There was never any "Super Mario Universe" to begin with. That was just somebody's dumb fucking rumor. Don't get me wrong, I want to eventually see an epic 3D Mario game (NOT set in space, thank you) more than anybody. BUT, that doesn't stop 3D World from looking really fun. Which it does.
Also, I'm rather tired of hearing so many people whine about how Retro is doing a DK game and not a Metroid game. That's laughable as hell to me, because honestly, I didn't want them to do EITHER. I don't personally want to see another Metroid Prime. I love that trilogy, but it should STAY a trilogy. I'd love to see Retro tackle something else, either an original IP or at lest something like Star Fox. They aren't just the "Metroid guys", or the "Metroid and DK guys". They chose to do a new DKC. Boo hoo. It's not what I wanted either, but at the end of the day, I'm okay with it. It looks gorgeous, and it also looks a lot more fun than DKCR was. That was a good game, but it was TOO fucking hard in places, and the dumb tacked on shake-to-roll concept really made the platforming you were expected to do at times feel broken. Rolling with a BUTTON this time, and hopefully toning down some of the ridiculous levels to something a bit more fun to play and not balls-hard, I think I could dig it. Mind you, it's not at the top of my list, but if I can afford it I think I might try it out.
But the bigger point is, they didn't just show off what people already knew. Wind Waker HD, yes. Sonic Lost Word, yes. Nintendo should have held off and not shown those games at all until the E3 Direct. But otherwise, people wanted to know what their new Mario was, finally seeing the new Smash was huge reveal, and Mega Man being announced in it was, for me personally, the highlight of E3. I totally agree with some people who say "new IPs", sure, I'd love to see more of that. But, on the other hand, to tell you the truth, most of those "new IPs", except for Crimson Dragon, that the other two consoles showed off, didn't look all that appealing to me. I get rather tired of all these different variations on shooters, and if it wasn't some kind of shooter, it was some kind of racing game. That's all well and good, very shiny graphics, etc. But none of it really appealed to me. Crimson Dragon looks awesome, and I wish it wasn't an Microsoft exclusive. But otherwise? The exclusives Nintendo showed off actually look like things I'd want to play or own. Not ALL of them, but certainly more than the others showed.
I'm just saying, you can claim that "most were slightly disappointed". But honestly, how many of those who would say they were disappointed, were going to run out and buy a Wii U this fall anyway? Honestly. Mario, DK, Zelda, Mario Kart, Smash Bros., those are the games that sell Nintendo consoles more than any other (along with Pokemon on portables). Nintendo knows this, and that is very likely why they're pulling out all those "big guns", for this holiday and early next year. Because they KNOW they fucked up with the software drouht and their poor advertising, and they are trying to fix it. Those games, along with Wii Party and Wii Fit, will bring in gamers, and bring in sales. A lot of gamers on here might claim they were disapointed, but I'd wager many of them were never really planning on buying a Wii U anytime soon anyway. So to me, while I too would certainly love to see an HD Star Fox, Wave Race, F-Zero, etc. etc., along with some new IPs, at the same time, I think Nintendo is doing the right thing for the present. Imagine, if you will, if Nintendo had NOT shown a 3D Mario at all. If they had not shown a Zelda. Or a Mario Kart. Or Smash Bros. What if they had shown off other games, like X, like Bayonetta 2, Shin Megami Tensai x Fire Emblem, Yarn Yoshi, any other number of games that are probably in development but they didn't show off. Imagine then, that they had NOT shown any of their "big franchises" at all. Guess what the reaction would be, from all those same people who claim to be disappointed?
They'd be saying "Where's Mario? Where's Zelda? Where's Smash Bros. and Mario Kart?" You could take that to the bank. In some ways it honestly seems like Nintendo is damned if they do, damned if they don't. People expect them to put out new iterations of their most popular franchises. Yet when they do, people cry that they rely on them too much, and they want to see someting new. So then Nintendo puts out something new. And then people cry that they want more Mario and Zelda. It's kind of a ridiculous cycle. I rest in the knowedge that not only am I personally really looking forward to Mario Kart 8 (it looks awesome), and Pikmin 3 (I've been waiting forever), and Smash Bros., along with new titles like Wonderful 101, but also knowing that an epic HD Zelda IS in the works, and I feel like Nintendo is going to pull out all the stops for that game. I rest in the knowledge that many more games will be coming down the pipeline, and that the Wii U is very young, with many years ahead of it to have another, more epic 3D Mario, to have Wave Race, to have Star Fox, or another Metroid (hopefully Super Metroid style, in HD). All those things are still possible. So I'm willing to enjoy what they're giving in the recent future, and trust that those, alone with the many cool indie games coming to eShop, and the handful of third party games I might actually be interested in, will be enough to tide me over until they reveal "bigger fish" down the road.
