Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Biggest mistake Nintendo made with the WiiU

Calling it the Wii U and making it look almost identical was/is a big mistake. Like others have said, it would have been so easy to call it Wii 2 and just change the design to differenciate them visually. It's absurd that many people still think it's an add-on this long after launch.

Its still a poor comparison, you're not taking into account that Haze came out WAY before NMH hit PS3 stateside, we are talking a difference in years. You're not taking into account that they are different genres, where FPS just happens to be more popular than whatever genre NMHs is, and you are not taking into account pure subjectivity of it all, who is to say what game is better than what. IMHO they both suck, but i would play Haze in a heartbeat, because at least its not boring like NMHs, thats just me. WHo is a good judge of games? YOu?

On Metacritic, NMH on PS3 is at 72, with the Wii version at 83. Haze is at 55. Just one site rated NMH on PS3 less than 50%, and that was 1UP - which gave it a 42, and Haze a 33. 13 sites gave Haze a rating under 50%, with two giving a 25% score. Only one site gave Haze a rating over 75%, and that was Games Master UK. 17 sites gave NMH a rating over 75%, including PALGN, Game Informer, Eurogamer, and IGN.

In terms of user reviews on metacritic, NMH is at 7.2, while Haze is at 6.7.

In short, it's not ME that says that NMH is better than Haze, it's the videogame community.

And the fact that it sold better because FPS is more popular is PROVING MY POINT. Gamers will be much more likely to play even a bad game if it's an FPS... and gamers have the audacity to call out the mainstream for playing so-called "casual games"?

so metacritic is legit now? Ok ill be sure to remember that when the reviews for something come in that you dont agree with.

FPSs I see your point, but how is that so different than say...Just Dance? The meta for those games are not that better. and that game is about as mainstream as you can get. Unless metacritic doesnt apply to that.

You have to be clueless to think the WiiU is a Wii. Even my roommate, who's a girl who never plays video games, knew that what I had at my house was the new Wii.

@Rol. Did you consider the DS a useless console due to its dual screens?

i think all they need to do is get rid of the gamepad and stick with wii remote

Should have been called Wii HD

there is literary nothing wrong with WiiU except they launched the platform too early with no compelling software.

Metacritic is a good metric for how the videogame community and the videogame media are reacting to games. It is not a measure of true quality, but it's a measure of quality in the eyes of that particular community. And that particular community judges NMH to be the superior title. And I'm sure that that community also judges Just Dance much lower than the mainstream would assert it deserves.

Personally, I've never played Haze, and while I played NMH, I did so on the Wii. So I have no personal opinion on the quality of either title on the PS3.

For you see, I am not one who appeals to the argument that there is a singular metric of "quality". What I am is a person who feels that each community will judge games for themselves. I think there are some superlative examples of games, games that mostly (or nearly) get unanimous praise from all (not just a particular community), and some that are clearly poor, and that the rest are entirely subjective. And so, I choose a metric for each title that is appropriate to that title. Both Haze and NMH are games designed to appeal to the so-called 'hardcore gamer'. As such, I use the metric most easily applied for that community - metacritic.

Their biggest mistake was squandering their year's head start with a barren software schedule.

I think the way Nintendo advertises the console makes people think that it's just a new tablet controller for the Wii

Improved Wiimote/Nunchuk, yes.

It's a pretty useless console as it is. I don't use the Gamepad for NSMBU and NSLU, I won't use it for Pikmin 3, DKC:TF and SM3DW. So the main benefit of the Wii U is better graphics which is as underwhelming as it can get. All those games might as well have been on the Wii, that way I wouldn't need to own a rubbish console that can't download and install things at the same time.

doesnt it use the wiimote+ which was improved? Should they have made an even newer one?

Its interesting that you bought the console anyway, despite how rubbish it is.

The Wii U supports the original Wiimote as well as the Wiimote+.

The obvious improvement over the current setup would be the removal of the Nunchuk cord and much better motion sensing in the Nunchuk part. I am not in favor of adding an analog stick onto the Wiimote or adding a touch screen (suggestions that have been made by others), because it would overcomplicate things. What I think would be a good adjustment is the replacement of the 1 and 2 buttons with four buttons arranged in the common diamond shape which would benefit games that are played with the Wiimote held sideways while not getting in the way of games that are played one-handed or with the Wiimote/Nunchuk setup. Plus even better motion sensing than in the Wiimote+, yes.

Such a hypothetical Wii successor would also support the original Wiimote and the Wiimote+ as long as the games don't require the capabilities of the new and improved Wiimote/Nunchuk. So just like the actual Wii U does with the original Wiimote; it can be used as long as a game doesn't require Motion Plus.

As for why I bought the Wii U, it's still going to be the only place to play the best games of the eighth generation, despite how rubbish the system is.

yeah that nunchuck could use better motion sensing, but I have to wonder what games would really benefit from that? I cant picture too much genres that would be really benefit from even MORE better motion sensing, but fair enough, one could argue the same about the gamepad itself.
