Forums - Gaming Discussion - 7th to 8th gen is the smallest jump in graphics I have seen. Yep I will be the bad guy and say it.

It is impossible to judge this early on in a generation. Right now we have some of the best looking launch titles ever due to shared tech both in the development world and on the hardware side. These titles are miles ahead of PS2 or PS3 launch titles. However, we will not truly know what this gen holds in store tell we get around 5 years in, and devs have truly harnessed the power.

Soldier of Fortune PS2 Launch FPS

Call of Duty 3 PS3 Launch FPS
BattleField 4 PS4 WIP Launch Title

You found some great comparisons, the choice of screenshots and all.

Even though I do think we're now witnessing a leap that satisfies me, clearly the 6th to 7th gen was a bigger jump.

I agree, but perhaps the difference in graphics for games launching at the end of this generation will show how significant the graphics jump was.

I feel the opposite really, ps4 and xbone are a huge step up, its almost as big as xbox to xbox 360 to me, very impressed and your using tiny crappy screens if you compared side by side on a 1080p flat screen, i'm sure you would see a generational leap.

That's simply because we reached the point ov diminishing returns. what can be graphically achieved on ps360 is already so great that even though we can say these new games are a noticeable step up, it's a pretty short step.

Graphics arent the be all end all, they are better though maybe not the huge leap you were expecting.

However its the other stuff im looking forward too, all games running 1080p 60fps, more going on at once, and finally, large scale multiplayer

The best way to find out if you can trust somebody is to trust them.

I agree that the jump is the smallest between generations so far, but look again at the MGS4 versus MGS5 comparison.

To me it is a huge leap and when I watched the conference where the game transitioned from cut-scene to that gameplay scene with the horses my mind was blown. It's almost photorealistic.

This:

to this

is a Dog Shit leap in comparison.

MGS4 also had cutscenes that transitioned the same way.

The leap in graphics are good but at the end of the day, i play games to have fun, not to see what could just going outside.

You're comparing tiny static screen captures from each generation.

Thought the same thing.

@ OP: You can go on and "say it", just like I can say: "I feel you are wrong". ;)

You do know that if i blow up the ps1 pics you will see much more faults with graphics than if I blew up the ps360 pics.

Tell me this isn't a huge generational leap:

Damn! People can complain all that they want but this 8th gen leap is good enough

Sure it is good enough no one is doubting that. All I am saying its the smallest leap in comparison to other gens.

Completely agree
