Animal Crossing > Zelda?

Zelda has always been considered in Nintendo's big 3 selling series along with Mario & Pokemon. It is always a very anticipated game and often mentioned as a game that will help revive a failing system.

Animal Crossing is a somewhat newer series that has only been around for about a decade. It is often considered a casual-type of game that the more core player wouldn't want to play. Yet, its sales have been very good as it is often considered a best seller on each Nintendo system released.

  • GC)  Zelda TWW: 4.6 Million compared to Animal Crossing: 3.1 Million (1.5 Million difference)
  • Wii)  Zelda TP: 6.7 Million compared to Animal Crossing CF: 4.4 Million (2.3 Million difference)
  • DS) Zelda PH: 4.9 Million compared to Animal Crossing WW: 11.8 Million (6.9 Million difference)
  • 3DS) Zelda OOT3D: 3 Million (so far) compared to Animal Crossing NL: 3.9 Million (so far) (900K difference)

OOT3D is just a remake but New Leaf will have no trouble selling at least double ALBW.

All in all, Zelda outsells AC on consoles by a good amount but on HH's AC by far outsells Zelda. People often consider Pokemon as a bigger series than Zelda despite its weak console sales. Can the same be said for Animal Crossing? Plus, unlike Pokemon, AC still sells very well on home systems too. I also anticipate Animal Crossing U being the biggest console AC yet, even possibly outselling Zelda U.

Some might say it isn't all about sales, and that Zelda creates much more hype in the gaming community. I disagree, and say AC obviously creates anticipation too, just not as much for the core gamer.

In the end, I personally rank Animal Crossing in Nintendo's Top 3 big sellers along with Mario & Pokemon. I think it has now passed Zelda in terms of importance. Do you disagree? State your reasoning and we can discuss it!

I can't disagree, but Animal Crossing seems mainly important for the handhelds, where for the home console, at the moment, isn't a system seller. The real problem is that Zelda seems not to be anymore a system seller as in the past (both in handheld and home console).

Animal Crossing certainly seems like an IP that's still growing while Zelda has remained relatively flat in sales since Z:OoT with some entries doing better than others.

Animal Crossing is more important on hand helds. Zelda beats AC on home consoles.

I'm sure AC helped sell some GC's & Wii's. Just not as much as Zelda. I agree, Zelda seems to be shrinking in sales as time goes on.

Would you say that Pokemon is bigger than Zelda? Animal Crossing is slowly catching up to Zelda with consoles and is extending the gap for HH's. I actually see AC passing Zelda console-wise with the Wii U too.

Yea, AC could actually become bigger than Zelda.  I believe AC has a more broader appeal than Zelda.  AC has the ability to attract more females towards the game than Zelda probably can pull in.  If you appeal to females more then that opens up your potential consumer base a lot.  Met a lot of people from women in their 20s, men in their 40s-50s, kids, etc that play AC.  So it seems like AC could easily become bigger than Zelda.

I'd say AC already is bigger than Zelda. Its HH sales completely trash Zelda!

Animal Crossing does have a very wide appeal, which is awesome!

Its because zelda dispite being good games always finds a way to alienate there fanbase either by cartoon art style or full on motion control.Nintendo needs to look back and see these as mistakes but they dont so zelda will continue to sell less with each game they put out. With there being only one game per console you have to make it perfect at list animal crossing manages to stay the same but still add good new content to please old and new fans to keep the sales growing!!! Zelda tp was an increase in sales with the wii and gc nintendo should have done a majoras mask and turned out a game in that style again and ignored the motion controls of skyward sword witch turn so many away with the different gameplay! Shorter developing time and familiarity would help nintendo keep the fanbase intact!

That actually makes a lot of sense. Nintendo keeps hindering Zelda's potential by doing odd things to the games. At the same time, City Folk has less sales than it could've had too because people saw it as a lazy Wild World port.

... What about Mario Kart and Smash Bros.? Or the Wii_ games like Fit, Sports and Party? Or even the DK games? Compared to those franchises, Zelda is pretty niche, sales-wise. I mean, take Mario Kart; it's the very definition of a system seller.

Zelda's a bit like Metroid, albeit to a much lesser extent, in that it's seen as an important franchise for Nintendo, while in reality, it's not that big a big seller at all.
