Forums - Nintendo Discussion - EA Sports Says They Would Develop For Wii U If The User Base Was There

EA Sports boss Andrew Wilson has reiterated the company’s stance on Wii U. Wilson says that the team develops games for platforms with a substantial user base and the Wii U just doesn’t have that at the moment. Wilson then said that they have brought sports games to the platform, but they haven’t sold as many units as the company envisioned. He concluded by saying that if a sizeable gamer base is on the platform in the future, then they will bring their vast array of sports related titles to the Wii U.

“I build for a userbase. I made games on Facebook because I thought people were there that wanted to play them. Then it became apparent to me that either I had the wrong game or they weren’t there. We had a strong offering on Wii U at launch. The platform hasn’t had the take-up. Our games hasn’t had the take-up we’d have liked. So at this moment we are not focused there. Now they could do a range of things that might change that situation, and we’d never count them out. And should there be a sizeable gamer base

That begs the question, why support the X1 and the PS4 with an install base of 0? Wouldn't it make more sense to wait for those install bases to grow? I guess this is where Sony and MS money come in

No, EA is doing that service for free. During the Genesis days, Sega didn't have to pay EA to put inferior versions on the SNES either.

Legend11 correctly predicted that GTA IV (360+PS3) would outsell SSBB. I was wrong.

EA supported the Wii U at launch, so it's only fair that they do the same with X1 and PS4.

Granted, beyond Need For Speed: Late Port U, EA's Wii U launch support has been rather laughable.

Sigh. No EA, you did not have a strong line-up at launch :/

Yes, they always did. Anyone who tries to tell you otherwise is either clueless about history, an idiot or a troll.

This is what they said from the beginning it is not a "viable," platform. This is not new.

Nintendo hasn't played well with third parties for a long time.

  • Gen 3: 9/10 top selling NES games were published by Nintendo, 15 out of top 20 published by Nintendo
  • Gen 4: 8/10 top selling SNES games were published by Nintendo, but 13/20 were published by Nintendo.
  • Gen 5: 20/20 top selling N64 games were published by Nintendo
  • Gen 6: 9/10 GameCube games, and 16 out of top 20, published by Nintendo
  • Gen 7: 9/10 Wii games, and 15 out of top 20 published by Nintendo.

By contrast:

  • Gen 3: 8/10 top selling Master System games published by Sega, and 14 out of top 20.
  • Gen 4: 13/20 top selling Genesis games published by Sega
  • Gen 5: 8/20 top selling Playstation games published by Sony
  • Gen 6: 4/20 top selling PS2 games published by Sony, 7/20 Xbox games by Microsoft
  • Gen 7: 1/10 top PS3 games and 5 out of top 20 published by Sony, 4/10 360 games, 10 out of top 20 published by Microsoft

Nintendo had an opportunity during Gen 4 with games like Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy and Street Fighter selling in the top 20.  The industry moved towards more 3rd party games during this time. But Sony took those relationships in Gen 5 and nurtured them. While Sony went with CDs, Nintendo stuck with expensive cartridges that cost developers 10 times as much.  Cartridges also couldn't story as much data as CDs. Finally, the N64 was difficult to program for.  Nintendo never really recovered the 3rd party support they lost.  While Microsoft was able to build some of the same relationships as Sony, Nintendo just hasn't done it.

Prediction (made in 2010) - The PS3 will eventually pass the Wii in lifetime sales.

Prediction (made in 2010) - The Wii will not come close to the PS2 in lifetime sales

All this shows me is that if Sony and Microsoft had the same third party problem that Nintendo did, they would go down the toilet as their first party titles are no match for Nintendo's.
