Well, here we are again! It's E3, all five major companies have shown off what to expect in the next year or so (Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony, EA, and Ubisoft), and the internet has been all aflutter concerning what has come, what has been shown, and what is new.
I want to know how everyone ranks the five E3 Presentations in terms of surprises, news, announcements, and your own personal opinions on what was shown. Here are my rankings:
5 - Ubisoft - Score: 3/10
After the amazing reveals of Watch Dogs, Assassin's Creed III, Rayman Legends, and Far Cry 3 last year, Ubisoft takes a dive with a boring, bland show that doesn't introduce us to a whole lot of new or original content, and is interspersed with unpleasant, awkward #girlwood jokes. Huge disappointment from a company I genuinely admire for their support of all new consoles.
4 - EA - Score: 7.5/10
I don't like EA (I don't think anyone actually likes the company), but they showed off some funny and impressive stuff here. If you ignore BOUNCE-TEK physics for basketballs and the entire EA Sports segment in the middle, they showed a lot of cool stuff. PEggle 2, Plants vs Zombies 2, Battlefield 4, TitanFall, Dragon Age, and Mirror's Edge 2 all look like their own sort of fun (even though I maintain a strong sense of caution regarding all titles). That said, Battlefield 4's tower collapse and Mirror's Edge 2 were both awesome, and TitanFall looks like the best microsoft exclusive this year.
3 - Microsoft - Score: 8/10
Seriously, the presentation itself was really good up until the price announcement. I thought they really delivered on their promise to bring the games, and a lot of what I saw was pretty damn impressive. TitanFall may be kinda generic, but it looks awesome. Snagging Insomniac is a huge win, and Sunset Overdrive definitely looks like a game I'd gladly pick up if I had the Xbox One (and will on PS4 if it proves to be multiplat). Ryse looks gorgeous and like it has potential, Curse of Brotherhood actually looked really awesome to me, Quantm Break has me intriqued, Project spark has me interested (if it didn't use Kinect and SmartGlass), and as I'm going through the list there's a lot I am finding I am eager for, even cautiously optimistic for Crimson Dragon and Dead rising 3. Sadly, that price is too much (you could hear the crickets), and that rape joke was not something you say on live TV. Smack Talk is alright between friends, but that was uncouth. I may pick up an Xbox One down the line, as the game list looks interesting, but the price and the features of the console itself are not appealing to me at all.
2 - Nintendo - Score: 8.5/10
I've never seen so much happy packed into such a small and short presentation. Just know that they announced sequels to what I think are 2/3 of my favorite games from the 7th Generation: Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze and Smash Brothers. I recently purchased a WiiU out of faith for Nintendo's willingness to bring it and those games alone made me jump for joy, justifying the purchase. but then something happened, and they also released a bunch of other stuff, too. Super Mario 3D World? hells yes! Wind Waker is my second favorite Legend of Zelda game next to Link to the Past, and both are getting attention! X looks awesome! I won't get to use the Art Academy thing, and I'm not excited about Minigame compilations, but everything else shown blew me away!
1 - Sony - Score: 9/10
You all saw this coming. the opening of the show was light on new details and focused a bit too much on TV and online services, but once they revealed the console, it was a veritable roller coaster. The system is small and decent looking, though nothing special, and many of the games will be multiplatform, but the PS4 has me excited. They showed the ORder: 1866, which looks good and is done by an impressive studio. they're shifting attention to indies and finding ways to let them self publish on Sony's plaforms (which is a HUGE win for me), the reiteration of Drive Club, Knack, Killzone, and inFamous all continue to look fun, and knowing I get Drive Club for being a PS+ member has me very happy. Destiny looks outstanding (same as TitanFall), Assassin's Creed and Watch Dogs both had their best respective presentations at the Sony presentation, and we got official confirmation of Kingdom Hearts III and Final Fantasy vsXIII being rebranded as XV. That's not to mention the perfect price (399 USD) and the legendary, historical dig at Microsoft's used games and DRM policies. They did manage to sneak in that you'll have to pay for PSN+ if you want to play online, which I'm not happy with, but I can tolerate it as long as the service continues to provide stellar deals. If it wasn't for the PSN+ trick and the slow start full of shit we already knew, this would have been a perfect or damn near perfect presentation. I am excited to see what this next generation has in store.
So what do you rank them? agree or disagree?
