Unfortunately, that's because we're all trained to think the more mega pixels the better. Bottom line is more rides on the image sensor (that actually captures light) as well as the lense (maybe not so much for cell phones). The HTC has a bigger image sensor which is supposed to make a world of difference. I haven't used it personally (I have the S3), but I'm saying don't dismiss it just because of lack of "megapixels".
Do you remember those original Mars rover pictures that were taken a while back? The panoramic shot? AMAZING shot. That was a 1 (yes ONE) Megapixel camera. The image sensor and lense cost MILLIONS of dollars though. I believe the newest Mars rover is only 2 Megapixel. Again, the image sensor will be huge and expensive, allowing more distinguishable light to be captured. Just sayin...

No i understand that. I did quite a lot of research into the HTC One camera and I did not dismiss it.
But now that i have actually bought the phone and taken pictures with it in multiple scenarios I can withouth a doubt say that the camera is subpar. Low light performance is good but the image quality is lacking. Sorry bro i dunno how else to describe it :/

Hey no problem I believe you! I just thought maybe you were assuming some stuff too. Well I guess at the end of the day, it would be nice to have the better / bigger image sensor AND the megapixel rendering capability. But my guess is the image senesor cost them a slight premium, causing them to have to skimp on the megapixels keep the phone cost down.
The trend toward better sensors is for the better ultimately though. Most camera phones have sucked in low light.

Yeah i agree! I think the HTC One 2 will maybe have a 8 Ultra Pixel camera?
That should make for an awesome camera.
