Infinity: The Quest For Earth – New Beautiful Video Shows Updated Planetary Rings

I-Novae Studios has released a new video for Infinity: The Quest For Earth, showing its updated and improved planetary rings. While Infinity: The Quest For Earth keeps impressing us, we feel like this is too little, too late. Back in June, the team claimed that it would launch a Kickstarter campaign for the game. Well, it’s November and we’ve not heard anything yet about it. Not only that, but the game (and its engine) has been under development for many years and at this point we don’t know whether it would be best to have a simple tech demo to marvel the engine itself and its capabilities or a proper game. Enjoy! Continue reading

Da Doo Run Run: Fotonica On Steam With Splitscreen

By Alice O'Connor on November 7th, 2014 at 12:00 pm.

As much as I might wish, I do not improve at Fotonica. I’ve tried the first-person auto-runner many times in its various incarnations over the years, and never found the beautiful flow and elegance that I’ve seen in other people as I watch over their shoulder. It is tricky and it is pretty and it is now on Steam as what developers Santa Ragione call “the most complete release of Fotonica to date.” It’s got split-screen multiplayer now, for one thing.

Fight Not In Fields And Streets: Naval RTS Victory At Sea

By Alec Meer on November 7th, 2014 at 2:00 pm.

Company of Heroes aside, generally I prefer to have my World World II strategy filtered through The Flare Path. Better to admire from afar than shame myself by attempting to understand such things first-hand. Victory At Sea has proven surprisingly accessible, however, despite its concerning itself with enormous boats and Winston Churchill soundbytes. It’s by no means Assassin’s Creed Black Flag with 1940s Destroyers in the Pacific, but it’s at least as much about good times as painstakingly-recreated times.

Skaven Time: Warhammer’s XCOMish Mordheim Out Soon

By Alec Meer on November 7th, 2014 at 6:00 pm.

I always get Warhammer spin-off Mordheim confused with that Mike guy from Blizzard. C’mon, Meer, you can master this – it’s with a ‘d’ if it’s got ratmen, and with an ‘a’ if it’s infinitely wealthy.

Mordheim isn’t the biggest name in the Games Workshop back catalogue, but it’s definitely one that’s ripe with potential for exploring the edges of Warhammer’s dark fantasy world. Rather than standalone battles, it allows for a campaign of sorts, with persistent characters, upgrades and all that good stuff. It’s being loosely adapted into a somewhat XCOMy PC game, City of the Damned, which is laying its foundations on Steam Early Access later this month. We’ve finally got a look at the thing in action, too.

Blood Bowl Is Unbalanced And That’s Why It’s Good

By Jody Macgregor on November 7th, 2014 at 7:00 pm.

I recently spoke to Sylvain Sechi, project manager of Cyanide Studio’s forthcoming Blood Bowl 2, about their new adaptation of Games Workshop’s game of fantasy football. I had an ulterior motive, though. I didn’t just want to ask him about when the game is coming out and what the new team will be like. I wanted to selfishly hassle him about not including some of my favourite teams and also present my pet theory about the appeal of Blood Bowl: that what makes it fun is that it’s the most unbalanced strategy game ever made.

Some days you want to immerse yourself in a lush green environment and wander for hours. Some days you want to be a gigantic clunky evil robot with a massive gun containing unlimited ammo destroying things as part of a complete overreaction to a letter.

Today is a robot day so I have spent part of the morning ruining other people’s day by destroying them and their things in Evil Robot Of Doom Crushes Innocent Town Due To Parliamentary Disagreement. They are pixel people. I am a pixel monster.

Heroes of the Storm's new ranked mode detailed; influenced by Hearthstone

Comments2

Blizzard’s universe-colliding MOBA, Heroes of the Storm, is getting ready for the competitive crowd. The new Ranked Play is on its way, that will allow for players and teams of similar skill to compete against one another.

