^Another interesting question is, yes, the 980 is faster (at least 19% faster) than the 780, but almost on par with the 780Ti, so how will Nvidia market it?

They can't put it as the 780Ti successor as there's (at least in that benchmark) a negligible improvement in performance, right? But if they market it (and price it) as the 780 successor, they will find themselves with no market for the 780Ti or even the Titan Black among gamers.

I don't think they need a replacement for those cards at the moment. They are not that old yet and without a new manufacturing process getting a card that is a significant enough upgrade to spur people into upgrading would need an insanely massive die and would have nightmarishly low yeilds. They have the Titan Z for insane people anyway. This refresh will be more targeted at the mid to high market segment, the fact that Maxwell was lead with a lower mid part and is focused on effeciency is pretty telling IMO.

Those cards may not need a replacement, but if the new cards perform as well as them (again, at least on 3DMark), then what are they if not replacements?

And yes, Titan Z is for insane people. You can get two 295X2 and still get a lot of extra cash for the price of one of them.

Please excuse my bad English.

Well what's the alternative? Just not release any new GPUs until the die shrinks are ready some time next year? They have been iterating the same architecture on the same manufacturing proccess for well over 2 years at this point. And they have managed to push themselves into a corner by upping the anti with bigger more expensive dies. With the Titan being binned chips intended for server farms, and the 780/780 Ti also being based on the same die. To create a true successor to the 780 Ti/Titan class GPU that offers a significant enough performance leap without a die shrink they would need to make even bigger dies. Which is just not feisable I don't think.  So the marketing pitch is $650USD worth of performance at ~$500. The people that already have that level of performance weren't going to be buying new cards either way, they might as well tap into the market that wanted that performance but weren't willing to spring for the insane price tag.

Just to bring the discussion of the 980/970 to a halt until we get more, and real, numbers.

The results at videozardz are not from actual cards or anything like that but the supposed results according to their predictions of those cards.

http://www.tomshardware.com/news/gtx-980-videocardz.com-nvidia,27621.html

So I think that until we can get real numbers, debating what cards will this replace or not is pretty much pointess, don't you think?

Watch StarCraft II pros name the game's most overrated players

Comments2

Before last year’s WCS, our Rob called on StarCraft II devs Blizzard to move beyond the “bloodless intellectual exercise” they’d created and foster some big pro personalities.

Changes made ahead of this year’s competitive season have already made the 2014 WCS more enjoyable to watch - and now Blizzard’s video squad are working to bring out some of the sport’s large characters. By, er, causing beef. Yup.

Team Fortress 2's first community-made merchandise goes on sale

Less than a month ago, Valve dissolved the boundaries of the Team Fortress 2 Workshop. Formerly the preserve of intangible weapons and menswear for the discerning in-game avatar, the Workshop now hosts designs for physical merchandise - the best of which have already been cherry-picked for production by Valve’s partners in their new venture, WeLoveFine.

Battlefield Hardline is getting another beta before launch

Comment

We’re used to the beta as pre-order incentive - the forkfull of bolognaise stolen from the pan while it’s still cooking. So it was a surprise to us, and one suspects to Visceral Games, when the Battlefield Hardline beta turned out to be entirely necessary. A bit raw.

Hardline was delayed til 2015, and Visceral set to work incorporating ideas gleaned from their not-entirely-positive feedback. They’ve now penciled in another, hopefully triumphal beta closer to the game’s release.

John Romero: "Shooters have so many places to go, but people just copy the same thing"

Comments3

Who is your favourite Doom designer? I’m personally fond of the twisted spatial sense of a Tom Hall level, but John Romero has always enjoyed a considerably larger fan club. Even after Daikatana, and a decade spent alternating between handheld, social and bad games.

If you're a badge-wearing fan of his, you'll probably remember that John Romero is making a shooter. Given that he hasn’t made one of those in a while, perhaps you’d like to hear his opinion on their direction?

“There are unbelievable amounts of new stuff to do in that genre,” said Romero. “We’ve barely scratched the surface.”

Blackest Night: Lego Batman 3 gets day one DLC and a season pass

Comment

The Lego games are great. Fun, inclusive and accessible to kids and adults in equal measure. They are what family games should be. Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham should continue that tradition, but has unfortunately been infected with something dire - like the yellow impurity in the old Green Lantern rings.

Lego Batman 3 will launch with day one DLC and a season pass. Wonderful.

Microcraft: Microsoft might be trying to buy Mojang

Minecraft is a phenomenon. Your gran probably runs her own Minecraft server. It’s common knowledge that everyone who works at Mojang is actually made of gold - which means they can’t swim, but it’s a small price to pay. This means one thing: big companies want more than just a piece of it. Big companies like Microsoft.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Microsoft is in talks, serious talks, with Mojang over the acquisition of the Swedish company.

