In truth there is nothing to see here. Its pretty much par for the course on both counts, Miyamoto says something deep yet cryptic and Jaffe gives a chuckle and lashes out. Really I don't care if they become pen pals or butt buddies, so long as they both keep making games for me to play

Deep yet cryptic? What he actually said was "Why put guns on cars? Don't cars crash into each other."

I'm struggling to find the hidden meaning there. Maybe it is only apparent to Nintendo acolytes.

I'm pretty sure that someone whose most famous creation is an Italian plumber with a moustache that battles mutant turtles to rescue a princess isn't someone that imbues his work with profound messages.

@ ZenfoldorVGI

Jaffe didn't apologise. He told people who misconstrued his comments to go fuck themselves (as he rightly should).

@ weezy )

ehh.. "look at that extremist , he is the normal PS3 owner" .. sorry , but you are gravely mistaken and your mistake is , that you only pay attention to those , who fit your own believe of what a ps3-owner is

Yeah Miyamoto is holy, and jaffe sucks ass. Yeah I don't think so. I think it is cool that Jaffe just speak what he is thinking (like weezy said). Besides he was making a joke. Jaffe FTW!

I already pointed out that it was likely a joke, he confirmed it was a joke.

Miyamoto may be the legendary father of modern gaming, but he would likely have pointed out that he was talking about the necessity of the guns from a violence level as opposed to an absurdity level, but otherwise thought Jaffe's comment was amusing.

Please get a grip, people, and a sense of humor if at all possible.

Everything I've heard/read about Miyamoto makes me think that he was genuinely looking at the mechanics of the game and asking the question not as a means to ridicule but as part of his design process where he looks at the basic concept for what it is.

Exactly. This quote comes from a secondhand interview, and translated at that. We obviously don't have the entire conversation that took place to discern the exact meaning of what he said. Jaffe saw it, made a quick joke about it, and it got blown way out of proportion by fanboys into either "Miyamoto is a hypocite" or "Jaffe is an asshole" depending on which way your fanboy tendencies lean.  It's really much ado about nothing.

Jaffe saw it, made a quick joke about it,

It wasn't even that. An interviewer confronted him with the quotation and challenged him to respond on the spot. I think he did pretty well given the situation.

This entire debate is completely idiotic. I don't mean the debate between Jaffe and Miyamoto, because that doesn't exist. I mean the people reading things into this silly 2-line exchange and attacking the developers or one another based on it.

Based on the response to that video, I thought it would show Jaffe lashing out at his critics and at Nintendo in some childish way. Instead I saw an eloquent, heartfelt rant from a frustrated man. Everything he said was completely valid. So he swears at his detractors? Good, they deserve it -- they're morons who completely misconstrued what he said and attacked him personally. If his language bothers you, try to look past it and listen to his actual words.

Jaffe can be a little obnoxious, at least in print and out of context. I've found that since I actually started seeing and hearing him speak, I've gained a lot of respect for him. He says what he means. He's not worried about the politics of the industry the way everyone else is.

And Miyamoto, while a genius, lives in a very small world. The amount he's accomplished while restricting himself to 100% family-friendly fare is remarkable, but it's also limited the scope of his games and Nintendo in general. Scrapping an entire game because it features guns is a good example of that.
