SALES & "SALES"/DEALS

Alan Wake is back on Steam and GOG, and it's on sale too
https://www.pcgamer.com/alan-wake-is-back-on-steam-and-its-on-sale-too/
Remedy's spooky shooter Alan Wake, which was removed from Steam in May 2017 because of "expiring music licenses," is now back on the platform.
"Big thanks to our partner and Alan Wake’s publishers @Microsoft who were able to renegotiate the rights to the licensed music in Alan Wake, so that the game can be sold again," Remedy said in a followup tweet. And yes, all the music from the original release is still in place.
Appropriately for the return and the season, Alan Wake is also on sale for 80 percent off—that's $3/£2/€3, or $1 more for the collector's edition—until November 1.
(Update: It's also back, and on sale, on GOG.)
>>It's great to have it back. Btw, it's also back, and on sale, on the Humble Store and Fanatical.

On the Humble Store the weekend sale revolves around the Total War franchise, with up to 90% discounts: https://www.humblebundle.com/store/promo/total-war-franchise-weekend/

And at Fanatical, there's a new Omen Bundle, with 11 games 97% off for the next 14 days: https://www.fanatical.com/en/bundle/omen-bundle

Here is Quake 2 Path Tracing running on the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080Ti at 1920×1080
https://www.dsogaming.com/videotrailer-news/here-is-quake-2-path-tracing-running-on-the-nvidia-geforce-rtx-2080ti-at-1920x1080/
YouTube’s ‘Thavex’ has shared a video, showing Quake 2 Path Tracing running on the latest high-end GPU, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080Ti. In case you weren’t aware of, this real-time path tracing is possible thanks to Amietia; a from-scratch GPU-based pathtracer created specifically for Quake 2.
Amietia – which you can download from here – has several optimisations which are only viable due to the typical characteristics of Quake 2 such as support for parallogram-shaped lightsources, BSP ray traversal, and special handling of sky ‘surfaces’ (portals).
Now us you will notice, there is a lot of noise (which is a side-effect to the low samples that are used for the real-time path tracing). From what I know its developer has not used any de-noiser which is a shame. Not only that, but this GPU-based pathtracer does not take advantage of the RTX2080Ti tensor cores.

Team Fortress 2008 throwback mod Steam page removed (Updated)
https://www.pcgamer.com/team-fortress-2-throwback-mod-reverts-game-back-to-2008-heading-to-steam/
Turn back time with XYK's Team Fortress 2008—a TF2 throwback mod that "reverts the game back to its 2008 version".
Due on Steam on January 11, 2019, its creator says the SourceMod is an alternative to Valve's esteemed Team Fortress 2 and is designed for "those who prefer the game before most of the later updates, and want the simpler old interface."
As reported by Eurogamer, Valve has given the TF-2008 team permission to list the mod on Steam—but did ask that the original idea be altered beforehand. It seems XYK et al happily complied.
Update: The Steam page for XYK's Team Fortress 2008 mod has been pulled. As reported by Eurogamer, a screenshot from the project's Discord (also now shuttered) suggests Valve could not be convinced at this stage that the TF-2008 team has created a mod for the original game, and is "not just repurposing leaked code".
As also reported by EG, it appears creator XYK left the project's Discord server with a distasteful parting comment.

Friday news, part two:

Hellgate: London is coming back, again
https://www.pcgamer.com/hellgate-london-is-coming-back-again/
Hellgate: London debuted in 2007 with an interesting setup that was brought low by half-baked execution. It went under a couple of years later, came back as a free-to-play MMO that didn't really go anywhere, took a run at Steam Greenlight in 2014, and I'm not really sure what happened after that, to be honest. It's been quite a ride. And it's not over yet, because HanbitSoft, which acquired the rights to the game a decade ago and redeveloped it as Hellgate London: Resurrection in South Korea, is bringing it back to Steam in November.

Swords and Soldiers 2 Shawarmageddon multiplayer beta is live and open to everyone
https://www.pcgamer.com/swords-and-soldiers-2-shawarmageddon-multiplayer-beta-is-live-and-open-to-everyone/
Awesomenauts developer Ronimo Games released Swords and Soldiers 2 for the Wii U in 2015, then earlier this year went to Kickstarter in search of funding for an updated PC and PS4 version called Swords and Soldiers 2 Shawarmageddon. That didn't work out very well, but the developers said it would launch later this year anyway. Such optimistic promises often fade away and are forgotten, but not in this case: The game is set to come out on November 6, and a multiplayer open beta is now underway.

