Sony's Handheld Wii?

Ever since Sony entered the system business, they have completely dominated in terms of console sales. The PS & PS2 became the first 2 home systems ever to reach 100 Million sold, easily winning their respective gens. Everybody including Sony thought that the PS3 would continue the PS domination...

Then came the Wii. Nintendo released the Wii and dominated the competition, breaking sales records in the process. In the end, PS3 managed to catch up and is steadily closing the gap each week. Overall, Wii still won the gen. (As of now)

In a similar way, Nintendo has completely dominated the HH market. It had virtually no competition whats so ever until PSP released. I remember reading that Sony would potentially dominate the HH space too...obviously that didn't happen and the DS went on to become the best selling HH of all time by a big gap.

The question is, will Sony ever pull a Wii and beat Nintendo with a Handheld? Can PS4 help sell Vita so that it begins to outsell the 3DS just like PS3 slowly cought up to Wii in the longrun?

My thought is "No" because I think 3DS will easily outsell the Vita worse than DS beat PSP. I can't help but think the Vita will be Sony's last HH system. With that said, Sony might try to sell the Vita for a long time and slowly get it to respectable sales. We need games first though!

Nope, Ninty's got that locked down.

It could happen, I just doubt it. There's more competition there now than ever.

Sony's philosophy for handheld games is holding them back. Their promising "console gaming on the go" proved that. Unless the company gets new ideas or leadership, their not going to threaten Nintendo's handhelds anytime soon.

Love and tolerate.

As Salanx has said, Sony approach with the Vita is exactly why it's not doing so well. Rather than making games tailored for a handheld, their making games for a wannabe home console.

No. Sony really doesn't seem to know how to handle the Hand-Held market. They treat it, basically, as a second hand to their console counterparts. Nintendo know what works for the HandHeld market and they continually drive that forward.

There are several other reasons why this won't happen, but that's the biggest. Nintendo knows what they are doing.

No because (I know kids still get their hand on the Sony consoles), but as a mass market, the PS3 is marketed for young adults which sort of shorten it's new audience. Nintendo crater to all ages which is to sell more.

Don’t follow the hype, follow the games

Here a little quote I want for those to keep memorize in your head for this coming next gen.

So you guys think if Nintendo made a HH as powerful as Vita, it would do bad?

No, but if Nintendo develop more games like Metroid Prime and Twilight Princess, and abandoned the casual stuff, their HH would not do as well.

Lifetime Sales Prediction - 6/29/2013
Wii U - 38 million
XBOX One - 88 million
Playstation 4 - 145 million

Nintendo's franchises just fit better on a HH too don't you think? Sony making games like Gravity Rush and LBP show that they are attempting to make more HH-like games.
