Forums - Gaming Discussion - Swapping disks - a big deal? Kind of...

binary solo said:
So Xbox360 fans said swapping discs in order to play through a single game was absolutely no problem ans PS3 had zero real advantage by only ever having one disc per game. Now, swapping discs to change from one game to the next is a major hassle and life is over now that XB1 doesn't have it.

Have I summed it up right?

I'm also inclined to go with the assumption that any "flick a switch" claim being made in relation to swapping between games isn't going to work as advertised. Just like family share wasn't going to work as the PR spin was making out. You can go from game to TV or Blu-ray movie no problem because that takes basically no CPU, GPU or RAM, resource. But loading one game at the same time as playing another is a significant CPU, GPU and RAM drain. It basically means a substantial amount of processing resource has to be effectively sitting idle on the off chance you'll want to load a game while you're playing another. That doesn't sound like optimal utilisation of hardware. Either that or the game you're currently playing is going to suffer performance problems while the background loading is happening.

We will see whats what but I dont see why it cant work as advertised.

I did lots of benchmarks and a high end PC game loading uses 500mb of ram including vram/sys ram and that is considering that its rendering frames on the screen. This wouldnt have to worry about much GPU usage... On xbox one games can use 6 cores, 5 gb of ram and 90% of GPU according to MS specifications. That leaves plenty to load games behind the scenes while a game is running.

Look at how Windows 8 behaves when it comes to multitasking of apps...very minimal performance drop with many apps open and running.

When it comes to disk based gaming, on top of drawbacks involving game storage, potential disk damage and disk drives burning out there exists the issue of swapping disks.

People around here seem to be saying how swapping disks isn't that big of a deal. Who in the right mind is so lazy that they can't swap a disk when they want to play a new game?

I happen to disagree...

Below is a scenario showcasing the difference between Xbox One and Xbox 360 when it comes to playing disk based games (before the DRM reversal)

Xbox 360 Xbox One
  1. Accept the invite
  2. stop your current game
  3. Take out the disk
  4. find the other game disk
  5. pop the disk in
  6. Wait for the game to load (my god, the title screen intros!)
  7. Wait for the match to connect
  8. Happy hunting
  1. Accept the invite (continue playing current game until other game loads, and match connects)
  2. (new game starts) Happy Hunting

I find this to be a big difference in terms of time and convinience. People that don't base their lives around gaming but try to squeeze it in when possible should feel the same. When you have 15-20 minutes to play game in a day before life throws something else your way, the time you save and gaming you get by not having to swap disks makes a huge difference.

Xbox One will still work like this for digital games, however retail games are most likely going to function same as Xbox 360.

Just an FYI for those that keep insulting people for being lazy about swapping disks...

I really don't think that's a lot of time. We're talking about 2 minutes. I'd say that's a good trade-off for having vastly more power over what you bought.

Anyways, I think long-term wise we're all going to benefit from staying disc-based... Actually I'd like to return to cartidged based. The cartidge technology is strong enough today but it costs more for them. However, it benefits us because they are WAY more durable. I'd be willing to pay a few bucks more for that. There are things that we're much better in the past.

All gaming systems, consoles/PC, have thier perks... why fight over preferences? I like Coke and you like Pepsi, that's it, let's not fight over which toy we like best cause that's what they are. Is someone's preference in a toy important or is the relationship between you and your neighbor more important? Answer is obvious, but THE most important thing is your relationship with God almighty. God Bless you in Jesus's name.

I can communicate without talking... I can send a loved one money without actually sending money... and I can commit theft without the product disappearing, the point of theft is the point of theft not one of it's possible symptoms which is the product dissappearing. The thief wants to gain something without paying for it, that's the point of theft, the thief doesn't have to care or anybody else has to care if the product dissappears. The product dissappearing is just a possible symptom of theft. Gifts are sacrfices, in order to give a gift, it has to be a genuine sacrfice/gift, meaning a copy of the game isn't still in your PC. Piracy is theft and/or being a culprit of theft.

Id campaign for cartriges to make a return. That would be ballin'...

Otherwise i see digital beneficial for the exact reasons you described. More power over what I bought... Its mine to keep and use forever with no risk of it getting lost or damaged, I can be transrered anywhere its playable without much fuss and its ready to be consumed and used any time hardware is available.

Only place digital stumbles is resale and DRM requirements. I fully understand why this is a dealbreaker for some people...but for some, its not that big of a deal. and 2 minutes of extra game time in a 15 minute gaming session along with a slew of other benefits makes digital worth it.

Disc swapping is a pain when you are not use to doing it. I hate playing on last gen console for that reason. If it wasn't for Wii U offering multi tasking and swapping games without swapping discs I wouldn't own one now..

However Sony is our Lord and Master and they can do no wrong. All hail our perfect Master Sony. No negative comments will be allowed about Sony no matter if true or relevant.

We're not on the same page.

I'm speaking about power differently. Like, me being able to make back ups... not being reliant on loging online... or possibly risking my game's library to a server 100's of miles away from me, maybe. Or getting my account hacked.

Your talking about power more on a convinience focused way. Yeah sure it would be nice and easy to switch games (JUST A BIT) quicker. But, I'd prefer a better foothold of both my freedom AND security.

I really think its better for everyone.

Didnt have a problem during the PS1 era when games could have 4 discs.. so I wont have a problem now...

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

And shepherds we shall be,

For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti. -----The Boondock Saints

How to blow something out of proportion... shoving it down our throat style.

Why is this even relevant at all? Are you guys so lazy that you can't even handle a stupid disc?

Isn't it obvious what the solution is?

MS needs to a produce a disc reader attachment that can hold many CDs. Kinda like those stereo systems we saw in the late 90s.
