Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Is the Wii U this Generations Dreamcast?

No, but it wouldnt be bad if it was since the DC had an impressive library of great games.

Nintendo's position now can't be compared with SEGA's then.

Nonsense. Nintendo has enough money in the bank to have 2 more failing systems. SEGA didnt.

O.o Well spotted. Dunno how i missed that. Apologies IsawYoshi. Nevermind that comment. ;)

Not really. I expect sales to be pretty mediocre, even when the big titles come out, and I don't see the system having any degree of third-party support when the few multi-plats predictably flat-line this fall. So in that sense, it is similar, but Nintendo has enough invested in the system that they'll just ride it out.

In the end, the system will persevere, but I expect it to have a sobering effect on their bottom line.

I believe in honesty, civility, generosity, practicality, and impartiality.

I think its more GameCube than Dreamcast, even though right now it's selling less than the GameCube.

Wii U won't go the same way cause Nintendo has a lot more financial ressources then SEGA, will it sell as much as the Wii? No, nobody ever thought that, but it will be more then the N64.

Actually, doing as well as the N64 is probably the goal of the Wii U at this point. The N64 at least while 2nd place by a long shot, was still second place, had a strong following in North America along with setting the stage for the explosion of local multiplayer that the Xbox would later capitalize on via Halo and other games.

The Wii U needs to develop a niche like that in order to survive, the Wii U had it for a few years in motion controls before Microsoft and Sony stepped in with their options and 3rd parties began to leave the Wii outside of PSP or lesser PS2 ports. The Wii U is starting at a disadvantage because Sony is offering conectivity with the Vita and Microsoft with certain tablets, meaning the unique edge of the Wii U gamepad won't be special for long if at all should it ever gain traction among the audience. Nintendo needs to have the games capable of building or nurturing some sort of significant market because as it is as bad as people say the N64 and GC performed the Wii U may do worst, This won't really hurt Nintendo the way the Dreamcast's failure did Sega but it is akin to Saturn where it may force a Dreamcast type mid generation rushed console.

Nintendo just came from their most successful Generation ever. 2 Consoles within the top 4 of best selling Video Game Hardware(DS, Wii). Sega actually never made profit (except genesis).

Nintendo made always profit since 1985 (except 2012 or 2011, don't remember correctly now) What makes you think that they will end like SEGA. SEGA f****ed it up like 10 times before going under

I didn't mean Nintendo would end up like Sega due to the Dreamcast failure, I meant that a Wii U failure would be similar to the failure of the Saturn outside of Japan, where they rushed to put out the Dreamcast before the other consoles to make up lost ground. Nintendo hasn't done it before in the home consoles but if they don't start gaining ground within 2 years of the its launch and the PS4 or/and the Xbox One do then the expectation and demand will be for a new home console, because Nintendo doesn't really support money pits for long.

Similarities? Yes

The same outcome? Bloody hell no

It just won't get the sales it might deserve...

And proud member of the Mega Mario Movement!

Let's hope it isn't. The system is not my taste but still the video-gaming-world would be way worse without Nintendo-games. They still have the best first-party-games which appeal to gamers across all ages and have the best video-gaming-character ever, even one of the best in general. Almost everybody knows Mario, Luigi, Link and Zelda. Something MS and Nintendo are missing a little bit. Master chief to me is nice but can't stand the comparison to Mario and Sony still has to find a mascot. PS Allstars showed they are lacking in this category.

The Gamecube (while not a money pit) was their lowest selling consoel and they held onto it the entire generation.  Why assume they would jump short this time?

The rEVOLution is not being televised

Nice. We are back to giving attention to Wii U now. Thank you MS.
