I don't really want GOG to bend or break any of their rules, because when you start doing that there's no going back, and we don't need another store with the same problems of Steam.

Also, it's pretty obvious that no major publisher will join Origin or UPlay or Battle.net. They are competitors and making EA or Ubisoft earn more money from their products is the last thing they want to do. If they're on Steam is because they don't see Valve as competition anymore.

No, I don't mean bending the rules and simply opening the floodgates for asset flippers. I was on about them trying to bend their primary "DRM free" rule and trying to get some of those AAA games that are only on Steam, that the other clients willingly ignore.

I absolutely do not want any of the other clients supporting asset flipping devs.

The problem is that once you start bending your rules, specially the central one, it's very hard to go back because you've already betrayed your origins, so from that point, things can go anywhere.

The old-school shooter Dusk will launch on Steam Early Access in January
http://www.pcgamer.com/the-old-school-shooter-dusk-will-launch-on-steam-early-access-in-january/
We took the first episode of the retro-FPS Dusk for a test drive back in August and really liked what we saw: "An ode to and evolution of the greatest era of FPS level design," as we said in our preview. The original plan to give that episode to people who preordered the game, and then hook them up with the remaining two when Dusk was complete. But just ahead of Christmas, publisher New Blood Interactive announced that it will instead go through a more conventional Early Access process on Steam.

EA did the same thing with Origin and said "no" to providing me with a refund once.
Ombudsman not only ended up giving them a small fine, but they used my situation in the case they were building and I got my damn refund.

New Jurassic World Evolution in-engine trailer shows off dinosaurs, reveals Summer 2018 release date
http://www.dsogaming.com/news/new-jurassic-world-evolution-in-engine-trailer-shows-off-dinosaurs-reveals-summer-2018-release-date/
Frontier has released a new in-engine trailer for its upcoming park building game based on the Jurassic Park franchise, Jurassic World Evolution, showing off some of the dinosaurs that will be featured in it.

Please be good. Please be good. Please be good. And please don't be a Microtransaction wank fest, otherwise I will just play Operation Genesis instead...

Asset flippers need to die.

But, I would not want Gog.com to change it's DRM free rule. DRM sucks and they are fighting the good fight for the consumer.

I'm hoping Genesis will be good as well. All I want is a nice optimised Jurassic Park Planet coaster type experience.

The only reason I want GoG to slightly change the rule, is for them to be able to obtain the other AAA games that Steam is also selling on their store.

That is going to be really tough. I would love to see them selling high profile games with DRM in them but I can already see the massive outrage of GoG hardliners, completely ruining their reputation. And for what? I mean even if GoG had all of the high profile AAA games, what would motivate people to leave Steam for it when Steam has those as well and all of their achievements and friends and their backlog?

They've ran themselves in the corner with their DRM policy but it's not like they could succeed to a meaningful degree any other way. DRM free stuff is basically the main draw. What else can any store offer that Steam can't and is actually relevant to mainstream gamers?

Yeah that's what annoys me about them slightly. They've run themselves into a corner they can never come back from, but in doing so, they've denied themselves the ability to court other AAA games to their client based on that rule alone. The other clients have zero excuses as to why they cannot round those games to their stores (Blizzard seems to have the silent golden rule of only selling games they own).

I'd be motivated to use GoG more if they had all of Steam's features, especially with the friends list/wishlist and profile editing. I'd also be enticed if they had the games I grab from Steam on their store as well. If they also allowed for a complete library transfer, I'd be there in a heartbeat.

Operation Genesis is the old game, it's actually extremely solid, albeit starting to get dated now.
It's also a fairly rare game on the Original Xbox as well.

I get that, but... Once GOG relaxes it's rules... Then publishers will just turn it into a free for all.
Plus it will only make the consumers life more difficult having to sift through DRM-infested or DRM-free titles.

I would rather keep the DRM stuff on the Steams to be honest.

GoG only is that popular now because of its self inflicted policy. If not for that it would just be yet another place to buy games from.

A full library transfer is probably up to Steam's cooperation and I doubt they have any reason to do it. GoG would have to read out all keys and have a way to verify them for every game of an account. I'm not sure Steam's API will freely do that.

Pathologic 2 developers go in-depth on the game's combat and autopsy systems
http://www.pcgamer.com/pathologic-2-developers-show-off-combat-and-discuss-autopsy-system/
Pathologic 2 is one of the games I'm most looking forward to in 2018. It's the remake of creepy adventure game Pathologic, which came out in 2005 and is considered one of the major influences on the modern survival horror genre. The remake smashed its Kickstarter target earlier this year before releasing a suitably weird trailer, and now developer Ice-Pick Lodge has put out a gif-heavy progress update and gone in-depth on many of the game's systems, including combat and autopsies.

A leak on the PlayStation Store that was captured by the quick-fingered folks of Reddit has revealed—unofficially, of course—that the next Destiny 2 expansion, set to come out in March, will be called Gods of Mars. The expansion will feature new stories and missions set in Clovis Grove and Charlemagne's Vault, with themed weapons, armor, and gear, co-op activities, multiplayer arenas, and a new enemy faction, Charlemagne's Remnants.

CCP Games is hiring for a 'a new and highly ambitious MMORPG'
http://www.pcgamer.com/ccp-games-is-hiring-for-a-a-new-and-highly-ambitious-mmorpg/
It wasn't a great year for CCP Games, the studio behind the space-spreadsheet MMO EVE Online. In October the company ended development of its VR projects, laid off almost 100 people, and closed two of its four offices. But in spite of all that, job listings on the CCP site suggest that it's getting ready to dive into something new.

Diablo 3's 'Darkening of Tristram' anniversary event is coming back for 2018
http://www.pcgamer.com/diablo-3s-darkening-of-tristram-anniversary-event-is-coming-back-for-2018/
December 31, 2016, was the 20th anniversary of Blizzard's great action-RPG Diablo, and to celebrate it held a Darkening of Tristram event in January of this year that recreated the original game's dungeon in Diablo 3, complete with a pixelated graphics, stiffer animations, and other old-school visual elements. It was "beautifully done," as we said in our look at how Blizzard pulled it off—and it's coming back.

1996 point-and-click game Titanic: Adventure Out of Time sails onto GOG
http://www.pcgamer.com/1996-point-and-click-game-titanic-adventure-out-of-time-sails-onto-gog/
Point-and-click adventure game Titanic: Adventure Out of Time is a "very ambitious, clever step back in time that deserves its cult following , and a fair bit more besides"—so said Richard back in 2014. But at that time, there wasn't an easy way to get hold of it without shelling out for a physical copy. That's all changed, because the game has now surfaced on GOG, where it will cost you $5.39/£4.

Time to take a look at GOG and Steam offerings this weekend:

+GOG

+Steam

  • Not much to say about Steam because they're still celebrating its Winter Sale, so go check it out.

And that's all for this week. The news will come back next year, on Tuesday, but until then I wish you a happy and gaming weekend, and remember to save some time to celebrate the new year!
