Nintendo will struggle until they can get their price $200 or below. That is their core demographic price ceiling... maybe as high as $250, but that would still be a hard sell. They have some good looking titles coming up with Mario Kart 8 and Smash Bros, but until they get rid of the price barrier they will struggle to sell units. The price is the main restraint to hardware adoption. They also need to address the tablet controller. If they aren't willing to sell it as a stand alone, then that is reason for concern. Either dump the tablet or allow consumers to buy a replacement tablet controller should it break.

I understand part of what you are saying but the Wii U is a lot more advanced than the typical PS360.  Those are still selling ~$250-300 at the moment.  A single SKU of the Deluxe at $300 is a good value and should entice consumers as long as it's marketed well.

BTW anybody care to think when they should re-launch the system. It'll be suicidal for them (IMHO) to cut the price of the system this November or Dec when the PS4 and X1 launches.

When else should they do it? Do you think they should bury their heads in the sand and hope the whole PS4 & XB1 thing blows over instead?

I think they should do it this August when Pikmin launches. This definitely would work better than putting their relaunch in front of speeding train that is the X1/PS4 launch.  They should also include a playable downloaded demo of Mario 3D world, Wonderful 101,  Rayman Legends etc.  Honestly, Nintendo's weakest link is their marketing, their engineers and software designers  are very good but they have crappy marketing!!!

Playable demos are not a bad idea actually.  Bring back the demo disk!

I remember those from the ps1 days.

no need for demo disk, we've got flash storage now to keep all those.  It's just marketing which is Nintendo's biggest weakness in my opinion!!!

As soon as Mario Kart and Mario World 3D launches they both need to be bundled ASAP.

I thought it would have been very cool if they had released the Best Buy demos to every Wii U owner during E3. They were so close, and that would have won it for them easily. I swear the first to figure out how to line this up has a guaranteed E3 win for that year.

As for August, I'm not sure Pikmin has the power to push a relaunch. They really might have to wait for the Kart / Smash combo, but at least that is pretty much guaranteed to make an impact.

Too late to wait for Kart and Smash. I think it would be too late for even 3D world as the PS4/X1 would have launched.  It's better to strike before the competition is here.  It's like preparing for an invasion; you don't do it when the frigates and carriers are on your territorial waters before setting up your missle batteries.

Yes, but they needed something to strike with. This entire year should have been a head start and a chance to get a leg up on the competition, but pretty much everything ended up delayed. I would say they have a good shot if the PS4 & XB1 have a similar slow first year, and they come out swinging with 2 of their best in early 2014.

Also, if they go with August they risk being overshadowed by something great at Gamescom.

I agree 100% with cutting the Basic sku and dropping the Deluxe to $299, have some better value bundles at $349 like 32gb w/NSMBU+Wiimote and 32gb w/COD+pro controller. I also think doing this alongside the launch of Pikmin 3 is a good idea since it's when games will start releasing on a consistant basis and will give them time to build momentum going into the Holidays.

Maybe in April they can bring the Deluxe down to $249 to coincide with Mario Kart 8 and release $299 Mario Kart bundle. That would be a great way to start next fiscal year off strong.

Ive said multiple times, it makes no sense to do price cut/relaunch during the holidays since it gives no chance to build momentum and retailers are doing there own discounts/bundles.

I'm getting a lot of interesting combo's for a re-launch which shows the system really does need one to help gain momentum along with new game releases. Now the timing of when the re-launch is now in debate. I say August anyone else think otherwise?

september or october.

September than as Pikmin 3 would already be out and 101 and Rayman Legends is around the corner.  An early re-launch with a price cut is something to strike with and the 2014 games would ensure that they continue to strike.  It's all about getting as many console to peoples hands before the competition and Nintendo should do this ASAP!!!

WRONG cutting the price around the time competition come can prove efficient. i think that getting rid of the basic model and making the deluxe $289 with Nintendoland and new super mario bros U pre downloaded would do wonders for the system.

don't think that'll happen.  The best scenario is 32GB NintendoLand for $299 with built in demos of MK8, M3DW, DK:TF etc this August or September; any later than that it would be game over for an effective relaunch.

around the time competition come = a little before too, not at the exact same time the other launch. 3ds for instance had the price cut a few months before vita released and i think september/october will work well for wii u.

Agreed. But it'll take time before those games get here.  They need a re-launch before the PS4/X1 launches.  They could bundle those games for an additional $30-40 after they come out!!! ($329-$349)
