Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Honest Discussion - Nintendo E3: What went right and what went wrong?

This E3 was either a make or break for gamer's at large in regards to their interest for Wii U. Nintendo delivered on their promise made to Nintendo Direct viewers back in January 2013: show Mario Kart and Mario 3D in playable form at E3. They succeeded on that front.

They provided great details on Mario 3D, Mario Kart, and X, to name a few. These games look great and they will be a great addition to my library.

However, it seems that gamers simply do not ''agree'' with Nintendo's take on the next Mario 3D adventure. Opinions are mixed to say the least as some say that ''it looks like a McDonald's video game'' and others like how the game looks and plays. Personally, I think it looks great and the developers interview only made me want to see more of that game.

The biggest blow was Retro's game was Donkey Kong. Reports seemed to indicate that they were working on a new IP but yet again, I left dissapointed.

Overall, I am quite pleased by what Nintendo offered through this direct but I still feel that it was an average showing. The games that they have shown are all great and I will most likely buy everything that was showcased but honestly, Nintendo played it safe. Nintendo needs to breathe life to new IP's. Nintendo needed that 'WOW' factor which sadly, didn't happen.

I'd like to know your opinions as well? Am I the only one excited by what was showcased but disappointed as well? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Right: The games they showed looked great.

Wrong: Too few games

"Wii are legion, for Wii are many"

There wasn't a "wow" reveal, because most of what was shown was already known to exist.

You know what would've been a good candidate for pre-E3 radio silence? Mario Kart 8. Say nothing, then hit everyone with a gorgeous surprise trailer and exciting multiplayer details.

Not really, this was pretty much what I expected. Though I heard that Nintendo plan to present more surprise during E3 and expect more directs soon.

Don’t follow the hype, follow the games

Mixture of excitement and disappointment.I´m very excited for Mario Kart, Smash and X, and yes, due to my expectations, and coming off of the Galaxy games, my reaction to the new Mario was "huh?..that´s´it?"

I really enjoy DKC Returns, the best 2D platformer of the 7th generation, imo...and while I´m sure the new game will satisfy my platforming needs, I couldn´t help but feel underwhelmed, mainly due to all the secrecy that surrounded what Retro was up to.

Interested in W101 too.

Good: The games looked pretty good, Smash Bros is my most anticipated Wii U game. I will buy a Wii U based off of how good that and Pikmin 3 are.

Bad: Zero surprises, even DK was kind of expected when you think about it. Also, Wii U wasn't mentioned in terms of peripherals, price cut, system updates, or new added features coming up.

Right: The most games coming out for the Wii U and 3DS look very good, their trailers give a excellent view on how the games are going to look and what the developers were trying to do with them.

Wrong: Lack of variety and appearance of stagnation. Most people are blasting Nintendo because they feel the company relies to much on their family friendly cash cow franchises and "gimmick" features rather then trying to appeal to the now primary "core" Western gamers. The games they showed that are going to be released this year do little to dispelling that belief. Granted no doubt both X and Bayonetta 2 look great but both of them are 2014 releases.

With the PS4 and Xbox One coming this year, what they have set to be released may not be enough to push the sales of the struggling Wii U nor battle against some of the other companies exclusives. Nintendo announcing one original IP with a more Western flavor or one of their more popular ones in the West like a new Metriod, Star Fox or even Eternal Darkness they would be in much better position then they are.

It's Killer tbh, Mario Kart 8 and Mario 3D World, DKC at Best Buy is genius.