Layers of Fear 2 revealed, set to come out next year
https://www.pcgamer.com/layers-of-fear-2-revealed-set-to-come-out-next-year/
Project Méliès was teased in March as the codename for the next project in the works at Bloober Team—which is a surprising name for the developer of games including Layers of Fear and Observer. (Seriously, who calls a horror game studio "Bloober Team?") Today publisher Gun Media rolled out a teaser revealing that the "new masterpiece" behind Méliès is actually Layers of Fear 2.

The Room 3 is finally headed to Steam
https://www.pcgamer.com/the-room-3-is-finally-headed-to-steam/
Puzzle game The Room was originally released for iOS devices in 2012, and was a big hit—enough that a PC version was eventually launched on Steam in 2014. The Room 2 came to mobiles in 2013, and Steam in 2016. And in keeping with that pattern, The Room 3, which hit iOS hardware in 2015, will finally arrive on Steam on November 13.

A new Yooka-Laylee update will make it look more like a Nintendo 64 game
https://www.pcgamer.com/a-new-yooka-laylee-update-will-make-it-look-more-like-a-nintendo-64-game/
In its efforts to channel the colourful, collect 'em up platformers of the Nintendo 64 era, studio Playtonic Games forgot one crucial element when it developed Yooka-Laylee: the game didn't look murky enough. It was crisp and lively and joyous, even if it did launch with some teething problems. But now – presumably after popular demand – the studio is releasing a patch that will make the game look more like something from the 1990s. It's optional, mercifully enough.

Scum's adding heart attacks to deal with a player who won't stop eating
https://www.pcgamer.com/scums-adding-heart-attacks-to-deal-with-a-player-who-wont-stop-eating/
Last month we told you about one player's quest to become the heaviest character in Scum, testing the limits of the simulationist survival game by chowing down on the undead. He's up to 400 kilograms now, by the way.
Speaking to PC Gamer at PAX Australia, Devolver Digital co-founder Graeme Struthers explained that Scum's creators are well aware of this heroic effort. "There is one guy on Reddit who has attracted quite a lot of attention because he's trying to figure out the most efficient way of getting fat," Struthers said. "The implication of that will be a heart attack, because in real life you'd reach that point. Those kind of things will start to be added in, so that's probably going to be the end of eating zombie fat."
>>That's taking things too far, from both sides. But at least it's a funny confrontation.

Ni no Kuni 2 reveals 'The Lair of the Lost Lord' DLC, due in 2018
https://www.pcgamer.com/ni-no-kuni-2-reveals-the-lair-of-the-lost-lord-dlc-due-in-2018/
Austin billed Ni no Kuni 2 as "one the best JRPGs on PC". That's hardly faint praise, and while its first slice of added content didn't add too much to the Revenant Kingdom (it was free, after all), its first portion of premium DLC sounds more whole wholesome. It's due "this winter".

For Honor Halloween event returns with skeletons and smashing pumpkin heads
https://www.pcgamer.com/for-honor-halloween-event-returns-with-skeletons-and-smashing-pumpkin-heads/
Last year, For Honor dived into Halloween with its Feast of the Otherworld event. This year, it's back for seconds—The Return of the Overworld is live now through November 8.
With it comes armies of skeleton warriors, challenges, quests, rewards, and a man whose head is transformed into a pumpkin that he then lifts off and splatters over the floor. There's an sentence I didn't expect to write today.

Just Cause 4 'panoramic trailer' tailored for 4K ultra-widescreen monitors

I don't have a widescreen monitor, so the trailer above is a wee bit wasted on me. I mean, it's nice to see more of Just Cause 4, in any event. And I'm guessing loads of you lot have widescreen monitors, so this doesn't feel like an entirely wasted exercise.

How old is your card? Could it be that the heatsink has too much dust and can't properly cool the card?

Nearly four years, it's a GTX 970.

It's entirely possible, likely even I'd say, but I'm somewhat afraid of opening it and end up making it worse or even breaking the card somehow, thermal paste has always been the worst part of building PCs to me :/

You can always buy a can of compressed air (or use an air compressor if you have one) to blow the dust off of your card without having to open it.

It would be a cheaper option than buying a new card.

