I'd say not really, if you're just playing. If you're playing plus some background task (like streaming) as well, then those two extra cores help.

The Monday news:

Steam's Top 10

  1. Valve Index VR Kit
  2. Steam Controller
  3. Halo: The Master Chief Collection
  4. STAR WARS Jedi: Fallen Order
  5. PLAYERUNKNOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS
  6. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
  7. Grand Theft Auto V
  8. MONSTER HUNTER: WORLD
  9. Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition
  10. Football Manager 2020

>> I can understand the high sales of the Steam controller since it's dirt cheap and it's the last chance to get it, but the Valve Index VR Kit on top given how utterly expensive it is? That doesn't sound right (unless the list is based on the revenue, not the units sold, but then how come the controller is second?).

Bioshock designer remakes Doom’s iconic E1M1 in No Man’s Sky
https://www.dsogaming.com/news/bioshock-designer-remakes-dooms-iconic-e1m1-in-no-mans-sky/
Bioshock’s designer, JP LeBreton, has created a remake of the iconic E1M1 level from the first Doom game in No Man’s Sky. JP LeBreton used assets from the latest No Man’s Sky update, Synthesis, and the end result is really cool.
Due to the different assets that these two games have, this remake is not 1-1 accurate. For instance, No Man’s Sky does not feature any explosive barrels. As such, there are some artistic and environmental differences between them.
Still, JP LeBreton was able to replicate the exact map layout of Doom’s iconic map. Therefore, think of this remake as a re-imagination of Doom’s E1M1 in No Man’s Sky with completely different assets.

Quake 2 gets an AI-enhanced HD Texture Pack for its models
https://www.dsogaming.com/news/quake-2-gets-an-ai-enhanced-hd-texture-pack-for-its-models/
Quake2RTX is perhaps the best way to experience id Software’s classic shooter. However, this version basically requires an RTX graphics card. As such, and for all our non-RTX readers, there is a new AI-enhanced HD Texture Pack for Quake 2 that you can download and install right now.
The Quake 2 Neural Upscale 1.0.0 uses AI techniques in order to enhance and improve the game’s textures. This pack currently only overhauls the textures of its 3D models, and does not feature any textures for its world/environments.
You can download this HD Texture Pack from here. This add-on also provides upscaled bright player skins from nQuake2, making it suitable for competitive play. Do also note that you will need a source port that supports PNG images, such as Q2PRO, in order to use these new textures.

A modder is bringing Baby Yoda to Star Wars Battlefront 2
https://www.pcgamer.com/a-modder-is-bringing-baby-yoda-to-star-wars-battlefront-2/
I haven't watched The Mandalorian, the Disney Plus show about Boba Fett 3.0, but based on social media reactions it appears that the biggest thing to come out of it so far is Baby Yoda. I'm not sure how you determine that the laser-guided bundle of weapons grade is cute is actually a baby in the first place, except for the fact that it's less wrinkly that Old Yoda and rides around in a space-pram. (...) Soon, if all goes according to plan, Baby Yoda will make the leap from television to videogames: Modder Nanobuds revealed on Reddit that he's working on a Baby Yoda model for Star Wars Battlefront 2. Nanobuds said the image they shared earlier this week, and seen up above, is "just a quick test," and that the final version "will have the correct eyes." Hopefully it will also have a less scowly countenance overall, too, because right now it looks a lot more "Yoda" than "Baby" to me. (Those ears definitely need to be droopier, and it probably wouldn't hurt to soften up the forehead, too.)

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order mod turns Cal into the Joker

Cameron Monaghan, the actor who plays Cal Kestis in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, also played Jerome Valeska in Gotham—basically that show's stand-in for the Joker. Now you can Joker him up in Fallen Order with a mod that gives him green hair and greasepaint.
Look, that may make it slightly more fitting than the mod that turned Arthur Morgan from Red Dead Redemption 2 into the Joker, but it's still unsettling to have the Clown Prince of Crime running around with a lightsaber or interacting with a cheeky droid.
You can download it from NexusMods, which also hosts a few reshades and some other new looks for Cal, including a mustache.

To be honest, and I know it's a cliche in the PC environment, I'd wait until next year unless you're in a hurry to upgrade.

But I wouldn't do it for the possible upcoming products, but rather to know what specs will the next gen consoles pack. Given that they'll feature Ryzen CPUs, I'd wait to see the number of cores they have and the speed they run at to make sure that the CPU ypu choose can run the (badly) ported games.

Valve has run out of Steam Controllers and is cancelling orders
https://www.pcgamer.com/valve-has-run-out-of-steam-controllers-and-is-cancelling-orders/
Last week, Valve decided that it was time for the Steam Controller to be retired, just over four years after it launched. To get rid of the last of its stock and give people one more chance to snatch it up, Valve shaved the price down to £4/$5, which was a steal, even if the controller wasn't all it was cracked up to be. Unfortunately, it looks like the remaining stock has run out before the orders have been fulfilled.
People reported that they'd received refunds out of the blue, even for controllers that had allegedly shipped. Following that, Valve informed customers that it "mistakenly took more orders than [it was] able to fulfil." Unfortunately, since it's not making more of them, it can't just wait for more stock.

This mod for Fallout: New Vegas aims to fix the micro-stutter issues and high framerate bugs
https://www.dsogaming.com/news/this-mod-for-fallout-new-vegas-aims-to-fix-the-micro-stutter-issues-and-high-framerate-bugs/
Fallout: New Vegas is considered by many as one of the best Fallout games of all time. As such, we are presenting you today a mod that aims to completely fix the game’s micro-stuttering and high framerate issues/bugs.
According to modders Carxt, Tgspy, lStewieAl and c6 , this mod focuses on three major components; Tick Count bug, Common Code Inlining, and a High FPS Fix.
Tick Count is a bug that creates incredibly noticeable micro stutter issues. Not only that, but this bug is more likely to occur on better hardware, meaning that most PC gamers will experience it.
On the other hand, Common Code Inlining aims to help performance and decrease load times. To achieve this, the modders have fixed bits of code from the vanilla game that were quite intensive.
Last but not least, the High FPS setting fixes some bugs and glitches that could occur with high framerates. Therefore, this option allows you to play at framerates over 60 without the need to worry about the game’s physics or lipsync. However, do note that this option is disabled by default (so you’ll have to manual enable it).
>> You can get this mod from Nexus Mods.

Riot will pay $10M to settle gender discrimination lawsuit
https://www.pcgamer.com/riot-will-pay-dollar10m-to-settle-gender-discrimination-lawsuit/
In August, League of Legends studio Riot Games announced an agreement to settle a class action lawsuit filed against it in 2018 over pervasive sexism and gender-based discrimination at the studio. The studio said at the time that its internal investigation found that "gender discrimination (in pay or promotion), sexual harassment, and retaliation are not systemic issues at Riot," but acknowledged that "some Rioters have had experiences that did not live up to our values or culture."
The Los Angeles Times reported today that the settlement will cost Riot at least $10 million, which will be divided between approximately 1,000 women employed by the studio between November 2014 and the finalization of the settlement, which still needs to be settled by the court. Individual payouts will vary depending on the length of the employment period, as well as whether the workers were full-time employees, or on contract.

Got my Steam Controller, and it's GREAT. Playing Civ VI with it is awesome. Skyrim is... eh, it's fine. With a bit more time maybe I'll like it more than a standard gamepad for 1st/3rd person games but first impressions it's still good enough that I'll continue to use it for them rather than sync my other controllers back and forth between Console and PC.
