Nintendo just came from their most successful Generation ever. 2 Consoles within the top 4 of best selling Video Game Hardware(DS, Wii). Sega actually never made profit (except genesis).

Nintendo made always profit since 1985 (except 2012 or 2011, don't remember correctly now) What makes you think that they will end like SEGA. SEGA f****ed it up like 10 times before going under

I didn't mean Nintendo would end up like Sega due to the Dreamcast failure, I meant that a Wii U failure would be similar to the failure of the Saturn outside of Japan, where they rushed to put out the Dreamcast before the other consoles to make up lost ground. Nintendo hasn't done it before in the home consoles but if they don't start gaining ground within 2 years of the its launch and the PS4 or/and the Xbox One do then the expectation and demand will be for a new home console, because Nintendo doesn't really support money pits for long.

The Gamecube (while not a money pit) was their lowest selling consoel and they held onto it the entire generation.  Why assume they would jump short this time?

Development of HD games and network services, means the cost of supporting a losing console will be more costly in today's market then it was during the GC/PS2/Xbox era. Not to mention the fact is that the GC had decent 3rd party support in the early years that could help subsidize the system, the Wii U doesn't even have that luxury or the ability to get ports even as easy as the GC with its tiny discs could do with the PS2/Xbox.

I am not in the least worried about the Wii U, but I'm willing to take the long view. This is going to be a long generation, and almost everything about the Wii U fits into an entertainment center. In fact, between the low price and a mostly exclusive library, THE WII U NATURALLY COMPLEMENTS ANOTHER CONSOLE, RATHER THAN COMPETING WITH IT.

That's a genius niche for a long cycle.

Once the PS4 and the XBone cool off from the launches and gamers figure this out (circa 2015) the Wii U will start to sell like wildfire. Especially if it gets a price-cut and titles like Zelda and X are there.

Agreed.  I personally go for Nintedo systems first and supplement it with Microsoft/Sega systems for multi-plat games.  One would be foolish to dismiss the Wii U and miss out on great software on or coming to the system ie Bayonetta2, X, Mario Kart 8, Mario 3D World, Wonderful 101,  ZombieU,  NSMBWiiU, and host of upcoming indie games on the eShop.

This isn't even a matter of the games, even, but pure functionality. The Wii U lets you have a web browser open, Youtube, whatever, and you can do it while gaming. And unlike the XBone, it doesn't need to waste TV screen space or rely on voice commands (which statistically most users find annoying to use) to do it.

The Wii U + Any Console is a fantastic combination on paper. It's just the Wii U needs a price drop and some titles to make it happen.

Wii U won't go the same way cause Nintendo has a lot more financial ressources then SEGA, will it sell as much as the Wii? No, nobody ever thought that, but it will be more then the N64.

Actually, doing as well as the N64 is probably the goal of the Wii U at this point. The N64 at least while 2nd place by a long shot, was still second place, had a strong following in North America along with setting the stage for the explosion of local multiplayer that the Xbox would later capitalize on via Halo and other games.

The Wii U needs to develop a niche like that in order to survive, the Wii U had it for a few years in motion controls before Microsoft and Sony stepped in with their options and 3rd parties began to leave the Wii outside of PSP or lesser PS2 ports. The Wii U is starting at a disadvantage because Sony is offering conectivity with the Vita and Microsoft with certain tablets, meaning the unique edge of the Wii U gamepad won't be special for long if at all should it ever gain traction among the audience. Nintendo needs to have the games capable of building or nurturing some sort of significant market because as it is as bad as people say the N64 and GC performed the Wii U may do worst, This won't really hurt Nintendo the way the Dreamcast's failure did Sega but it is akin to Saturn where it may force a Dreamcast type mid generation rushed console.

upps, failure at my part, thought you meant the console after wii u will be rushed :D

I just hope that Nintendo does not pull the system before the end of the console cycle like Sega did with the Dreamcast.

Of course like many of you have stated Nintendo is in a much better financial place because of the Wii and the handheld success.

Also would like to see more new IPs even if I do love Mario, Zelda and the rest of the crew.

No. Nintendo is in a completely different situation compared to Sega during the Dreamcast. Anyone who tries to relate the Wii U to the Dreamcast obviously do not know what the they are talking about.

Wii U is this generation's PS2, not Dreamcast.

I'm a nintendo fan, but don't think the Wii could be like the PS2. Why do you say that?