Furthermore, this driver improves game stability in Shadow of the Tomb Raider and allows audio receiver to switch from multi-channel to stereo when audio playback is paused and it increases period from 5 seconds to 10 seconds.
Do note, however, that Windows 8.1 64bit are not supporting for Turing cards. As NVIDIA noted, Windows 8.1 x64 is not supported on Turing graphics cards including the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, GeForce RTX 2080 and GeForce RTX 2070. Ironically, the older OS, Windows 7 64-bit, is supported.

https://www.dsogaming.com/news/this-mod-for-skyrim-allows-players-to-destroy-330-objects-destructible-buildings-coming-in-future/
Modder ‘FriendlyAnt’ has released a pretty interesting mod for Skyrim. As its title suggests, the Destructible Objects Mod adds destruction data to a number of Skyrim objects so that players can destroy them.
According to its description, this mod makes combat more tense since you have to watch where you aim, otherwise you might destroy something valuable. Not only that, but you can also destroy doors so that you can enter buildings without using the Lock Picking skill.
Right now, this mod adds 900+ destructible objects. All 86 flora objects can be destroyed, as well as furniture (bedrolls, beds, chairs, forges, enchant & alchemy tables) and moveable static objects (like human bones, city banners, campfires and water wheels).

Turn Monster Hunter's cat pals into man's true best friend with the Canine Palico mod
https://www.pcgamer.com/turn-monster-hunters-cat-pals-into-mans-true-best-friend-with-the-canine-palico-mod/
I love Monster Hunter World's Palicos. My feline companion rides with me into battle, heals me when I need healing (sometimes), and occasionally even puts a monster to sleep. He looks like kind of a smarmy wise-ass, as most cats are. But I still know in my heart of hearts that dogs are the superior pets, and I love that someone went to great lengths to replace Monster Hunter's palicos with pups in the Canine Palico mod "for those who prefer dogs. Now with sounds!"
>> Everybody knows that dogs > cats. It's a fact.

Desert Bus for Doom adds violence to the monotony
https://www.pcgamer.com/desert-bus-for-doom-adds-violence-to-the-monotony/
Desert Bus is notoriously one of the most boring games of all time, and that, I suppose, is what's so good about it. Richard Cobbett named it in his article about the 11 most boring sims on PC, and it definitely belongs there: it's an eight hour drive through featureless virtual desert. Nothing happens and it sucks. That's what's so good about it.
Revenant Bus is a bit different. It's basically the Desert Bus experience brought to Doom 2, but with one major twist: a revenant spawns in the back of the bus every seven seconds. Given the lack of weapons (you have to punch the revenants to death) and the 24 hour duration of the bus trip (you need to go back for your wallet), that's a very monotonous bus trip indeed. But at least there's punching involved.
>> It's a (classic) DOOM mod, and you can get it from here.

https://www.dsogaming.com/news/warriors-orochi-4-boobs-physics-are-bugged-at-60fps-you-can-get-bouncing-boobs-by-locking-at-30fps/
Earlier today, it was falsely reported that all versions of Warrior’s Orochi 4 were censored except of the Nintendo Switch version. The reason behind this claim was the lack of bouncing boobs in the PC, PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game. For some unknown reason, these versions did not feature any bouncing boobs in the character viewer whereas the Nintendo Switch version had. However, it appears that this is just a bug and not censorship.

Two Point Hospital debuts its Sandbox: Freeplay mode at TwitchCon today, which will roll out to all players next week.
Marked as the "first in a line of planned Sandbox updates for Two Point Hospital", Sandbox: Freeplay lets players rename hospitals and unlock every option—which allows you to "make it rain", so tells the narrator below.
>> It goes without saying, but that next week is actually this week.

Nier: Automata's android protagonist 2B will soon become part of Soulcalibur 6's roster of fighters, Bandai Namco revealed today.
She'll arrive in the game as DLC with many of the same moves as she had in the action RPG, relying heavily on her dual blades—Virtuous Contract and Virtuous Treaty—for quick strikes and mid-air slashes, a lot of which you can see in her trailer above.

Star Control: Origins opens up to mods with new world editor
https://www.pcgamer.com/star-control-origins-adds-world-editor-enables-modding/
Ian found some things to like in arcadey space RPG Star Control: Origins, particularly in the combat, but said its galaxy felt empty and forced you to grind. Perhaps the new world editor and mod support, added this week, will let creative players bring out the best in it while getting rid off the boring bits.

The Evil Within 2 adds new difficulty mode and enables cheats
https://www.pcgamer.com/the-evil-within-2-adds-new-difficulty-mode-and-enables-cheats/
Excellent survival horror sequel The Evil Within 2 has added a new nightmarish difficulty mode and enabled cheats—but only if you have a Bethesda.net account.
Anyone that signs up for an account, or links to an existing one, will get the Akumu difficulty level as well as access to cheats such as invincibility, one-shot kills and infinite stamina.
>> Now they're locking content to force you create accounts? How desperate is that?

