During its 41 minute Direct, Nintendo showed off a staggering eight exclusives that won’t ever be found on another (1) console. No timed exclusives. No questions about the future or backdoor promises that a game will slip through to another console someday. These are games you will not find anywhere else unless you purchase a Wii U, and it is an exciting list of new surprises and previously anticipated games alike (2).

(1) What about the countless staggering 3rd party games that won't ever be found on WiiU?

(2) The direct had one unannounced game (a sequel that barely changes from the previous titles) while the competition showed tons of new IPs.

Nintendo is clearly lagging behind.

I may not necessarily agree with the author's reasons, but you seriously cannot think that 1st parties and 3rd parties are the same thing.  First party games for Nintendo have always been their selling points.  Even if the Wii U had ALL the exclusives on the other consoles, they still wouldn't have had as much of an effect as Nintendo's own first party games in terms of system selling.

Your second point, the 3D Mario and Mario Kart games were technically not games we knew anything about except for the fact that they said "yeah, we will be showing them."  Almost everyone knew they would be coming at some point, they just confirmed the showing at e3.

Clearly you always have something to say, even when it doesn't make much sense to make the comments.

They really put Sony to shame, Its not wonder Sony copies everything they do even resorting to making their new console look like a Chinese Wii clone knock off. It might fool some people into buying PS4 but when they get home and see they have to pay even more and wont get access to Nintendo quality games but Sony clones they will be very upset. Between my Wii U and PC I will have access to any game I want, especially when the PS4 emulator is out. Sony got lucky with the PS1 and PS2 due to the market wanting them there but since the release of the PS2 it has become clear their dominance was shear dumb luck and they will never repeat it. I look forward to the day they go 3rd party and that wont be long into this gen considering they've made less money than Sega as a console maker and Sega never dominated like Sony did.

I don't think the majority would agree. They showed games they had already mentioned that were coming late, then 3D World instead of Universe and DK instead of Metroid. I would say most were slightly disappointed.

Still, it was better than trying for a conference with the games they had.

There was never any "Super Mario Universe" to begin with. That was just somebody's dumb fucking rumor. Don't get me wrong, I want to eventually see an epic 3D Mario game (NOT set in space, thank you) more than anybody. BUT, that doesn't stop 3D World from looking really fun. Which it does.

So you agree that an "epic 3D Mario" would have been better than 3D world?

Also, I'm rather tired of hearing so many people whine about how Retro is doing a DK game and not a Metroid game. That's laughable as hell to me, because honestly, I didn't want them to do EITHER. I don't personally want to see another Metroid Prime. I love that trilogy, but it should STAY a trilogy. I'd love to see Retro tackle something else, either an original IP or at lest something like Star Fox. They aren't just the "Metroid guys", or the "Metroid and DK guys". They chose to do a new DKC. Boo hoo. It's not what I wanted either, but at the end of the day, I'm okay with it. It looks gorgeous, and it also looks a lot more fun than DKCR was. That was a good game, but it was TOO fucking hard in places, and the dumb tacked on shake-to-roll concept really made the platforming you were expected to do at times feel broken. Rolling with a BUTTON this time, and hopefully toning down some of the ridiculous levels to something a bit more fun to play and not balls-hard, I think I could dig it. Mind you, it's not at the top of my list, but if I can afford it I think I might try it out.

Again DK wasn't what you wanted either.

But the bigger point is, they didn't just show off what people already knew. Wind Waker HD, yes. Sonic Lost Word, yes. Nintendo should have held off and not shown those games at all until the E3 Direct. But otherwise, people wanted to know what their new Mario was, finally seeing the new Smash was  huge reveal, and Mega Man being announced in it was, for me personally, the highlight of E3. I totally agree with some people who say "new IPs", sure, I'd love to see more of that. But, on the other hand, to tell you the truth, most of those "new IPs", except for Crimson Dragon, that the other two consoles showed off, didn't look all that appealing to me. I get rather tired of all these different variations on shooters, and if it wasn't some kind of shooter, it was some kind of racing game. That's all well and good, very shiny graphics, etc. But none of it really appealed to me. Crimson Dragon looks awesome, and I wish it wasn't an Microsoft exclusive. But otherwise? The exclusives Nintendo showed off actually look like things I'd want to play or own. Not ALL of them, but certainly more than the others showed.

They had already said Smash and Kart would be playable at E3, so they are definitely in the catagory of games we knew would be there.

