Pinball Wizards And Warriors: Rollers Of The Realm

By Adam Smith on August 4th, 2014 at 10:00 am.

I spent most of the weekend lying in bed with a maelstrom in my innards, feeling sorry for myself and occasionally checking the news on a laptop, which made me feel sorry for everyone else in the world instead. To bring the misery back home, I’d occasionally rewatch the trailer for Rollers Of The Realm, a fantasy RPG in the guise of a pinball game. It’s like a modern Devil’s Crush, a more fleshed out Epic Quest (Zen Pinball 2) or a less demanding take on Odama’s battleballs. The reason Rollers brought about bouts of despair is that I thought it was a Playstation exclusive. Clearly I was too weary to spy the Steam logo in the corner of the screen, which leapt out at me this morning. Trailer below.

Freeware Garden: Ghost Wheel?

By Konstantinos Dimopoulos on August 4th, 2014 at 11:00 am.

Freeware Garden searches the corners of the internet to highlight one free game every day.

Ghost Wheel? is not an oddly named game, but it is an odd theme for a game jam. The result is a downloadable, freeware bundle sporting nine games, each starring ghosts and wheels in different formations.

Walk below to find out what they are called (and what they are all about).

The Placing Of Products: Middle Earth – Shadows Of Mordor

By Adam Smith on August 4th, 2014 at 12:00 pm.

While watching the latest trailer for Middle Earth: God of War-dor, I realised that I’d started to think of the Lord of the Rings references as a sort of product placement. There’s a splatter of blood, a decapitation, a roaring of monsters, and then the narrator mentions something about Sauron. It’s branded decapitation, y’see. In the latest video, a ranger uses ‘wraith’ powers to see into the minds of his enemies, seeking their weaknesses and fears. It seems like a perfect opportunity for more product placement, which is something I’d like to encourage in games as in films. The industry needs a new pair of shoes, after all.

First-Person Sporter: Game On For Epigenesis

By Alice O'Connor on August 4th, 2014 at 4:00 pm.

Most current sports were designed around what a couple of blokes could get up to in a field with a ball and, optionally, a few bits of wood. But what about futuresports, for the future when humanity is all glimmering cyberpeople frolicking amongst the stars and definitely not e.g. lost and desperate people fighting over scraps in a world we willingly tore apart? In the future we won’t think twice about building ballgame rules around things like gravity cannons and genetically-engineered plants.

That’s the stuff Epigenesis is dabbling in, a first-person futuresport which hit v1.0 and came out of Early Access on Friday. I bet Futuresports will do Early Access and everything too.

Video: Slowly Starving To Death In Eidolon

By John Walker on August 4th, 2014 at 5:00 pm.

The extremely pretty Eidolon is out now – an explore-them-up set in a future Washington that has been reclaimed by Nature. Unquestionably looking like Shelter meets Proteus, it plays differently to both, this game primarily a survival simulator. However, with no information at all, including that bit, I started playing and recorded my efforts. You can watch them below.

Get kraken: watch 23 minutes of the monster galumphing about Evolve

Comment

Much of the Evolve footage we’ve seen to date has stuck the camera - and the responsibility of selling the game - with the hunters. Presumably because they’re the known quantity: men with guns.

But it’s the other bit we need to see to understand. Forget the survival horror experience for a moment: this is what it’s like to play as the horror.

Bethesda have begun a streaming series named TwitchWorks - and each week they’re planning to play through a chapter of Wolfenstein before bed, so that we can be lulled off to sleep by the Swedish tenors on the MachineGames team.

The first chapter covers The New Order’s BioShocktastic tutorial level, and delves into top technical secrets, character development, and the establishment of Wolfenstein’s “larger than life” tone.

Thief 2 HD mod is due out later this week

Phil Savage at 02:41 on 06 August 2014

Thief Gold's HD mod is, along with the unofficial TFix patch, now a standard part of my elder Thief install. It's something of a no-brainer for the game's fans—offering a noticeably more detailed set of textures without warping the game's deliberate aesthetic. Hence my pleasure when, on a recent trawl through ModDB, I discovered that the team behind the mod are giving Thief 2 the same treatment. Even better, it's due out later this week, on August 8th.