Black Ops 4 players are crouch-running at super speeds thanks to a perk glitch
https://www.pcgamer.com/black-ops-4-players-are-crouch-running-at-super-speed-thanks-to-a-glitch/
Players are using a Black Ops 4 glitch that lets you stack the same perk multiple times to gain super speed in multiplayer matches—and Treyarch is cracking down on anyone exploiting it.
The glitch involves a complicated process of joining and leaving custom lobbies, creating a specific custom class, using certain equipment and completing a sequence of in-game actions, but the upshot is that you can clone any perk, stacking the effects on your character. Players have been doing it with the Skulker perk—which normally lets you move a bit faster while crouching or prone—to create super-speedy soldiers that zip around the map at 100mph, legs bent.

Dataminers suggest Chinese EVE Online cheaters could be punished with virtual menial labour
https://www.pcgamer.com/chinese-eve-online-cheaters-to-be-punished-with-virtual-menial-labour/
There are indications that the Chinese version of EVE Online might be about to take an unusual approach to punishing players who cheat in the game. Rather than simply banning players who are discovered botting or otherwise illicitly playing the infamously challenging space-sim, rogue captains may find themselves breaking asteroids in space-prison.

Maid of Sker is a new and extremely British horror game
https://www.pcgamer.com/maid-of-sker-is-a-new-and-extremely-british-horror-game/
Bridgend-based developer Wales Interactive has announced a new and distinctly British first-person horror game.
Titled the Maid of Sker, Wales Interactive explains it is a “first-person stealth survival horror”, based on a slice of Welsh folklore surrounding the real-life Sker House, which is situated a few miles from the developer’s home-town. Originally built by Cistercian monks over 900 years ago, Sker House has long been associated with the paranormal, made famous by R.D. Blackmore’s novel, also titled The Maid of Sker.

SALES & DEALS

Monster Hunter World has sold 10.9 million copies worldwide, half of it possibly coming from the PC
https://www.dsogaming.com/news/monster-hunter-world-has-sold-10-million-copies-worldwide-half-of-it-possibly-coming-from-the-pc/
Capcom has announced that Monster Hunter World has sold 10.9 million copies worldwide. This information comes from the official FAQ that can be found on the company’s Japanese website as well as the company’s latest fiscal report, and as it’s pointed out, about 70% of the total was sold abroad.
Now what’s really interesting here is that according to Steamspy, the game has sold between 5 and 10 million copies on the PC. The free version of Steamspy does not provide any accurate numbers, however it’s possible that the game has sold at least 5 million copies on the PC, meaning that half of its worldwide sales are coming from our platform. Since Steamspy does not provide any accurate numbers, we suggest taking this with a grain of salt though.
>> If true, that almost guarantees that future games of the franchise will launch on PC too.

Dragon Quest XI Orchestral Overhaul mod is now compatible with the latest game version
https://www.dsogaming.com/news/dragon-quest-xi-orchestral-overhaul-mod-is-now-compatible-with-the-latest-game-version/
Earlier this month, Square Enix released a major patch for Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age. This patch added more framerate options, added three (Low, Medium, High) pre-set graphic settings to choose from and brought some control improvements. Unfortunately, though, this patch also broke compatibility with the Orchestra Overhaul mod.
The team behind this mod has been working on a new version that would be compatible with the game’s latest version and we are happy to report that this new version is now available for download.
>> Available from Steam.

First Soul Calibur VI nude mod released for all male and female, custom or original, characters
https://www.dsogaming.com/news/first-soul-calibur-vi-nude-mod-released-for-all-male-and-female-custom-or-original-characters/
Modder ‘Sakura4’ has released the first proper nude mod for SoulCalibur 6. While an earlier mod allowed players to create custom naked characters, it did not have any affect on the original cast. However, this nude mod can be used for both custom and original characters, and there are currently separate versions for male and female characters.
According to the modder, this mod will allow you to play as a nude character that will be only visible to yourself. This basically means that other players when playing online will not see your character naked. However, and as we’ve always stated regarding mods in online games, we strongly suggest disabling it and using it only in offline mode.
>> Well, it was bound to happen, right? As always with nude mods, no links were provided, but the mod is available from Nexus Mods.

Now the image that the studio has shared is not 100% identical to the blood found on the game’s original boxart, which is why I’m marking this as a rumour.
