Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Is the Wii U this Generations Dreamcast?

Right now? It is worst than Dreamcast. But that will change in December.

I think the money 3DS makes will save the Wii U. Also, by the time Dreamcast came out, Sega lost tons of money on Sega CD, 32X and Saturn. The Wii U might have the same fate but i don't think it is too likely

Xbox One, PS4 and Switch (+ Many Retro Consoles)

Prediction: Switch will sell better than Wii U Lifetime Sales by Jan 1st 2018

Wii U will be fine, the system sold ~3.5-4.0 mil despite an extremely weak software support by Nintendo and 3rd parties. Nintendo has hinted at a relaunch this coming holiday season just in time for Super Mario 3D world. If Nintendo is smart it would cut the price and unify the SKU to only the 32GB with pre-installed NintendoLand for $299.99 giving extra value to the system. I have a feeling MS will be dropping the X1's price to $400 with no game to match what PS4 is offering. Regardless, Nintendo has chosen not to compete with those systems and be a supplementary system to those consoles as it was with the Wii and GCN. I see the system selling ~10-12 mil units on their annual fiscal report ending March 2014. With the X1 and PS4 surpassing or matching those sales by the same time period if not soon after that date. Still might end up with 45-50mil units sold in 5-6 year span, enough to sustain software support by 1st & 2nd party software, along with Indies and some 3rd party as well.

I wish Nintendo would have made a kind of GC2 as powerful as PS4-One, with a better graphics-third party support.

I'd want to see a Zelda with these graphics...

Well the Wii U is a little more powerful than the current-gen but not as powerful as PS4/X1.  I would put the power diff similar to 3DS vs PSV to as much as  DC vs the original Xbox!!!  Still far from the Wii vs PS360 situation, so as long as it has compelling software the system will be fine.  At least we get their games in HD this time right?

Let me just say that I loved the DreamcastTh. The system was awesome with its great controller, the amazing VMU, and the excellent games. The Dreamcast was a very innovative system, with its controls, memory card, and internet connection. The Wii U seems to be trying similar things although the level of innovation is not quite what we had hoped for.

Unfortunately, it also looks like a system caught between generations. It is more powerful than the Wii, 360 and PS3 but not even close to the Xbox One or PS4. However, just like the Wii it has great games. Unfortunately, most of these games have to come from Nintendo since 3rd party support on the system has been very lackluster. This is fairly similar to what happened to the Dreamcast.

If you are looking for a second system buy the Wii U and do not let it go the way of the Dreamcast.

YES

Because of fanboys, but mainly Nintendo.

For opposed reasons to the Dreamcast

In 5-6 years when they do make Zelda look like that. You'll be asking for these graphics.

No. Nintendo is in a completely different situation compared to Sega during the Dreamcast. Anyone who tries to relate the Wii U to the Dreamcast obviously do not know what the they are talking about.

Pretty much this.

One can draw some tentative parallels but try hard enough and you can do that between any two systems.

Wii U won't go the same way cause Nintendo has a lot more financial ressources then SEGA, will it sell as much as the Wii? No, nobody ever thought that, but it will be more then the N64.

it certainly MAY sell more than the wii. too soon to say it won't.

Not sure if I've misunderstood you here...are you seriously suggesting that the PS4 and One are going to have an installed userbase between 10 and 12m before the end of the financial year..? There's absolutely no chance of that happening, they won't be able to manufacture and ship that many let alone sell them.

10-12m is very doable by 31st March 2015 but there's no way that's possible next year.