Counter-Strike: GO launches Cologne 2014 Pick'Em Challenge ahead of ESL One

Phil Savage at 22:12 on 05 August 2014

Pro Counter-Strike players are, like their job suggests, really good at Counter-Strike. They are better at Counter-Strike than, say, you (even though I'm sure you are really good). Oort Online is a new Voxel-based MMORPG by former Lionhead and EA veterans

Shaun Prescott at 14:31 on 05 August 2014

The world may not be wanting for a new procedurally generated, Voxel-based open world game, but Oort Online looks very promising. In development at Guildford studio Wonderstruck Games, the crowdfunded title is the work of former Lionhead, EA and Hello Games talent. The MMORPG will be set across a variety of worlds, all of which exist in the same universe where players can "explore, fight, survive, build and craft".

The Talos Principle writer promises it won't be a "horrible edutainment borefest"

Andy Chalk at 09:41 on 05 August 2014

The Talos Principle's developer bills the game as a "philosophical first-person puzzle game," and it's being co-written, along with Penumbra writer Tom Jubert, by Jonas Kyratzes, the creator of The Infinite Ocean, "a sci-fi adventure about sentience, freedom and the search for truth." It sounds like a sure-fire recipe for an intellectually heavy journey of introspection and self-discovery, but Kyratzes says players won't have to wander down that garden path if they don't want to.

Defend your street (or anywhere else) in MapsTD

Phil Savage at 04:29 on 05 August 2014

In the last ten minutes, I have learnt that PC Gamer UK's hometown of Bath is able to easily repel an invading army. Okay, so there are a few caveats. Firstly, that army must walk single file across one of our city's winding roads. Secondly, we need access to huge, ranged turrets, capable of accurate and long-distance fire. Thirdly, this only works in MapsTD—a tower defence game that uses Google Maps to generate levels from any charted location across the world.

Nvidia Geforce 880 GTX expected to launch this September

While no formal announcement has been made, Nvidia have been sending out invites to the tech and gaming press asking them to attend a product briefing in San Francisco. A number of sites are reporting that this product will be Nvidia’s new graphics card the Geforce 880 GTX, possibly also the Geforce 870 GTX.

There’s a chance Nvidia might tease an announcement at Gamescom later this month but the full announcement and launch is likely to occur in September.

How Divinity: Original Sin put the magic back into spellcasting

Comments1

Mana has made magic boring. At some point in the recent history of RPGs, spells became something you spooned out of a generic pool over the course of a battle - powerful ranged attacks you fired off every 30 seconds instead of every three, but otherwise no different to bows and arrows.

Spellcasting deserves better - and it took Divinity: Original Sin to make clear what we’d lost. In Larian’s throwback masterpiece, magic is an ill-advised meeting of ego and academia - an exercise in experimentation as likely to blow your party to oblivion as win your battles.

Nosgoth, the vampire vs. humans multiplayer romp that’s loosely based on Legacy of Kain has been in closed beta for a while now. While it will be free-to-play, for the time being, you’ve needed to purchase a founders pack to get access.

Expendabros: Broforce and Expendables 3 join forces to fight Mel Gibson in free spin-off

Comment

With the third Expendables flick on it’s way out the door and into cinemas, the novelty is starting to wear thin. Or at least it was, until some ruddy great genius at Lionsgate decided, instead of licensing a terrible game, to approach Broforce developer Free Lives. The result: Expendabros, a free standalone game with 10 stages of explosions and guts.

Getting to fight Mel Gibson is a nice bonus.

Hunt killers and wear ten gallon hats in Westerado: Double Barreled

Comment

There aren’t a great number of Old West games on PC. There’s Gun and Desperados - both good - and, newer, Call of Juarez: Gunslinger, but it’s a setting with a dearth of games. But even if it was busier, I reckon Westerado would still stand out. A revenge tale, a hunt for a family’s killer - it’s an old story, but the game’s no cliche. I reviewed it in another time and place, when it was a flash game.