Draft mode will be at the centre, allowing both teams to pick heroes for their team that are effective at the random battleground chosen - which is made known before hand. There’ll also be no duplicate heroes in ranked play, unlike that of the current versus mode.

People who abandon games - known as “leavers” - will face appropriate retribution too. Instead of being directly punished, they’ll be paired up with other leavers to help them “play the game the way they want to play”. However, if they decide they’d rather get back to the normal pool of matchmaking, they can work their way out by not leaving games consecutively.

Blizzard on Overwatch and Team Fortress 2 comparisons: "They're an enormous compliment"

Comment

Blizzard’s new game is Overwatch: a six versus six objective multiplayer FPS, and their first new IP in over 17 years. The game looks great - it’s already starting to grow on our Rob - but that didn’t stop the comparisons to one particular game: Team Fortress 2.

Blizzard are confident that there’s enough difference between the two; so much so that Overwatch will have it’s own niche in the market.

“[Team Fortress 2] is one of my favourite games of all time” said Overwatch's game director, Jeff Kaplan. “But we’re going in a different design direction than they are.”

Decoding Overwatch: Blizzard’s best new game since World of Warcraft

Comment

There was a moment, in the press conference immediately following Blizzard’s unveil of Overwatch, when Chris Metzen, Blizzard’s most public and high-profile exec, looked near close to tears. Overwatch is clearly a big deal for the company. Not just because of what the game is: a very fast paced first-person shooter. But also what it represents: a chance to salvage something good from the wreckage of their cancelled MMO, Titan.

How Starcraft 2: Legacy of the Void makes your Protoss fantasies come true

Comment

According to the Blizzard developers working on it, the Legacy of the Void campaign is about one thing: Protoss fantasy. It’s a campaign made for people who take internet quizzes like “Who is your Protoss crush?” and “Are you High Templar, Dark Templar, or Tal’Darim?”

But even if you think the Protoss are a bunch of mouthless space know-it-alls, Legacy of the Void looks like it’s going to offer one of the most interesting single-player campaigns in a trilogy that’s become known for space operatics and innovative mission and campaign design.

I don't know if this is good news or bad news. I guess it depends on what camp you are into (Nvidia/AMD) and if you are looking for more performance than what the 980/970 offer right now.

Nvidia Maxwell GM200 Titan II/GTX 980 Ti Slipping To 2016 – TSMC 16nm Volume Production Delays Stretch to Q3 2015

http://wccftech.com/tsmc-buys-14b-worth-equipment-16nm-volume-prediction-begins-q2q3-2015/

The article is too long to post, but basically says that instead of launching the big Maxwell chip (GM200) in 28nm Nvidia decided to make it on 16nm alongside revisions of the 980/970 chips in 2015, but given that the new 16nm production tech is late (again) and rumors say that Nvidia decided to skip 20nm altogether, they'll be forced to either go back to 28nm, take the risk to go 16 and have poor yields or wait until the process is mature enough to produce the new cards (in 2016).

By the way, AMD seems not affected by this because their plan was going 20nm in 2015 and 16nm in 2016, so there's no delay for them.

Please excuse my bad English.

Steam update for GTA: San Andreas renders old saves useless, removes songs and resolution options

Comments10

Steam’s version of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas has appeared to have undergone some major changes, and not all of them good. Old save files now no longer work; instead when loading it will just start a new game. While Xbox 360 controller support was added, players lost the ability to render in 1080p, and several other resolutions, which were working and available before the update.

Finally, it appears that 17 songs were removed from the game, most likely caused by expiring music licences.

What Blizzard won't change about WoW legendaries in Warlords of Draenor

Shadow Returns will get a third campaign despite Necropolis, job listing reveals

Comments2

You could say that 36,000 backers and the Shadowrun license allowed Harebrained Schemes the chance to build some creative muscle, before moving on to more ambitious things - namely the angular action-roguelike, Necropolis.

