A game of over 1TB?! Are you crazy? How much VRAM would a card need to use those massive textures? No, that won't happen anytime soon.

Besides, a game as ambitious would need to launch on consoles too (or have a crowfunding campaign as Star Citizen), and I doubt PS5/XboxWhatever will be able to handle such game.

By soon, I meant in 5 - 10 years.

You can get super high quality assets from photogrammetry pretty quickly.
I was going through a SteamVR environment yesterday, where some Valve employees had reconstructed a cemetery using photogrammetry.
Apparently, the scene took about 30 mins to shoot.
The resulting scene had about 12 - 16 (I cannot remember the exact number) 8k textures, and was made up of a few million polygons.
~450 photos were used to generate the mesh and textures.

You don't need to have the whole game into memory all at once.
Also, Virtual Texturing is pretty neat, go look it up.

Oh and about not having enough VRAM: AMD / Radeon has a 7000 USD workstation card with four SSDs strapped to it.
I could see a consumer variant of that tech come to market within a decade.
Maybe not a full terabyte on the consumer side, but something.

AMD / Radeon is partnered with Bethesda, so I could see them leveraging that partnership to bring a showcase game to market.
Doom (2016) with full res textures anyone?

I don't know if 10 years can be described as soon in the tech industry. I mean, ten years ago we had the ATI Radeon 3xxx series and Nvidia GeForce 8xxx series, with at best 1GB of GDDR3.

How big is that cementery (side note: that's f*cking creepy!) map? Because it may not be the best tech for a game the size of Elder Scrolls, The Witcher or GTA, for example.

Those AMD cards, are you talking about the SSG models? They look cool, but I think they were a bit useless for gaming. That said, I think the Vega architecture has something that alows it to use a mixed memory config. and Navi will have something new for memory, so maybe they'll go that route. 8GB of GDDR6 and 32 or 64GB of NAND memory as fast cache.

I hope AMD improves its relationships with developers/publishers and get more studios using their tech, but right now they should focus on fixing their hardware.

Destiny 2 Faction Rally tokens are being throttled in yet another baffling misstep
http://www.pcgamer.com/destiny-2-faction-rally-tokens-are-being-throttled-in-yet-another-baffling-misstep/
A new Destiny 2 Faction Rally got underway yesterday, and once again an unfathomable decision by Bungie has alienated and angered players. The problem this time is a throttle on faction tokens, the little markers of success that are earned by completing various in-game activities. Tokens are converted to engrams that decrypt into arms, armor, and cosmetics, and also determine the ultimate winner of the rally—whoever collects the most is the best—and Bungie has decided to put a very tight limit on the rate at which they can be earned.

The map is pretty small.
Starwars Battlefront and Battlefront 2, both use photogrammetry to achieve their visuals.
They use it to quickly create high quality assets, DICE fills in the gaps with traditional methods.

The Witcher. Elder Scrolls and GTA are exactly the kinds of games where photogrammetry would work wonders.
Why work hard to create an asset, when you can just take it from real life.
The world is your asset store.

You just get regular assets out of the process.

You can have the assets at any lower res if you want.
The assets can be compressed like any other asset.

Oh, I'm not talking about games like Stardew Valley or Starbound. I'm perfectly fine with the graphics of those games (and SV would be more like 16-bit rather than 8).

I'm mainly talking about those games that, with the excuse of using an 8-bit or retro style, are made by lazy people and have ugly graphics. I'd like to post an example, but I don't remember any now.

Really depends on the game for me.

I can happily smash Super Metroid in a couple of hours and enjoy the art style all through the game.
But give me something like Fez? It's a no from me.

I can happily play a retro-inspired game like Minecraft... But shoot me if it's something like Prison Architect.

Some games the retro-styled graphics fits in well, others it's just a tacky, lazy approach and it adds and does absolutely nothing to the game itself.

Ok, ok. It's just that games sizes are getting a bit out of control and, while better textures are always welcome, I don't want games sizes to skyrocket due to them.

Btw, your last sentence made me chuckle.

That's what I'm saying! There are some games that, with the excuse of being retro, use bad, pixelated graphics with no or almost no textures that just look awful.

Game sizes aren't exploding. They're naturally expanding. If it wasn't for that terrible Bluray we'd have 100-200GB as standard now. The game sizes aren't the problem, people expecting better games but are not willing to upgrade storage and internet are.