To that end a new “Melee Power, Ranged Power, Magical Resist Rating” attribute have been added to gear and Turbine have made adjustments to Physical Resist Rating”

DCS: MiG-21 trailer shows why pc flight simulators are king

Comment

I can’t help but marvel at DCS: MiG-21 and the Digital Combat Simulator series: there are few games that so readily embrace depth and complexity over making something immediately playable. For someone who grew up on the Ace Combat series, spending ten minutes getting my plane ready to take off seems alien to me but for wing nuts the prospect of fuel checks and brake line tests is what gets them up in the morning.

I imagine, too, that when you master getting such a complicated vehicle into the air, managing to bag a bogey is significantly more satisfying, too.

The DCS: MiG-21 launch trailer is enough to make me consider starting to learn.

Why one developer has stripped microtransactions from their MOBA

Comments1

Until now, indie studio Wyrmbyte have run Dragons and Titans much like the other MOBAs you know on Steam. Players aren’t charged for the privilege of fighting in its lanes - instead, they’re gently nudged with offers of new weapons, mounts and avatars at affordable prices.

But Wyrmbyte are about to move in the opposite direction to the games industry at large - they’re going to shift from microtransactions to a flat $20 fee.

“Is this the greatest idea ever or the worst idea ever?,” laughs Wyrmbyte president, Scott Brown. “It’s a little bit scary. But it’s what all of us as players wanted, and so I can’t believe that we feel that differently than other people.”

From myth to reality: Endless Legend launches on September 18th

Comment

I sacrificed a lot of animals - and by animals I do mean adorable babies - in an effort to bribe the powers that be into providing us with more fantasy 4X games. It all worked out, of course. This year saw the excellent Warlock II and Age of Wonders III swallow up countless hours of my life. And now we’ve got Endless Legend on the horizon.

Rob took a look at Endless Legend at GDC a while back and ended up being rather impressed with how Amplitude combined the pace and presentation of Endless Space with new, imaginative ideas. It’s been doing a stint in Early Access, but is on its way out the door. You’ll be able to get your hands on it on September 18th.

Riot has introduced a new featured game mode for League of Legends: Ascension. And it’s all about getting unlimited power - which is lovely.

Ascension sees two teams of five pitted against each other, both attempting to defeat the Ancient Ascendant Xerath and steal his big ol’ buff. That power makes a champion vastly more powerful, though not so much that the opposing team can’t take him down with a coordinated assault.

Smite's angry deities will soon be fighting with purpose

Comment

MOBAs tend to be pretty light when it comes to the narrative - perhaps appropriately. Sure, League of Legends has oodles of lore behind the scenes, Infinite Crisis draws on decades of comics and Smite has thousands of years of mythology to play with, but this rarely comes to the forefront of the games themselves.

In the case of Smite, that might all be about to change.

Wayward Tide: Starbound developer Chucklefish's next game is a co-op swashbuckler

Comment

Starbound is great. I have described it, in groups of serious adults, as “dead brilliant,” like I was an excited child. Do people even say “dead brilliant” anymore? Well I do. But very rarely. That’s why it’s in our list of the 15 best sandbox games on PC. But developer Chucklefish isn’t resting on its laurels, no.

Four members of the studio are now at working making a co-operative, somewhat competitive pirate action adventure game: Wayward Tide. Swashbuckling adventures are dead brilliant.

Atari looks to reboot more classic games in the future

Andy Chalk at 10:57 on 11 September 2014

Atari announced last month that it is "rebooting" Alone in the Dark and Haunted House. Both games are very old—Haunted House came out in 1982, while Alone in the Dark is from '92—and so obviously a good bit of work is going to be required to make them relevant to modern gamers. Even so, it sounds like other games in Atari's extensive catalog will be given similar overhauls in the future.

Mechwarrior Online rights returned to Piranha Games, "more efficient development" promised

Andy Chalk at 09:16 on 11 September 2014

Mechwarrior Online scored a very respectable score of 83 in our October 2013 review, but it obviously hasn't been entirely sunshine and lollipops since then. Fans have complained loud and long about missing features, delays and a glacial pace of development that has left major aspects of the game in an incomplete state. But Piranha Games President Russ Bullock recently announced that publisher Infinite Games is no longer involved with the project, which he said has already increased the pace of the game's development.

Guild Wars 2's September Feature Pack now live, draws criticism from community

More specifically, it contains a selection of updates designed to overhaul everything from trading to achievements, and from levelling to class balance. But already, some of these changes are drawing derision from the game's community.