Now it’s poised to hit Steam later this year as Westerado: Double Barreled, expanded and polished.

Wing Commander III: Mark Hamill vs. Space Lions is free on Origin

Comments3

Origin might be loathed by a fair few people still, but its On the House program is just great. We’ve gotten Dead Space, Plants vs Zombies, Battlefield 3 and Peggle for free, and now it’s Wing Commander III’s turn

After he hung up his lightsaber, and between being Gotham’s Clown Prince of Crime, Mark Hamill was a Wing Commander, fightin’ the Kilrathi and being all pensive. The third game in the series that made Chris Roberts a big deal, long before Star Citizen, threw in FMV cutscenes - wonderful, grim and often a bit camp - and a new 3D engine. The engine and FMV haven’t aged spectacularly, but it’s still immensely playable.

XCOM: The Board Game is a cooperative war against aliens led by a possibly evil companion app

Comments2

The problem with video games - there is only one - is that you generally can’t swallow them or choke someone with them. That’s why board games exist, and thrive. If you’ve ever thought, while playing XCOM, that it would be even more satisfying if you put your hand into the screen, lift up your soldiers, and eat him, then you will be pleased to know that XCOM: The Board Game is a thing, and it is a thing with tiny pieces.

It’s also cooperative, so you can lead the XCOM Project with a bunch of your chums, each of you taking on the role of one of the department heads, from Commander down to Squad Leader. While it has the traditional trappings of a board game from dice to cards, it also uses a companion app to drive the action forward. You cannot swallow the companion app.

Blizzard previews Warlords of Draenor's Nagrand: home of the Warsong Outriders

I did love to fly around Nagrand in World of Warcraft’s first expansion, Burning Crusade. And still, when I’m levelling a new alt, I’ll often take them there. And it was nice to hang around in the Outlands, on occasion, and not feel like I was watching the end of days.

With Warlords of Draenor, we get to go back to Nagrand, back when it was home to the Warsong clan, led by Grommash Hellscream. Quite a bit of history there. What's next for TUG, the freshly Yogscast-backed survival RPG?

Comments1

TUG! It's only a faintly rude sounding name if you're British and puerile, but the open-world survival sandbox RPG is so much more than a local euphemism for masturbation. It's a procedurally generated, Minecraftian exploration and survival game with a deliciously Lionheadian art-style. Less geometrically blocky, more sprawling and natural, with seasons and pets and civilisations to discover.

The Kickstarted project popped into headlines following Yogscast's cancellation of their own player-funded Yogventures game. The YouTubing superpower deigned to placate their empty-handed backers by offering them a copy of TUG, citing it as "in many ways" the survival adventure game they'd always wanted to make with Yogventures.

Activision have noticed a "downturn" in pre-orders - and Call of Duty is "not immune"

Games publishers would just love it if we’d pre-order some of their games. They’ve made that abundantly clear in the last few years, with a trend toward rewarding people who buy a game before they know it’s any good.

The Art of Free to Play: Viktor Antonov on designing Battlecry's beautiful world

Comments1

We're told game design has to be unsentimental and iterative. But Viktor Antonov, creative director on Bethesda’s Battlecry and the celebrated artist of behind Half-Life 2's City 17 and Dishonored's Dunwall, disagrees.

“I come from a less experimental philosophy and a commitment to a strong concept,” he said. “If you’re called by a client as an architect and you make a building, you won’t experiment and destroy buildings before it’ll function.

“Battlecry was a one-shot concept. It was very precise and it’s gone into production exactly as it was planned.”

The decline of pre-orders is good for everyone

Comments1

Today we are like Heracles, lovely readers. Because we’ve cut off - or at least very badly scratched - one of the hideous heads of the monstrous Hydra. Activision recently told investors that there’s been an industry-wide dip in pre-orders, and this is an excellent thing.

It’s proof that we’re finally starting to realise that pre-orders are completely pointless in the modern industry, and that we’re not so easily manipulated by ham-fisted incentives and ridiculous store-specific tat. The illusion of limited stock has been broken, and absent its source of power, pre-orders are going the way of all monsters: left in the past.

