What's Humble Choice?

Humble Bundle has got killed the Humble Monthly deal and has replaced it with Humble Choice. If I'm not mistaken, it offers less games at the same or a bit higher price. Hopefully the quality of the games makes it worthy.

Well, only for new subscribers.

Since I already was a yearly subscriber (paid €99 for a year, so €8.25 per month), I get more games than ever, I can choose 10 games per month.

My favorites this month are Two Point Hospital (Theme Hospital was very funny back in the days), Whispers of a Machine (Sci-Fi point&click adventure) and Dirt Rally 2.0.

I just downloaded Dirt Rally 2.0 via GamePass a few days ago and was disappointed about the lack of a VR-mode. The Steam-version in the Humble Bundle supports VR!

I tried Theme Hospital when they did a free weekend at Steam. I found it fun and a bit challenging. I'll personally wait to see if they launch a complete edition with the several DLCs the game already has, and the ones that will come.

The lack of VR on GamePass is odd, but maybe that's because the game uses SteamVR.

New Top Steam Game: CS:GO player counts have officially overtaken Dota 2
https://www.pcgamer.com/new-top-steam-game-csgo-player-counts-have-officially-overtaken-dota-2/
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive has now reliably pushed past Dota 2’s peak and average player counts, making the shooter the more popular of Valve’s big online games and the top game on Steam. For December 2019, CS:GO posted peak users of 767,000 while Dota 2 reached nearly 628,000. Though CS:GO started to pull ahead of Dota 2 last year, CS:GO has now claimed the top spot for four months in a row—it’s not a fluke, but a trend, and we can officially pass the symbolic crown. Dota 2’s all-time player peak was 1.2 million in January 2015, with a return to that number in January and February 2016. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive’s all-time peak player count was 850,000 in March 2016. Both have been enduringly popular games with multiple famous eSports moments. CS:GO in particular has produced many amazing plays over the past decade.

Dota Underlords' peak player count has dropped by more than 90 percent
https://www.pcgamer.com/dota-underlords-peak-player-count-has-dropped-by-more-than-90-percent/
Dota Underlords, Valve's Early Access auto battler, has shed most of its players in the six months since it launched on Steam. In June, it peaked with more than 200,000 people playing concurrently, according to Steam Charts, but in the last day it's had fewer than 15,000.
Spotted by Reddit user SharkyIzrod, the average player number has dwindled to just over 11,000, with peak players below 20,000. When Underlords launched, auto battlers seemed like the thing to watch, but interest in the genre as a whole seems to have sunk considerably since.

Sundered: Eldritch Edition is going free on the Epic Games Store later this week
https://www.pcgamer.com/sundered-eldritch-edition-is-going-free-on-the-epic-games-store-later-this-week/
The Epic Games Store began giving away weekly free games in May to mark its first big sale, a process it extended in June to the end of 2019. It wrapped up the year in a big way, with 12 daily giveaways. Then 2020 rolled around, and we got three more free games.
And that's not the end of the ride either. Darksiders, Darksiders 2, and Steep are still free for now, but once January 9 arrives, Sundered: Eldritch Edition will take their place. Sundered is a hand-drawn Metroidvania developed by Jotun studio Thunder Lotus, in which players can either resist or embrace ancient Eldritch powers. That sort of thing rarely comes without a price, and, oh yes, here it is: "At the cost of your humanity."

NVIDIA has released a new major driver for its graphics cards. According to the release, the NVIDIA GeForce 441.87 WHQL driver, also known as CES 2020 driver, adds official support for Wolfenstein: Youngblood’s real-time ray tracing effects.
MachineGames will release the RTX patch for Wolfenstein: Youngblood later this week. The team will be using Ray Tracing in order to enhance the game’s reflections. Furthermore, the game will support DLSS. Once the patch is out, we’ll be sure to benchmark both RTX and DLSS.
The NVIDIA GeForce 441.87 WHQL driver also introduces Variable Rate Super Sampling. Variable Rate Super Sampling (VRSS) is a new technique to improve image quality in VR games which uses NVIDIA Variable Rate Shading (VRS) to dynamically apply up to 8x super sampling to the center of the VR display when GPU headroom is available.
Moreover, NVIDIA introduced a new Maximum Framerate Setting into the NVIDIA Control Panel. Use the maximum frame rate setting to set the max framerate a 3D application or game can render.
Last but not least, this driver comes with an improved Image Sharpening, as well as new Freestyle Filters.

