Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Remember Netflix PR disaster

It was the end. NetFlix stock plunged from nearly $300 per share to about $50.  Remind you of anything. This is because NetFlix doubled down on streaming and increased the cost of renting physical discs.

Similiar and yes slightly different to what MS is doing.  I for one and totally excited on the doubling down on digital. I look forward to pre-ordering a game and have it download to my Xbox One and then at 12:01AM when the game launches it being already installed and ready to go. Remember the download can be done in advance of the actual release and the game just not be able to run until the launch date. I look forward to my son away at school to use all the games we have at home and no arguments about purchasing multiple copies, about what games he takes to school and what stays home for his brothers and I to play, etc. etc.

To add with all the hub bub about this the last month take a look at Wall Street.  MSFT stock has basically performed exactly the same as the rest of the market and basically the same as Sony, Google and Apple.

Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

No it isn't but...

Digital download game sharing with friends/family - exclusive on Xbox one

Unlimited digital download installs on as many consoles as you wish - exclusive on Xbox one

Digital download game trading with friends - exclusive on Xbox one

+ many more benefits to the interface and experience we  don't know about yet.

Yeah PS4 will do digital as well in a "me too" kind of way.  I really struggle to understand how people think that a company that is financially struggling and has 1/10th the digital resources of Microsoft will provide a comparable digital experience. Not to mention compete on the operating system and file system side, with eqaully good multitasking, apps, features etc...as something running Windows NT kernel.

Those two are also on PS3 and will likely be carried over onto PS3 as well.

Will be interesting how you can trade digital games as I haven't read anything about it.

Digital "game sharing" on PS3 involves giving your gamertag to someone else, and having them download the game. Once they do this they can play the game using their gamer ID but the game is tied to the actual console hardware. This can only be done 2 times... Then you have to deal with de-activations. God forbid your console bricks and you can't deactivate. Youc ant share a game anymore.

Also unlimited digital downloads on consoles isn't possible. It was 5 consoles at a time, but its been changed to 2 at a time...

@bolded. PS3 says hi

@ underlined- to bad those unlimted people who downloaded it cant actually PLAY the game. epic FAIL. the number of players who actually can play it are restricted.

@italic - welcome to PS4, where you can let your friends stream your game, join in with you, or just watch. or... or... you can just give them the game!! oh boy i do love having choices!! see, choices are fun!!.

PS4 will do the digital downloads in the "me too" kind of way? care to actually speak wih some logic? at the rest of the paragraph. just because you CANT understand how somebody else is doing something that microsoft can doesnt mean its impossible. care to explain to me how sony managed to create a console that can do more than the xbox one, is more powerfull and cheaper at the same time?

First part about the console bricking used to be true, but nowadays you can deactivate all your consoles from their website.  I've had to do it a few times myself.  Then you can activate whatever consoles you want.  There's some time restriction on it like you can only do it once a month or so, but if you have consoles bricking that often you probably need to stop playing them in the bathtub or whatever you're doing.

You can download the game on as many consoles as you want, they just can't be used on those consoles, which is the same as XBone, but with different numbers of how many people can use it.

...

for that reason, XBOX ONE will sell well only in USA.

1. PS3 doesn't say hi. Ps3 game sharing is inconvinient at best and can be done on 2 consoles at a time. I'm not even sure if its technically legal. You are given the right to install the game twice but most likely the fineprint says it needs to be someone living in your household or something similar.  Tying digital downloads to hardware is seriously ancient and if they are not doing internet checks, it looks like this will continue for PS4.

Also

http://www.polygon.com/2013/6/14/4426656/publishers-bringing-xbox-one-like-limitations-to-ps4-would-be

"Of course, the PlayStation 3 doesn't allow the sale or trade of downloaded titles. When asked if Sony's leniency will be extend to the digital realm, Rohde replied, "We're not talking about any sort of digital trading or loaning policies right now. To us, that [physical media] part of it was just so clear. The digital part of DRM will be debated and evolved forever. It really will."

2. I am not talking about unlimited digital installs for the sake of game shraing. I am talking about having your games follow you around on many consoles. We've reached the X86 era of gaming with digital ecosystems...I see us downloading these games on different hardware throughout many generations to come. Sony and Microsoft can't afford to reboot their consoles in 7 years. Apple and Android will murder them if they do... They will most likley murder then regardless actually.

I didn't know about the website thing...I figured you had to call sony support. Fair enough... Still why am I deactivating things on a timed basis and keeping track who has my game, when I have a great internet connection and can verify in that manner.

As far as unlimited downloads, I see your point as well. So I can install a game on 3 consoles I may own, sisters console and a few friends...and then using the website I can switch the rights to the console I may want to use to play my game... If I'm visiting my sister, I can flip the switch there. If I'm at friends house, I can deactivate the sister and select my friends console. Still kind of crumbesome and it falls appart if its time restricted.
