The Windows Meltdown patch might have made my framerate issues in RL worse. I wish I could figure out what really is the cause of the issues in the first place. It's not that the CPU cannot handle 144fps, it's that I have short frame dips < 1s seemingly as soon as my CPU dares to do something other than RL in parallel.

I say CPU but it could really be anything. For example sometimes the game is extremely choppy at the first 10 seconds of a match and then smooths out, which points to a storage/memory issue but the game is running on a pretty fast SSD and there is plenty of fast RAM.

Everything points to things that interrupt the CPU or make it wait for too long since the drops also happen if I lock the game to 60fps. Everything is made worse when I start a browser, or even worse, watch a video on it. It could also be sync issues with multiple monitors of differing refresh rates but I kinda doubt that. The symptoms would have to be more regular for that.

At this point I need some debugger or analyzer that monitors the performance of all PC components and notifies me when there is a bottleneck somewhere that stops my CPU.

What CPU do you have; what are your system's specs?
Have you tested before and after the patch?
How long have you been suffering?
Does this happen with other games?
Have you tried Linux yet (I am not sure on the quality of the port)?

It sounds pretty annoying.
Personally: I use two systems and a KVM, I find that to be pretty effective.

That's actually not a terrible idea. To have one system exclusively for gaming and another for everything else. It seems like a fun project. Then I just have to tunnel the sound from the gaming system to the other one and bingo.

To answer your questions:

I got an i7 6850k and a GTX1080. CPU is not overclocked and I don't intend to do so.
All I know is that I had issues since I have this system and they seem to have worsened since the last Windows patch.
It is noticeable with other games as well. Depending how demanding they are more or less, but they get choppy if I start running other stuff in the background, especially streams/videos.
Haven't tried on Linux and don't really want to. Even if it worked better it defeats the purpose and comfort.

But damn, now I'm hyped to build myself a cute little internet and video machine.

Are you on Windows 10? I had some problems with frame rates across pretty much everything after a windows update mid last year and it was to do with the Game DVR in windows settings, Once I disabled that games ran so much better.

Yeah I did that already. The issue is not really performance or framerate in general. It's not like the framerate is lower than it should be. It's about random stutter that seems to be caused by the CPU being interrupted.

Obviously it's far too early to do anything with at the moment, but will be interesting to see how long before games become playable, perhaps even faster than the WiiU?

CEMU benefited from WiiU using the same tech as Wii, so the emulator was easier to do as a big chunk of the work was already done.

I don't think Switch will be emulated as fast as WiiU but, with the machine using regular Tegra chips, I doubt it will take long. Maybe 12-18 months?

The results of this experiment include A Raven Monologue and Banyu Lintar Angin, two beautifully illustrated games which are free on Steam.

You can finally play Battlefield 1943 on PC thanks to this mod
http://www.pcgamer.com/you-can-finally-play-battlefield-1943-on-pc-thanks-to-this-mod/
Battlefield 1943 was one that got away from PC gamers. The console-exclusive shooter released for Xbox 360 and PS3 in 2009 to strong reviews, and developer DICE was planning a PC port. When that was cancelled in 2011 it seemed like we'd never get a crack at it, but thanks to one modder's hard work you can now give it a shot.
The Battlefield 1943 mod for Battlefield 2 aims to recreate the original as closely as possible, with the same vehicles, weapons and maps. Each side—US or Japan—has only three classes, so you won't have to spend much time mastering their nuances. Its vehicle combat should be a lot of fun, especially if you were a fan of Battlefield 1942, which this game was basically a re-imagining of.

Sim Settlements is so good it should be an official part of the game, said Chris following the launch of kinggath's Fallout 4 settlers mod last year. It went on to win our Best Mod of 2017 and has since received an equally-impressive 'Rise of the Commonwealth' expansion. Now, IDEK's Logistics Station aims to "simplify [the] logistical concerns" of settlement maintenance, by creating an Industrial plot that automates supply lines and improves inter-settlement resource sharing.

With that out of the way, onto the news: Genital Jousting is leaving Steam Early Access and officially launching on Thursday, January 18, publisher Devolver Digital announced today.

Old-school shooter Dusk blasts into Early Access
http://www.pcgamer.com/old-school-shooter-dusk-blasts-into-early-access/
Dusk isn't shy about its inspirations, taking elements of Doom, Quake, Half-Life, Hexen, and Redneck Rampage and mashing them together into a bloody pulp. But as Norm discovered when he played an early version last year, it's more than just a retro throwback, with dense, elaborate level design and modern environmental storytelling. Now you can try it out for yourself, because it's just launched on Steam Early Access.

Battlefield 1's Operation Campaigns go free for everyone
http://www.pcgamer.com/battlefield-1-operation-campaigns-go-free-for-everyone/
Battlefield 1's Operations mode, Evan argued a year ago, is one of the best game modes in any FPS, combining the scale of Conquest's 64-player battles with the focus of Rush, where you only attack a small number of objectives at any one time. Operation Campaigns string these Operations together back-to-back, and until this week there were just two, one free and one that was available to Premium Pass holders. From now on they'll all be available for free, developer DICE said this week.

http://www.pcgamer.com/death-trash-is-a-post-apocalyptic-rpg-filled-with-profanity-gore-and-puke/
Death Trash promises to be a lot of things, most of them unpleasant. It's a post-apocalyptic, cyberpunk RPG filled with, in its own words, "large flesh beasts, grotesque, sexual references and trash-talking unlike anything seen before". Your character can even puke on demand, if you give them the right ability. But despite all that, it's the art that's really caught my eye.

Every so often I like to spend a weekend buried in an action platformer, trying my best to master its mechanics and climb the leaderboards. It barely ever works (I'm far too panicky in tense moments), but I have a blast. So I'm looking forward to seeing how Remnants of Naezith turns out when it launches next month. Its hook, literally, is that you use a grappling hook to swing yourself around its levels.
