While I really enjoyed The Last of Us, now that I've thought about the ending for a while, I think that it is best as a single, self-contained game. The story isn't really about the infected, it's about Joel and Ellie, so I personally don't think that the game needs a sequel (I think the ambiguous ending is a great way to end TLOU's world). When I think of a good, new intellectual property, I think of a game with the potential to start a huge franchise, and that's not something I necessarily want to happen to TLOU.
With that said, my vote would probably go to either Mass Effect, Bioshock, or Dark Souls. Each have interesting worlds, with many possible stories to tell. I'm not saying that you couldn't tell another story in TLOU's world, but I just feel that the game is perfect as a single game.

No Dark Souls was a spiritual successor not a direct sequel
