Forums - Gaming Discussion - Has A Game Ever Grown On You, Or Won You Over The Second Time Around?

While I was sitting, thinking about what to start playing next, I was struck by how often I've been forced to change my initial assessment of a game. Whether I'd jumped the gun and simply written it off early, or I simply "didn't get it" when I played it the first time, there have been times where I've gone back to it and found that I'd been completely and totally wrong. Not always, but enough for me to shun simply giving up on a game the way I used to.

For me, the big "Ah-Ha" moment was The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. I hated the game the first time I tried to play it. I was still in my early teens, and the complexity and oppressive atmosphere put me off so much I gave up almost immediately, before I even finished the first dungeon. It wasn't until I came back to it, years later, and gave it another chance. Now, it stands as one of my favorite games, and something I consider a masterpiece.

There are others I could list; KOTOR2, Sonic Adventure, Starcraft, Minecraft, among others. All of them I disliked at first, but that either grew on me as I played or suddenly clicked when I gave them another chance.

What about you? Are there any games out there that you've changed your mind about?

no if i didnt like it the first time around why would i go for a second?

Banjo Kazooie. The first time I played it I found it frustating but after playing it again, I found it really fun and I really like the game

Metroid Prime. Frustrated the hell out of me as a kid, now I love it.

The Ninja Gaiden Sigma games. I thought the first game was cool for about 15 minutes before my ass got wrecked, then lost interest in the game. I showed it to my friend (who is a total completionist and is known to redo the same part in a game for several hours if necessary) and we ended up beating the first one in 2-3 days. Then we got the second one and beat it, and then beat both games on hard. I really enjoyed the games when I wasn't the only one getting my ass kicked. To anyone looking for an extremely challenging franchise, i highly recommend it. Just don't bother with the third one. It is one of the worst games of all time.

Changing tastes? It's not always the case that you appreciate certain things more when you're older, but I have a much finer taste for certian qualities in games than I did when I was twelve. Even games I've played recently can seem more fun if I consider them from a different point of view.

Pilotwings
Thought it was so stupid. Then I played it again a year later and was floored.

Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. First time I played it through I was completely focused on the main quest and found it boring and tedious. My friend told me to try again and just ignore the main quest and I fell in love.

Mass Effect. I had just rented it originally and thought it was just average. I stopped playing during the first vehicle level when I got stuck on a rock. Just a few months ago I decided to dive into the series again mainly because I've become a huge fan of scifi. I actually payed attention when people were talking and roleplayed a bit and had a lot more fun.

I've learned to appreciate WRGS in general a lot more than when I was younger.

For me, I would have to say Dragon Age: Origins. I played it when it first came out, and while I was able to finish it, I didn't really enjoy it as much as others did. When the second game came out, I kept an open mind and played it, despite not really liking the first game, and strangely, I really liked the sequel (which probably seems weird because the sequel got a lot of hate from fans of the first game).

I liked the sequel so much that I forced myself to replay DA:O, and eventually I was able to develop a better appreciation for it.

Mass Effect 1. The first time I played it I utterly hated it and then quit. I was at a friends house at the time. I bought the game for $20 years later and I was fairly happy with it, it wasn't perfect but it got me into the series. Glad I bought it because 1 and 2 were amazing.
