Forums - Sales Discussion - EAs Wii exclusives--The right idea?

After letting Ubisoft win Xmas 1 with Red Steel and Rayman Raving Rabbids, EA are rolling out Wii support.

They are not a company known for their exclusive titles, but so far they have announced no less than 3 exclusive Wii titles, all of them likely slated for the holidays.

All three titles (MySims, Boogie and EA Playground, for anyone wondering) are highly stylized and are at least trying to make interesting use of the Wiimote and capture the so-called "casual" audience.

They also recently announced that NBA Live will be coming to Wii this year, as well as a delayed port of the Sims 2: Pets.

In total, EA has 14 games either already released or formally announced for Wii. They are:

Is EA on the right track to becoming the #1 third party publisher on Wii?

"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.

I think EA will end up being the best selling third party publisher on the Wii. For one thing, they are developing exclusives for the Wii that have the potential to appeal to people across the spectrum of age, sex, and nationality. Another thing is that their current franchises appeal to many casual gamers, as well as hard core gamers(though that may not be popular to say). Even EA's ports seem to be a step above the usual. I had actually boycotted EA for a while now(very disgruntled over the NFL thing), but just couldn't resist The Godfather for the Wii after hearing so many good things about it. I've really enjoyed what little I have got to play of it and have to give a tip of the hat to them.

I think they are off to a good start and will eclipse Ubi in sales this year. Madden sold well and pretty steadily on the Wii, and it looks like Tiger Woods is off to a strong start as well. There is potential for even more sells when online modes are added to these games(though the online will be weaker and more frustrating than XBL admittedly). The lack of online has kept me from buying either game on the Wii, but I'm excited about the upcoming editions. I'm also looking forward to a Harry Potter game for the first ever, it may just be something special on the Wii. Basically my point is I am looking into these franchises for either the first time, or the first time in a while because of their potential on the Wii and EA's relative amounts of care they are putting into the titles. I'm sure I won't be the only one to start changing his tune on EA over time. I'm also curious to see how SSX Blur sells in the long-run after a good price drop...

"I feel like I could take on the whole Empire myself."

It's a shame Godfather isn't doing better, if they'd advertised that as much and as well as they did Tiger Woods it'd be a hit.

I really appreciate that EA announces exclusive games, this is far better than their annual releases of updated games.

EA's plans are good, and they're no doubt what we'll see more of. No need to waste a bunch of money on high budget titles. Games that take advantage of the Wii's controller, mini games, and an emphasis on younger gamers is right where the Wii is at, and then just fill in the holes with ports of their most mass market franchises.

Shane, since when in the hell is 30-40 year olds considered "younger gamers"?

Please drop the typical age stereotyping of anything "Nintendo" based, it's baseless crap and you know it.

Nobody is crazy enough to accuse me of being sane.

Sims games (and Animal Crossing for that matter) have been one of the few games where adult women represent the majority of people playing them.

Boogie, Playground, and MySims are for people in their 30s-40s? When the stereotype is ready to be dropped, it will be. Few publishers seem willing to let it go, and Nintendo's made way too much money off it to do so themselves. They may be attempting to deemphasize it to an extent, but they know where their sweet spot is. They know who's going to buy Pokemon no matter how many rainbows it goes through. Would Disney drop Mickey Mouse, Hannah Montana, and High School Musical because a Miramax film performed well? I will agree that Sims has a heavy female influence, though I disagree it's mostly adults. Teenage girls are the core Sims audience, with early 20s as a best case scenario.

Not sure if anyone else is, but Im really looking forward to the Harry Potter Wii title. If this is executed properly (i.e. no crap last the last few HP games), it could be a massive game. Gesture based spell casting should be awesome, and might actually work properly as well. And there should be a lot of HP hype around, with the last book out soon (and ending the series).

amen, why cant more just accept it?

a G rated movie or a E rated game can be succesfull with all demographics but a R rated or M rated cant, the possible audience is many times bigger so why not make your product for everyone.