https://www.dsogaming.com/news/this-mod-introduces-a-high-quality-3d-model-of-jill-valentine-to-resident-evil-2-remake/
Back in October 2019, we informed you about a mod that allowed you to play as Jill Valentine in Resident Evil 2 Remake. That mod was based on the Resident Evil Remake model of Jill and while it looked really cool, there is a new mod in town. WallStaringCat has created this new custom 3D model for Jill that you can download right now.
WallStaringCat has created Jill’s body, clothing, face, radio, holster, Samurai Edge Pistol, beret and hair. The modder used Maya, Zbrush, Substance Painter and 3DS Max in order to create this model.
Now as with all of the character swap mods, Jill’s rig, animations, eyes, eyelashes, eyebrows and mouth are from the base game’s Claire model.

This 3.5GB HD Texture Pack for Devil May Cry 3 upscales all of its textures, available for download
https://www.dsogaming.com/news/this-3-5gb-hd-texture-pack-for-devil-may-cry-3-upscales-all-of-its-textures-available-for-download/
Modder ‘pepodmc’ has released a must-have HD Texture Pack for Devil May Cry 3 HD Collection. The modder used AI techniques in order to improve and overhaul all of the game’s textures. This pack is 3.5GB in size and is available for download.
In some situations, the modder used entirely new textures using ones from Devil May Cry 4. Moreover, some rooms can look better than others, and sometimes the visual improvements are not that great. Still, the newly improved textures have less noise and are of a higher quality than those found in the vanilla version.
However, we should also note that there are some changes in terms of color saturation, fog layer and brightness in some scenes. For the most part, though, the modder has tried to stay true to the game’s aesthetics.

Take a look at what Diablo 2 Remaster could have looked like, fan tech demo coming soon
https://www.dsogaming.com/screenshot-news/take-a-look-at-what-diablo-2-remaster-could-look-like-fan-tech-demo-coming-soon/
Reddit’s member ‘zomprd‘ is currently working on an AI-enhanced HD Texture Pack for Diablo 2. The modder has so far extracted and upscaled the textures from the Rogue Encampment, and shared some screenshots. Thus, these screenshots will give you an idea of what a faithful Diablo 2 Remaster could have looked like.
The modder aims to also upscale some characters, monsters, items and other textures in the next few days. Then, he plans to create a web application – a prototype, a Diablo 2 demo – which uses these upscaled textures. Unfortunately though, and after releasing this demo, the modder does not plan to release a HD Texture Pack for the base game.

Oddity is an Earthbound spiritual successor that used to be a fan sequel
https://www.pcgamer.com/oddity-is-an-earthbound-spiritual-successor-that-used-to-be-a-fan-sequel/
The Mother series, known as EarthBound outside of Japan, stopped with Mother 3 in 2006, and only the second game was released internationally. That hasn't stopped fans from carrying a torch for it over the years, with one group deciding to stop waiting for Nintendo and create their own sequel, which has now transformed into a separate game with a new name, Oddity.

Soma studio Frictional Games may be teasing its next horrific thing
https://www.pcgamer.com/soma-studio-frictional-games-may-be-teasing-its-next-horrific-thing/
It's been a couple of years since Frictional Games, the studio that over the past decade has given us the Penumbra trilogy, Amnesia: The Dark Descent, and Soma, revealed that its next "horrific" game was in full production, yet we still know nothing about it. That may be about to change, however. Rock, Paper, Shotgun recently noticed that the Frictional website has been updated with a link to "Next Frictional Game," and more importantly the nextfrictionalgame.com website is doing something different now, too.

Take a picture, then walk into it, in this must-see game tech experiment
https://www.pcgamer.com/take-a-picture-then-walk-into-it-in-this-must-see-game-tech-experiment/
Indie Developer Matt Stark has tweeted a video of his idea for a game on twitter. It’s what he’s callling the “Polaroid Effect,” after the once-ubiquitous instant cameras. The experimental game mechanic allows a player to take a picture of a slice of environment using a camera, then place the instant-camera picture into the world as a piece of interactive environment—physically altering the world around them into a surrealist photo collage. He first posted the concept in November 2019, but was then unsure if what he has done now was even possible. “The effect is purely visual and the player can’t physically interact with it,” he said at the time. It’s clear now that Stark’s development has come pretty far. Stark hasn’t said what kind of game he’s interested in making with the concept, but with some 50k retweets and 150k likes on his concept the idea definitely shows promise.