I'm just saying, you can claim that "most were slightly disappointed". But honestly, how many of those who would say they were disappointed, were going to run out and buy a Wii U this fall anyway? Honestly. Mario, DK, Zelda, Mario Kart, Smash Bros., those are the games that sell Nintendo consoles more than any other (along with Pokemon on portables). Nintendo knows this, and that is very likely why they're pulling out all those "big guns", for this holiday and early next year. Because they KNOW they fucked up with the software drouht and their poor advertising, and they are trying to fix it. Those games, along with Wii Party and Wii Fit, will bring in gamers, and bring in sales. A lot of gamers on here might claim they were disapointed, but I'd wager many of them were never really planning on buying a Wii U anytime soon anyway. So to me, while I too would certainly love to see an HD Star Fox, Wave Race, F-Zero, etc. etc., along with some new IPs, at the same time, I think Nintendo is doing the right thing for the present. Imagine, if you will, if Nintendo had NOT shown a 3D Mario at all. If they had not shown a Zelda. Or a Mario Kart. Or Smash Bros. What if they had shown off other games, like X, like Bayonetta 2, Shin Megami Tensai x Fire Emblem, Yarn Yoshi, any other number of games that are probably in development but they didn't show off. Imagine then, that they had NOT shown any of their "big franchises" at all. Guess what the reaction would be, from all those same people who claim to be disappointed?

But we already knew which of the big franchises they were showing, they had said they were showing Kart and Smash. It was what we didn't know about that was disappointing. Like you said above, you didn't want this Mario or DK either, and those were the only new game announcements they gave us. Two games we didn't really want.

They'd be saying "Where's Mario? Where's Zelda? Where's Smash Bros. and Mario Kart?" You could take that to the bank. In some ways it honestly seems like Nintendo is damned if they do, damned if they don't. People expect them to put out new iterations of their most popular franchises. Yet when they do, people cry that they rely on them too much, and they want to see someting new. So then Nintendo puts out something new. And then people cry that they want more Mario and Zelda. It's kind of a ridiculous cycle. I rest in the knowedge that not only am I personally really looking forward to Mario Kart 8 (it looks awesome), and Pikmin 3 (I've been waiting forever), and Smash Bros., along with new titles like Wonderful 101, but also knowing that an epic HD Zelda IS in the works, and I feel like Nintendo is going to pull out all the stops for that game. I rest in the knowledge that many more games will be coming down the pipeline, and that the Wii U is very young, with many years ahead of it to have another, more epic 3D Mario, to have Wave Race, to have Star Fox, or another Metroid (hopefully Super Metroid style, in HD). All those things are still possible. So I'm willing to enjoy what they're giving in the recent future, and trust that those, alone with the many cool indie games coming to eShop, and the handful of third party games I might actually be interested in, will be enough to tide me over until they reveal "bigger fish" down the road.

Again, we are talking about E3. None of the games you mention there were E3 announcements. For their E3 to be not disappointing, surely at least once game they announce there should be on your "looking forward to" list.

"Nintendo was the only console developer who had E3 be truly “about the games,” and in that regard, it passed with flying colors."

Isn't that kind of expected, since they're the only one who actually has a console out? Microsoft and Sony kind of HAD to talk about other things.

Personally, based on content, I think this E3 was pretty balanced. Take away Sony's cannon blasts at Microsoft and I don't think we had a real "winner". Everyone did pretty well. That being said, I expected more from Nintendo, such as Mario Kart this year or a reveal that would have sent everyone buzzing. I think they could have won cleanly if they'd had at least one big surprise.

Meh, I as a Nintendo fan was really disappointed. 3D world is a sequel to my least favorite 3D mario game of all time, and it just looks bland. DKTF looks way fun, and I'm happy it's being made, but I wish Retro had made a new IP, or revived starfox or Metroid. Smash looks good, but not amazing. Mario Kart 8 looks to be the pinnacle of MK, but it's still just another MK. This E3 was mainly damage control. They could have blown us away, but they played it extremely safe, and made the games that are going to help the console, not the fans.

W101, Pikmin 3, and X are my most anticipated Wii U games, and they were all previously revealed. Nintendo just didn't have any 'Wow" at E3.

You misunderstand me a bit I think. Yes, Mario 3D World and DK were not what I would have preferred to see. But having said that, I most likely AM going to get Mario, as it looks fun to me regardless. DKC, we'll see. It certainly looks better than DKCR, and actually pressing a button to roll can only be a good thing. It's not what I would have WANTED out of Retro, but neither is a new Metroid Prime. So I've accepted the fact that they're making a pretty solid looking new DKC game, and am moving on.

I do want some of the games they showed. I absolutely am getting Mario, Mario Kart, Pikmin, and Smash Bros. I am very interested in Wonderful 101 and will at least check out Sonic: Lost World. There is a chance if I can afford them, I might get them both. DKC I'll at least play at a friends house, and again, if I actually like it, I just might get it when I am able. Surely a few games I would have preferred to have announced, like Star Fox or Wave Race, were not shown. But I also understand that those games have a better chance of getting made, if the "big hitters" they are releasing and have shown off already, sell well, which they should. The games they showed and are releasing that we know about, are the ones with the greatest chance to help reignite Wii U sales, and better Wii U sales give us a greater chance of some of those other games we want, of ever happening. If the Wii U fails, we certainly won't see any of them.

So if people want to see some of those other games ever get made, it would behoove them to support the Wii U.
