cut into that 7 million, much less completely erase it.

I do not see any console doing a Wii in 8th generation, especially the most expensive one.

The XB360 had a lack of exclusive support IMO. If XB1 can fix this issue as well as get more 3rd party support, that would help. Plus, Kinect has a lot of potential. I could be wrong though.

As for Wii U? I don't think the whole GC thing is a valid reason as to why Wii U won't sell well. It'd be like saying Wii U will do very well because the Wii did. Each generation is different and doesn't directly effect the next IMO. This logic also doesn't work for 2 reasons:

1) Nintendo has grown as a company since then. They have much more money and their series are much bigger than before.

2) (main reason) The PS2 was the easy choice back in 2001. Sony had nearly every single 3rd party game all to itself. The fact that it doubled as a DVD player was also a very big factor for the GP. The core fans obviously had its sides but the GP picking PS2 was just about the easiest gaming desision someone could make.

Exclusives don't get much bigger than Halo, and it doesn't seem terribly realistic to expect MS to ever top themselves there. I suppose they could really start to diversify their offerings beyond shooters and casual shovelware and make something for everyone, but that would be a departure from their track record, so we shouldn't expect it.

As for the Wii U, I'm not saying it won't end up selling well. Just that Gamecube had the same strengths, and it still got clobbered. And not only by the PS2. The (pretty awful, IMO) Xbox outsold it.

question for the OP:

People throw around the idea that the most powerful console never wins quite a bit, I'd be curious to know if the most expensive console has ever won.

I believe consoles tied for most expensive have won but never the absolutely most expensive one.

"ps4", as of may 30 is getting 2.5m hits per month compared to combine "xbox one" and "xbox 720" of 1.7m. That doesn't include the search term "playstation 4" either.
Xbox One is gettin 200k per month and xbox 720 is getting 1.5m. That doesn't actually support your point. Most of the people don't even know its name.

Prediction Xbox One lost the generation before it even began.

Nope, not gonna happen.  With literally everything going for them this time out, they still couldnt beat the PS3 and the clusterfuck of problems.

Right.

In all seriousness, I think the order will be PS4 >> Xbox One > Wii U

PS4 > 100 Million
Xbox One ~50 Million
Wii U ~ 40 Million

PS4= 125 Milliion

Xbox One= 60 Million

Wii U= 40 Million

They will definitely win the NA and UK even if some are dreaming Sony is going to beat Microsoft in America.
I also think they will win over the WiiU... But to be the top console worldwide, while they have chances too, I would not a call it a win already but their offering is definitely better than Sony and they are also going to gain access a large market (and this is what matters in a long term plan...).