Older Americans are playing more games, especially on PC and Mobile
https://www.pcgamer.com/older-americans-are-playing-more-games-especially-on-pc-and-mobile/
Americans ages 50+ are increasingly interested in and playing games, with a marked increase in the older gamer population. A study by the AARP reports that there were some 40.2 million older adult gamers in 216, while there are now 50.6 million. Over one-third of these gamers report themselves as constantly trying new games, and fewer of them are reporting looking to their children or grandchildren to find new games, preferring to instead find those games themselves. Nearly half of these gamers report playing games daily. A significant number—33%—report playing games online, and one-third of those generally play with strangers. These gamers almost all report playing generally puzzle, logic, word, card, and video board games.

Fantasy colony sim Odd Realm is quite charming and a bit weird
https://www.pcgamer.com/fantasy-colony-sim-odd-realm-is-quite-charming-and-a-bit-weird/
Odd Realm is an interesting gem in the rough that went into Early Access last January and has come a long way since. It’s a colony survival or simulator or manager or builder or whatever we’re calling these, the genre that sprung up from Dwarf Fortress. It’s also adorable, frankly—and it has a neat twist. Whereas most games in this genre stick you with a single species of weird thing to base your civilization on, Odd Realm has a bunch of species with their own unique game traits. You’ve got your garden variety Humans, yes, but also playable right now are a bunch of dead skeleton people who’re really good at magic. There are three more civilizations planned. Odd Realm is also rendered in pretty charming pixel art, with higher-res art for character and creature portraits.

Ecila is an action game available for free over on Itch.io. Ecila is a game where you collect some weird knives and they have different powers. Ecila has some pretty good pixel art. Ecila is made by developers faxdoc and NostalgiaTree. Ecila has a very satisfying dash mechanic which I like quite a lot. Ecila is playable with a keyboard + mouse or a controller. Ecila took me about an hour and a half to beat, but will be shorter for you if you are better at action games. Ecila is also “Alice” backward, so there’s that.

Biomass is a sidescrolling sci-fi game with a few elements borrowed from Dark Souls. Firstly, it's hard. Really hard! Enemies can defeat you in a couple of hits. Also, you drop your collected experience when you die. That aside, the game has a refreshingly different theme, as it's set in a gleaming future metropolis packed with robots, and human jerks wielding lightsaber-esque laser weapons.

In March 2019, Daedalic Entertainment unveiled The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, an action-adventure game set in JRR Tolkien's famed fantasy realm. Nothing was said about the game itself, though, except that it "tells Gollum's story from a perspective never seen before ... while staying true to the legendary books." But the latest issue of Edge reveals more about what's in store, including that the lead character will not look like he did in Peter Jackson's films.

SALES & DEALS

Chinese open world RPG becomes a Steam top seller, English coming soon
https://www.pcgamer.com/chinese-open-world-rpg-becomes-a-steam-top-seller-english-coming-soon/
It seems like every few months a Chinese indie game is rising to the top of Steam's top seller list despite only being available in Simplified Chinese. Games like Chinese Parents and Scroll of Taiwu achieved massive success last year, selling well over a million copies each. It's a good reminder that Steam's second largest demographic hails from China, but it's also a cool insight into a vibrant world of games that aren't available in English.
Sands of Salzaar (or 部落与弯刀, which translates more directly to Tribe and Machete) only released on January 2, but in that time has rocketed to into Steam's global top seller list with an estimated 50,000 sales in its first week. That number is expected to reach 200,000 by the end of January. Though it's only available in Simplified Chinese, Sands of Salzaar has amassed over 2,600 "mostly positive" reviews and is currently the 31st most-played game on Steam by concurrents, with peak concurrent players reaching 21,000—in the neighborhood of games like Stardew Valley and Skyrim.

SOFTWARE & DRIVERS

Chinese is now Steam's most popular language, according to its hardware survey
https://www.pcgamer.com/chinese-is-now-steams-most-popular-language-according-to-its-hardware-survey/
Simplified Chinese has become the largest language demographic on Steam, according to the results of Valve's December 2019 Steam Hardware and Software survey. Each month, this optional survey collects basic system configuration data on a portion of Steam's 90 million monthly active users ranging from what CPU they're using to how much free space players have on their hard drive. This survey also collects data on what language users have their Steam client set to, and, until now, English was the dominant choice, typically representing around 30 to 40 percent of users.
That has changed as Simplified Chinese language users rocketed up to the number one spot in December 2019. Simplified Chinese is now the language of choice for 37.8 percent of Steam users who participated in the survey, climbing a significant 14.4 percent in the last month's survey. As a result, English users shrank to 30.4 percent.

