Forums - Gaming Discussion - So can we finally admit that the "cloud" was PR play now that Xbox doesn't require online?

Tagged games:

I'm fairly sure that games that use "the cloud" are going to require that online connection still. Titanfall is no doubt most likely going to be an online game.

No the cloud will work as before.

Before the change you didn't have to be online while playing a game, which means that you couldn't profit from the cloud.
Nothing changed.

Cloud is only helpful in online modes (bigger maps, more players, online stats tracking, better performance etc.) and it's perfectly possible that there are cloud only games that require you to be online (a few multiplayer centric XBLA games already need you to be connected to the internet before you can even start them)

Exactly.

This is exactly it, the 'cloud' will work exactly as they have planned for it to work.

Save your breath mate. This has been argued nearly as many times as there has been Amazon threads!

what did change? cloud based games will still use the cloud and games which didn't use the cloud or use it like forza will still work like before. because a needed 24 hours check was also not a permanent connection.

Simcity 2.0

Now that M$ isn't requiring the online, what about cloud-based games? Obviously they were lies and PR if they can still be played now on Xbone? I expect people to hack the game's code like Simcity and expose this once the games launch.

First, "Cloud" is used in several ways.

#1.  Remote Storage.  Remote storage provides access to your personal profile anywhere, game saves, and game library.  This really wasn't any different from the Xbox 360, just given a new coat of paint.  The major difference is that retail-based, disc games will not be available to you online.  So, I buy a game via a retail out, install it to my Xbox One, then go to a friends without the disc, I won't be able to play the game.  I have to have the disc.  Otherwise, all my downloaded games, including any DLC, will be available for me to download and play on any Xbox One.

#2.  Distributed Computing.  This won't change because of today's announcements.  Any games that use the cloud will still use it if the console is connected, if not it won't.  Consoles that are connected will have enhanced gameplay and features.

#3.  Server-based Online Multiplayer and Persistent Online Gaming worlds.  Neither of these will change because of today's announcements.  Since these would require an onine connection if you don't have one you won't be able to play the game in the online mode.  If you do, you will.

Yes, this was the final evidence.

It's like a house of cards, it's all falling apart. Now everyone knows Microsoft was lying and cheating and this will haunt them for the rest of the generation.

I told you this was the beginning of the end. The Xbos brand will never recover from this.

I doubt that. People have already forgotten and forgiven. They are posting pictures of them pre ordering Xbone all over the internet.

OT: The cloud part would still work in games like Titan Fall as they are hybrid or single player and multiplayer. Single Player only games would not require cloud integration it seems.

Yep.  Online-only games like Destiny and Titanfall (as well as online multiplayer in other games) can still benefit from whatever benefits the cloud can provide.

Sony has said that they can do this, too, but if I had to guess I'd say that Microsoft is better prepared for this.  Considering how much they've been talking about the power of their cloud, they've probably designed the X1 around it to make sure it is as easily accessible to developers as possible.

The cloud processing can still be used. Except it will only be useful for something off screen. It will have too much lag for anything on screen. And the data will be too slow unless there is some brilliant compression being used.

A game like skyrim will have a fully living world that the AI is always working even when you are exploring dungeons and such. It will never be used to enhance graphics.

Some people are over hyping it. And then others are flat out saying it wont work. It will be somewhere in the middle.

If they made it so I could use my PC over LAN as a form of cloud processing that would be cool. All of the benefits with no lag. Pity that will probably never happen. Too much money required to build a good pc along with buying the xbone.

what exactly is different for singleplayer or multiplayer games as it was 5 hours ago for xbox one when we talk about the cloud? i really wonder what you think changed.
