That's actually a really neat feature. My TV only has two HDMI ports so this is definitely helpful.

Convenience, abeit a small one.
And you would need 2 controllers in order to control that setup. I think it is better to connect the 360 to the TV directly.
I guess this could be "nice" if your TV only has 1 input.

What if I get the HDMI out and loop it back into the HDMI in on the same console? Will I create a black hole or some kind of video paradox and destroy the universe?

You won't see it because you block your hdmi-out-port :)
