Forums - Gaming Discussion - Looks like Sony built PS4 to compete the Xbox 360, only with better graphics/specs

That's fine. Choice is good...But are you are telling me that they are going to match Microsoft with a digital ecosystem as well as keep retail disk based gaming alive and take care of every man, woman and child and leave no one behind. All this while keeping the same or better user experience?

It isn't their responsibility or necessarily even their prerogative to keep retail alive. They are simply giving people a choice because they see that people value that choice. And yet they have also been pushing far harder than MS this generation to make going digital an attractive option.

It may be that MS is not just full of hubris as console companies tend to be on their third outing and making a naked power grab to try to control the living room the way they've always dreamed of doing. Maybe they really do have this brilliant vision you seem to think they do. But it's quite telling that they have been utterly incapable of articulating that vision in a way that people find at all appealing.

And every title in PS4 will be available day one for digital and retail.

Sony give you choice.

And that I won't have a situation like I did last night where I bought the Last of Us on PSN and it took 30 minutes to download and 7 HOURS to install?

But yeah, slow disk loading retail games will still be there...thats a plus right?

And ya the fuck right, theres no way in hell you own a ps3 and just purchased TLOU, otherwise you wouldnt be junking up these boards the way you are, you'd be too busy enjoying that masterpiece of a game.  And if by some slim chance you actually do, you'd be better served turning off your computer and start playing the best game this gen.

There not bitching about psn+ because they are hypocrites and fanboys, always have been and always will be. They used live as a way to shit on Xbox fans and rile them up, now that Sony has it they look stupid and are in full damage control. Pretty Simple

I own a Xbox 360 and have a Live Account.  I dont mind paying for the multiplayer gaming and cross game chat....it is worth is since they provide servers and such. I DONT want to pay to use my Netflix account or my Prime account....hence I have 2 - PS3 tied to TV's that are primarily for video viewing.  PS+ at least gives you free games.

I dont like Xbox Live becuse the 360 is pretty much useless with out a Gold account.  To add injury to insult the stupid arse MS points made it worse.  At least they are FINALLY fixing that BS.

Uhm, both Sony and MS are doing the same old same old, MS are simply throwing in a lot more restrictions and regulations while the PS4 throws in more gimmicks.

They both seem kind of... boring to me.

Well, at least Sony competes with actual consoles, not tv box

If the past week is anything to go by it looks like that trail MS is blazing leads right out of the console business.

I disagree... When Apple, Android devices and Microsoft ecosystems are running the digital gaming landscape 5 years from now and Sony is yelling "hey guys, we do digital too if you'd like"...we will see who made the right bet.

Lol, more like Apple and Android will be running the digital landscape while Microsoft is playing catchup to them, as usual. Sony can grab up the console market again and start building themselves a nice digital ecosystem in the meantime. Microsoft is good at screwing up their own products.

Atto Suggests...:

Book - Malazan Book of the Fallen series

Game - Metro Last Light

TV - Deadwood

Music - Forest Swords

Emulating the 360 is still a better decision than Microsoft emulating the PS3 (media box for $500 that has a value of thousands of dollars).

The PS4 is still the PS3 at heart except lacking the core. Nothing has really changed outside of PSN Plus.

I was on vacation with no internet access for a week and am watching these e3 conferences and their fallout for the first time today, so forgive me with chiming in a bit late.

In terms of the e3 presentations and what was shown:

What has Sony added to the new console aside beefing up the specs? Sony's console strategy is seriously starting to lag at this point and time. For 3 generations now they keep doing the same things console after console.. just beef up the specs and provide a current staus quo and boom, they’re done. Whilst Microsoft has been the trailblazer, taking risks and bringing new things to the console market. This forces Sony to have to patch things on the go in order to compete and always remain a step behind(or several steps).

When Microsoft introduced standardized multiplayer gaming on consoles and started charging for Xbox Live Gold, people criticized it, claiming it will fail. But now Sony is going by the same route and charging money for PSN+ in order for multiplayer. How are gamers and media not bitching about this btw?

Then again when Microsoft Introduced Xbox live arcade and XNA for indie developers, people said it will fail... but now Sony is grabbing Indie developers any way they can. Consistently Sony incompetence and lack of foresight means they have to always play catch up and are behind.

We are again seeing something new on home consoles from Microsoft...cloud computing, digital gaming library, digital game sharing, HDMI passthrough and possibly many more features to come...which everyone on the internetz is claiming will fail. All while the greatest strengths for the competition are all based on the current gaming standards. Hmm...

They say that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over while expecting a different outcome.

Digital library and digital game sharing has been long established on the PlayStation brand. This isn't anything new. When the ps3 first started out it was shared between 5 ps3 it's been cut back to 2, wanna know why? Because it was being abused to all hell and back. And you can expect MS to cut it complete or dial it back. Plus cloud computing is already supported, but they know it's pretty limited right now. Sony knows this, hell MS knows this but they need to seem like they are in a better position. Which they aren’t.

What Sony did bring to the table is all the streaming features. Watching your friends play and online couch co op. meaning I can play a single player game from the other side of the county with my friends back home in FL. That’s pretty Fucking cool and the real innovation. They are also bring PSN outside of the PlayStation and allowing users to keep up with what’s going on even if they are way from the ps4.

looking at your sig i see you are a PC gamer, can i ask, what has PC gaming brought new to the gaming industry? if PS4 and X1 seem boring because they do the same thing, then what new things did PC as a platform bring to gaming? why doesnt PC gaming seem boring?

to make it clear, im genuinly interested in your response, not trying to pick a fight or argue or downplay PC gaming (as i am a PC gamer as well)

-Better graphics.
-Reportedly the best controller of any game system.
-live game streaming/viewing.
-Gaikai.
- Strong support for F2P at launch.
-Optional PS eye (watch the demos if you ain't seen them).

They've essentially improved everything without forcing any gimmicks on the user.
