The Last of Us >100k next week??

Nah I say most probably the other way around The Last of Us <100k.

Japanese gamers just do not embrace anything the is not japanese. No matter the quality.

I see you didn't pay a whole lot of attention to Japanese sales figures over this generation.

I'm willing to listen. Show me hard proof, show me a pattern and I will change my stance on the matter

Uncharted 3 launched in Japan with ~120k units.

Yeah, I'm not saying a non Japanese game cannot open higher than 100k, I just said TLoU won't in my opinion.

And well the second sentence is still valid, since U3 only sold 200k there LTD. It's peanuts in the overall sales of this game. There are games that sold even more, but it's always a small fraction of the overall sales: GTA IV sold 550k in Japan, that's big, but not anymore when the game sold 20m on consoles.

More examples: You have LBP selling 120k there, from a game that cannot be labeled culturally.

Ratchet & Clank ToD: 80k

God of War 3: 120k from aprox. 5m, compared to 180k sold DMCs, published by Capcom (GoW also way more critically acclaimed)

Resident Evil 6 sold here 650k first week, a game that was slammed for being very "westernised", cattering to the CoD gamer, even Capcom themselves said that, so Japanese gamers should ignore it. But they didn't, cause it's a japanese game. It also got mixed reviews. TLoU reviews are stellar. First week sales will be comparable, aprox 1,3m. And we'll be seing less than 1/6th of the sales.

But that 550k is more than most games. The Japanese market is much smaller than the US market, and getting 6 figures is impressive. A title breaking half a million is very good, especially for a Western IP. Just a little over 100 titles break 100k in a year.

Go and look back at sales of the games, and you'll see that good Western games sitll do well. This is despite the fact that they rarely feature good localizations and there is very little if any marketing for the game (remind anyone of a common trait with Japanese games in the West). You'll also find that only ~125 games even break 100k in a year.

You can also see that since Square has taken over the localization of Call of Duty in Japan, they've done well. Square will do a good job at it and do far more with marketing than previous entries (BLOPS1, 2, and MW3 have all outsold Dynasty Warriors 6 and 7, Tales of Graces f, Tales of Xillia 2, DMC4, and hundreds of Japanese centric titles).

Ok since you bring up Square as doing a good job localising and publishing in Japan. Some recent games published by SE, developed by non-japanese developers (on PS3, bringing up X360 numbers in Japan would be unfair), every single one of them hold over 80 meta on PS3, some even high-80s:

-Tomb Raider: 60k (this one is 2 months on market, we can assume it may sell a bit more lifetime)

-Sleeping Dogs: 50k

-Just Cause 2: 60k

-Deus Ex HR: 70k

-Hitman Absolution 60k

Quote tree length shortened - Conegamer.

So it is happening...PS4 preorder.

Greatness Awaits!

Great to see Vita above 10k without any major titles.

And what the hell happened? These threads used to get so many replies.

Shame on all of you!!

None of those are very big titles and all are not very popular genres. Third person shooters never all that big, and despite that, none of them bombed completely. Especially considering that most of these didn't sell all that well in other territories. Deux Ex only did 400k in America....

I am OUTLAWING long quote trees from this point on in the thread - Kresnik.

(But seriously, try to keep them in check guys)

In my opinion they are pretty big, only Sleeping Dogs didn't manage to sell a million copies. Of course on PS3 alone, if we consider X360 versions, the gap only widens, cause Japan barely bought X360 versions of those games.
I listed a few PS3 exclusives in wide variety of genres, all of which sold very poorly.

Deus Ex did only 400k in America on PS3, it did another 630k on the 360, Japan added 20k on other platform.

What you consider bombing then? I think every single one of these games bombed in Japan.