MODS/EMULATORS

New nude mod released for Monster Hunter World, featuring boobs physics
https://www.dsogaming.com/news/new-nude-mod-released-for-monster-hunter-world-featuring-boobs-physics/
Battlescars has released a brand new nude mod for Monster Hunter World, featuring bouncing boobs. From what I can remember, this is the first nude mod that features boobs physics, therefore some PC gamers may be interested in it.
Unfortunately, this mod is a bit “polygonal“. Moreover, it appears that this nude mod lacks some details. For instance, the nipples appear flat and unnatural. Still, there are bouncing boobs so that’s at least something.
>> I don't know if it's a mistake on their part or if they've changed their policy, but they've actually put the Nexus Mods link to the mod.

Resident Evil 2 Remake mod unlocks the animations of distant zombies from 30fps to variable or 60fps
https://www.dsogaming.com/news/this-mod-for-resident-evil-2-remake-unlocks-the-animations-of-distant-zombies-from-30fps-to-variable-or-60fps/
One of the most annoying issues of Resident Evil 2 Remake was the 30fps animations of all distant zombies. This is something that annoyed a lot of PC gamers. And even though Capcom has not addressed this mechanic, there is a mod that finally unlocks it.
The “Zombies at a distance less frequently” mod unlocks the animations of distant zombies. Right now, the mod offers two options. You can either lock the framerate to 60fps, or have a variable framerate.
>> This mod is at Nexus Mods too.

This mod for Skyrim Special Edition can unlock your in-game refresh rate from 60Hz to 300Hz
https://www.dsogaming.com/news/this-mod-for-skyrim-special-edition-can-unlock-your-in-game-refresh-rate-from-60hz-to-300hz/
Skyrim fans, here is another must-have mod for you. While the game supports uncapped framerates, it locks your refresh rate to 60Hz. Thankfully, though, SlavicPotato has released a mod that can unlock your in-game refresh rate from 60hz to 300hz.
The ability to use high refresh rates is crucial for those that want to enjoy the game with higher framerates. In case you weren’t aware of, a 60Hz game will feel like a 60fps game even when you’re having higher framerates. As such, this mod is a must-have for those with 120Hz or 144Hz monitors.
According to the modder, the plugin is passive. This basically means that after it performs the patch, it immediatelly unloads so there’s no additional overhead.
Last but not least, the modder also suggest using the HavokFix SKSE plugin. This plugin is said to be an easy all-in-one performance-optimized solution.
>> Not enough for those new 360Hz Nvidia monitors. Anyway, you can get this mod from Nexus Mods.

The Royal Mail is honouring classic British games via the medium of stamps
https://www.pcgamer.com/the-royal-mail-is-honouring-classic-british-games-via-the-medium-of-stamps/
Commemorative stamps are something of a British institution. Other countries do them, of course, but we bloody love them. It's the kind of twee distraction we live for. Past collections have included Star Wars, David Bowie, James Bond, and other cultural behemoths—so it's about time videogames got a shot, eh?

Tiny houses are coming to The Sims 4
https://www.pcgamer.com/tiny-houses-are-coming-to-the-sims-4/
The tiny homes craze has quieted down for the most part, at least compared to several years ago when it seemed like every TV channel had its own show about people moving into itty bitty houses or remodeled trailers or converted cargo containers. But in The Sims 4 it looks like the trend of tiny homes is just about to kick off. A trailer for The Tiny Living Stuff Pack has arrived, showing fancy yet wee little homes that occupy 100 tiles or fewer.

Red Dead Online wants to tempt you to become a moonshiner with new bonuses
https://www.pcgamer.com/red-dead-online-wants-to-tempt-you-to-become-a-moonshiner-with-new-bonuses/
I finally got enough gold together to buy my way into Red Dead Online's moonshiner career a wee while ago by completing daily challenges for the cheap gods of the Wild West. There's a lot of repetitive work involved in running a frontier business, though, so I confess I've not been taking care of it. With the latest update, however, Rockstar is trying to get me back to work.

https://www.pcgamer.com/overwatch-2-release-date-leak/
Someone on the PlayStation Brazil social media team got a bit overexcited this week and hit 'Tweet' before thinking, telling everyone that Overwatch 2 would be hitting PS4 in 2020. Blizzard's yet to announce a release date for any platforms and hasn't commented on the tweet, which has since been deleted.
