The reason to do it is very simple, to get people to sign up for EGS. This will be even more impactful when RL goes F2P. So it's not just to spite Steam. Every platform tries to get exclusives to grow their own marketplace. Steam is the only one who doesn't because they already have the monopoly, they don't need to fight for market share.

The console comparison is very apt. RL is an online game and a pretty old one at that, of course they aren't going to wait until RL 2 releases. Another good example is Bayonetta. Bayonetta 2 was a continuation of the story and basically a must buy for every Bayonetta fan. But it wasn't possible because it was bought by Nintendo, so it's not available to buy or play anywhere else. A real dick move. Nintendo paid for it, so it's their choice how much of a dick they want to be. Same with Epic and Psyonix. They literally pay for RL's existence, so of course they're gonna try to monetize it. And money = getting players on your store. It's the exact same dick move, though massively less impactful due to just being on a different launcher. To be even close to as bad as what Nintendo and other consoles are doing Psyonix would need to completely stop development on the Steam version and never provide any updates. And even then it wouldn't be quite as bad as selling useless plastic. Not to mention the game will still be available on every console.

Viv, Epic already has Fortnite and gives away free AAA games most weeks. If that's not enough to bring players to their store, Rocket League won't change that.

But if they really want to try it, it could work better with an hypothetical Rocket League 2, free to play like you mention and with the option to import your profile from the first game.

That's like saying that Sony should stop creating exclusive games because they already have enough to stay forever relevant. Just like Sony's brand power is based on many years and hundreds of quality exclusives as well as the continued release of said exclusives Epic need continuous output to bring more people over. Except that Epic has a giant monolith as competition and needs to do 10 times more to even start to be competitive.

RL is gonna be one of their bigger deals and will certainly draw a good bunch of people to them. All they need is to convince people to sign up and every little bit helps. RL is gonna be a pretty big little bit. And again, nothing is actually happening to the game or its players. Literally the only thing that's happening is that they remove the buy button on Steam. Something they probably wouldn't even need to do if the game launches F2P on EGS. Because why buy it on Steam when you can get it for free on EGS.

Epic is small compared to Valve. The question of "Why does Epic need more when it already has so much" seems a bit silly when you compare it to how much Valve has.

^ Ehhhh disappointed. But then if they need the extra time to polish and tweak the game for the better then its probably for the best

(also me)

Well at least this increases the odds I be able to get a 3080Ti (or what ever they call the successor of the 2080ti) into my computer before it releases.

It's funny how you talk about creating exclusives and releasing new exclusives and yet your whole idea is not to launch a new exclusive in the form of Rocket League 2 (or whatever name they come up with), but to coerce the current player of Rocket League into using only the Epic Store.

But it's ok. That's how you think Epic should/will do and that's all I asked for.

Disappointing but not unexpected. It's CD Projekt Red, and they've also been forced to work from home because of Covid-19. At least the delay is for only two months, which gives hope that there won't be more delays.

Let's hope the end result is worth it.

Releasing RL2 on EGS would actually be terrible for the game. It would split the player base. Basically RL2 cannot exist if the old game is still up, which means they would have to shut down the game on Steam. And that would be way worse than what they're doing now.
