Forums - Gaming Discussion - You will need ~$650 bucks to match next gen consoles on PC

disolitude said:

I saw this on Toms Hardware and figured I'd post it here. This is pretty much a PC that will rival consoles in terms of gaming capability. Its more powerful than the PS4 and X1, but it needs the extra power to compute all the extras that come with running a PC.

Conclusion:

If you are a gamer and want best bang for your buck, now is the time to buy a console. 2-3 years later as these console age and PCs get more powerful and cheaper, story will be different.

This fall PS4 and X1 will come with a lot of extras like controllers, bluray, Kinect 2.0...and are cheaper than this PC to begin with. They will provide amazing gaming value...

Crap. Now I want to build this. Thanks alot. :P

Build my system 2 years ago, AMD 6 core, 16 GB DDR3 RAM, 3 TB HD, ASUS mobo w/USB 3.0 ports, RADEON HD 6790 with 1 GB VRAM. Cost me about $500 before the OS purchase. (Newegg has some good rebate programs)

All I need to do to get it to blow out the upcoming consoles for this gen is to replace mt vid card with a $260 vid card, I've got this one lined up for a purchase this fall - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161432 - it has 4GB GDDR5 RAM on it, and thats for graphics alone, not to mention the afore-mentioend 16 GB DDR3 RAM for all other processing. Hell, with this vid card, my rig might be more powever than the PS FIVE =)

Plus, as an added bonus, I don't have to play games with crappy thumbstick controls. Mouse is a lot more fluid for those headshots!

That 7850 won't blow away the PS4's GPU with OS overhead, although the RAM amount is impressive, what AMD processor are you using? Also, with a 7850 and a six core AMD CPU, your rig won't blow away the PS4 at all, I have a 7850 in my rig so I know what the card is capabe of, however I have an I5 with only 2GB VRAM but seeing as my i5 is better than your CPU, I'd put our rigs at about the same. A 7850 won't be as potent as the PS4's GPU which has more access to higher bandwith memory, and considering you have a AMD CPU in your rig, I'm willing to bet that it's nowhere as near powerful as you think.

The fact that your touting your rig when it's not even impressive makes me doubt that you actually even have one, to be honest. I5 - I7, 7870 - 7990 or Gtfo.

Sorry man. I know what you mean though...Im tempted to build a gtx780 mITX build with HDMi in and leave consoles be for now. Those exclusives though are hard to ignore...

7870xt beats the 7950. Look it up...

Just wondering why is 7870xt cheaper than 7950 from quick search. Also where does the new GTX 760 fit in. Thanks.

In terme of gaming performance you could rate these card like this

660ti < 760 < 670 < 7950~= 7870xt

When you start overclocking 7950 should beat all.

As long as we're talking purely about gaming, it's a no-brainer that consoles are the better choice. Afterall, that's what they're made for. It'd be a shame if they end up inferior to an all-purpose device.

I use both PC and consoles for gaming and your comment is just plain wrong. It is very much a preference thing and definitely not a no brainer, if you have the money then you can achieve significantly better gaming performance from a PC, Bang for buck consoles are better but as the article shows it only takes a midrange gaming macine to equal the performance of a console. some games are also better suited for a PC and vise versa.

Friend, I exclusively play on PC. I don't own a PS3, 360, or a Wii. I do have emulators though from NES to the Wii.

My statement was based around the premise that you can only afford gaming platform, so it's out of the question if one has enough money to spend on a PC. In the first place, game engines are more optimized for the consoles, so our more expensive rigs can only appear slightly better looking than console counterparts. Our version of Witcher 2 didn't look like Witcher 3 on the PS4, despite the fact that our rig could have very well produced such visuals.

It's completely different http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/EVGA/GTX_760_SC_ACX_Cooler/27.html

760 is the best card you can buy right now for that kind of money.

But it's still be nothing compare to the ps4.

I've been a console guy all my life but.....in the long run? It would save you hundreds or dollars buying this PC, even at an extra $200.00. Why? Because Steam sales destroy console prices. Super Meat Boy was $2.50 at one point while it was $15.00 on XBLA. So if you have the money up front? The PC is the better choice.

Damn youre right. I saw it had less cores than 660ti but didnt realize the bus was 256bit... Yeah 760 is better than all except crazy overclocked 7950 and  670

This is the price today, not Oct/Nov. You can also get this stuff for cheaper if you shop around. X1 and ps4 are going to be MSRP for a long time, but PC parts get rebates, sales and price drops regularly. I wouldnt be surprised if you could get this $100 to $200 cheaper by the time the consoles come out. Both systems are a value for their price but assuming this build is a good comparison PC is a good value as well. Theres many other x factors to take in as well when determining value but thats another discussion.

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.