The Settlers: Kingdoms of Anteria is half city builder, half...co-op action RPG?

Tom Sykes at 03:49 on 07 August 2014

Ah, so this is what Ubisoft meant when they said they were reinventing The Settlers series with Kingdoms of Anteria. They meant "it's kind of an action RPG now", but also "it's still a city building strategy game", and "not to get picky, but we prefer the term 'Action RTS'". While I try to unpack what 'Action RTS' means, here are some unSettling facts: Anteria will feature "persistent city building", four-player co-op, loot and bosses, and those are certainly words you don't see together very often.

I will maintain until the day they pry the mouse from my cold, dead hand that Dark Messiah of Might and Magic is a criminally underrated game. So I was naturally intrigued by Hellraid, which by all appearances shares many similarities with Dark Messiah: Specifically, the bloody, fast-paced combat through expansive, RPG-style dungeons. But it's most definitely not, as this gameplay trailer makes clear, an RPG: Visual trappings notwithstanding, it's all about thefaux-medieval fantasy face-busting.

Someone on Reddit claims that the new DOTA2 mod tools is actually the Source 2

Everything in this package is a new game. It's all the Dota assets and code ported over to Source 2. That's why Hammer is different. That's why the console is different.

Guys. Valve just soft launched the entire Source 2 engine.

EDIT: Because people are asking for proof.

Everything that would share a name with Source is named '...2'. That's 'engine2.dll', 'vconsole2.exe', 'vphysics2.dll'.

When you go to open a map in Hammer, it asks for .vmap files. One of the other options is '.vmf (Source 1.0)' files.

The fucking console is redone.

There is a new Key-Value like format (that i'm gonna call KV2). It is type safe. It looks like this: http://pastebin.com/RVQtkv1j. EDIT: Looks like my name isn't going to stick. The engine calls them 'Schema Files', written by CSchemaTextWriter.

EDIT2 (Probably the strongest evidence): That script also allows for different dlls to load and render different assets (vmaps are rendered by worldrenderer.dll, etc). This is a completely new architecture from Valves previous system. This bit alone would indicate a significant amount of engine work has been done to split these bits out of the engine and into their own libraries. That means the engine is also completely plug-and-play with new engine level components if valve creates them for different games. This is pretty freaking huge.

EDIT3: lol, source2 apparently support fax machines.

EDIT4: from /u/nellody: https://developer.valvesoftware.com/w/images/3/35/Tileset_new_outliner.png notice the 'source2' in the path.

EDIT: the general consensus around the source reverse engineering community is that this is really source 2.

Xbox One launch title Ryse: Son of Rome announced for PC

Xbox One launch title Ryse: Son of Rome launches on PC later this year, developer Crytek has announced.

Crytek will self-publish the digital version of the gory action game. Publisher Deep Silver will distribute a boxed version.

The PC release supports 4K resolution and includes all Ryse DLC packs that have released since the game's launch on Xbox One in November 2013.

The DLC includes the Colosseum Pack, the Mars' Chosen Pack, the Duel of Fates Pack and the Morituri Pack. The PC version also grants instant access to the Ruins multiplayer map and the Legionnaire's Trust sword, which were initially bundled with the special edition of the game.

"4K gaming is another leap in graphics quality for PC gamers and Ryse is the perfect showcase for what's now possible in high-end PC games," Crytek business development chief Carl Jones said.

"We've given our team the opportunity to show what CryEngine can really achieve, without compromising quality, thanks to the incredible hardware available now to PC gamers. Ryse will be a benchmark PC graphics showcase this year and probably for a long time in future. Our community asked for a Ryse PC version, and we have the means and technology to deliver this title with the highest quality possible."

German company Crytek recently suffered financial problems but appears to have stabilised following the sale of the Homefront IP and Crytek UK to Deep Silver. Ryse on PC is one of four Crytek games in development, the others being Hunt, Arena of Fate and Warface.

A deal for Ryse 2 was in the works with publisher Microsoft, but it collapsed after Crytek refused to grant Microsoft the rights to the franchise.
