As the motion gaming and "waggle" associated with it became a cliche over the last few years, Nintendo should have realized that they can't milk the blue ocean anymore with the exact same shtick and that the majority of their Wii owners aren't going to run out and upgrade on day 1. Considering that majority of Wiis have been collecting dust for the last 2 years due to lack of quality software, it would have been wise for Nintendo to leave the Wii image and branding in the past and move on.

WiiU should have been a brand new console in terms of design, with a new name, new image, new marketing message... WiiU is actually a decent console with lots of potential but the mass market has moved on from what made the Wii such a success, and they can't differentiate much between the two.

Agree in a way.. I do believe that the name confuses consumers.. and Nintendo is having the same problem to a point with the 3DS... there is a lot of parents who bought their children a DS and still don't know the differance between a DS and 3DS.. (I read a thread on Amazon about it just recently ironically enough) And the beauty part is.. once they find out.. what the difference is.. they get mad.. and say they are not paying for a new console when they just bought a Dsi.. or DS Lite.. whatever the situation is.. they don't realize that the 3DS is an upgrade to the DS.. and are still buying a regular DS.. which is what I think is happening with the Wii as well.. or as suggested here.. they think the Wii U is just a Tablet upgrade and don't realize it's a whole new system.. but I think it's very confusing to parents of younger gamers.. However I somewhat disagree as well.. as was suggested.. Wii is a strong brand name.. so no.. I think they could have kept the Wii part of the name to show it's part of the family.. (Like Sony does with the Playstation) But maybe call it something like Wii Dream... or Wii 2 (Once again like Playstation family) I also believe they need to show a lot more commercials.. and show that it is indeed a new system.. not just the same old Wii.. Comercials help a lot.. The best marketing the Wii U has gotten for a while.. actually was the Best Buy Demos while E3 was on..

Predictions made by gamers concerning the current Nintendo line up of games.

Pikmen 3= Little Bump to nothing. (Got Little Bump)

Wind Waker HD= Won't sell anything (The explosion happened here and at one time 4 Wii U games was in the Amazon top 100)

Super Mario 3D World= Won't help at all looks cheap. (Currently the most sought after Wii U game and continuing the Wii U increase.)

If i had to choose one and only one problema, i`d choose the way Nintendo presented the console to gamers and non gamers.

Adding the U to the Wii brand was not the problem, the problem was how Nintendo revealed the console (not just the actual console, but the gamepad and the games).
From just focusing on the gamepad to making a box to the system where it almost seems that Nintendo is hiding the HW behind the gamepad. Not to forget how it decided to make it basically look like a rounded Wii and the commercials that made no actual separation between Wii and Wii U.

For people unaware, the gamepad might have looked like the U to their Wii: Wii + U and not Wii U.

Calling it Wii U made everyone think that it wasn't a hardware upgrade... I guess the letter U didn't turn out progressive enough.



Eh. Nintendo kinda did the Super thing with the SNES. Wii 2 would have been a bad name with Sony doing the PS4 and with the 360 and the XBox 1 and the 3DS. To the casual eye consoles would be a gigantic soup of numbers.

I confess, the Wii U is a tough system to name because of its uniqueness and because the name has to work in Japanese as well as English. And it has to be distinct from the Wii. This is a tough bunch of criteria and I think the Wii U is "good enough."

I honestly thought that if they would have done better naming it "Nii" or something. They managed to strike gold with the name Wii but Wii U lacked in comparison, along with looking very similar to the last Wii redesign probably confused folk.

But aside from the subpar name, the biggest mistake was not having the games or the system itself ready even when they had announced the system over a year before.

Edit: Looking at the schedule, the lack of plans such as being able to purchase or use two tablets at once, Nintendo seems to have gone over board on their normally economic approach to hardware design and software leaving the system looking like the Wii HD analysts had said Nintendo should have dropped back in 2010.



You're right. They should have made a different brand and a different message, I would have kept the Wii brand to label games focused on motion controles, just like Kinect or PsMove.

Improved Wiimote/Nunchuk, yes.

It's a pretty useless console as it is. I don't use the Gamepad for NSMBU and NSLU, I won't use it for Pikmin 3, DKC:TF and SM3DW. So the main benefit of the Wii U is better graphics which is as underwhelming as it can get. All those games might as well have been on the Wii, that way I wouldn't need to own a rubbish console that can't download and install things at the same time.

So do you think motion controls, generally speaking, add to the gameplay experience?

About the gamepad, why don't u use it? Do you have one of those hardcore controllers instead?

What do u mean "can't download and install things at the same time", is that important to you or are you just ironic?

I'm going to stop you right there. The vast majority of consumers are not stupid. If they think that the Wii U is an add-on to the Wii, then that's a fault on Nintendo's part in failing to correctly market the system, but it isn't because of the name. Consumers don't see "Wii U" and go "oh, that's an add-on for the Wii?" and keep walking past.

Unfortunately, gamers who spend a lot of time on the internet have a tendency to think themselves smart and the "mainstream market" to be stupid. This is very much a wrong impression. Even as gamers call out games like Just Dance as "casual crap", the mainstream have been very particular about which games they will play, very selective. Far moreso than gamers, as demonstrated, for instance, by the fact that Haze sold nearly a million copies, while No More Heroes on the PS3 sat at around 150,000 copies sold.