But that narrative belies the fact that the new Shadowrun games were doing wonderful stuff in their own right for the prosey RPG form, and were only getting better over time. So it’s a relief to know that there’s a future for the series beyond the standalone Shadowrun: Dragonfall released on Steam in September.

Far Cry 4 isn't getting a Blood Dragon spin-off, but don't count out another surprise expansion

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon was a whole lot of stupid fun, a game where - just in the first 30 minutes - you punch a nuke, unleash dragons on enemies and stab, shot and fling shurikens at Daft Punk lookalikes. Ubisoft Montreal won’t be making a sequel.

Unfortunate, sure, but the reasons behind the decision make sense and are extremely unexpected for Ubisoft.

Assassin’s Creed: Unity – GeometryWorks DirectX 11 Advanced Tessellation Coming Via Upcoming PC Update

Assassin’s Creed: Unity has just been released and NVIDIA revealed that a new update will add GeometryWorks DirectX 11 Advanced Tessellation to its PC version. According to the green team, this new advanced tessellation technique enables developers to ‘quickly and easily generate tessellation displacement maps from pre-existing assets, and to efficiently integrate tessellation rendering into their engines with minimal work.’

“In Unity, GeometryWorks is being used to add tessellation to roof shingles, roof tiles, cobblestones, brick roads and paths, archways, statues, architecture, and much, much more. And because this tessellation is real geometric detail, as opposed to simulated detail from bump mapping or normal mapping, tessellated detail in Unity is accurately shadowed by NVIDIA HBAO+ and NVIDIA PCSS, significantly improving image quality.”

Sounds cool, though we have to say that we’d wish to see tessellation being used as a means to eliminate LOD transitions – something from which AC: U suffers a lot.

There is no ETA yet for this update, but we’ll be sure to keep you posted.

Enjoy the following screenshot, showing this GeometryWorks DirectX 11 Advanced Tessellation technique in full effect.

So I’m sure that it’s perfectly fine for me to trust in the mob jumping up and down and giggling about Clannad, a Japanese visual novel I understand is of some repute, getting a crowdfunded official English translation and release. Lust For Light: Space Moth

By Adam Smith on November 10th, 2014 at 5:00 pm.

Moths are horrible things, especially the big, chunky ones. Bumbling about like swollen, dusty butterflies, they’re basically what would happen if a mummified penis grew wings and decided to come and live in your house just because you left the lamp on. Fortunately, Space Moth is crowded and colourful rather than nocturnal and moon-haunted. It’s a SHMUP of the bullet hell variety, although on the milder end of the scale. Well – the demo is at the milder end of the scale, but that’s just the first level. It’s good though, with a ‘soul draining’ ability that requires use of dual weapons for maximum points.

Retro-Pixel Castles Is A Roguelike Village Sim

By Graham Smith on November 10th, 2014 at 12:00 pm.

When I was but a boy, I used to draw little top-down worlds on paper and then systematically destroy them with imagined earthquakes and lots of eraser shavings. Now that I am a man, all hair and forgotten hope and sagging flesh, the nearest I get to those innocent joys is turtling up in strategy games and hoping the bigger boys – I mean, men – don’t attack. Perhaps Retro-Pixel Castles will serve me better. It has recently launched in Steam Early Access and it’s a “roguelike village sim”, with a top-down pixel engine smart enough to render shadows, particle effects and nostalgic feelings about my childhood.

Scaling The Heights: Dragon Early Access

By Adam Smith on November 10th, 2014 at 9:00 am.

Magic Carpet, but a dragon. That’s Dragon, an Early Access game that was the first thing to spring from my inbox this morning. It’s an open world monster simulator, in which you’ll be able to team up with scaly chums in multiplayer while propelling your bulk around the world, chomping villagers and scorching villages. The aim is to make a game in which you can do all the things a dragon tends to do, including lair construction, gold hoarding and terrorising the locals. There’s mention of late-game politics, with elder dragons imposing their might on the world politically and economically, but that’s a long way off. For now, you can fly and you can frazzle.
