Forums - Gaming Discussion - Sony: Online DRM "Up To Publishers"

My guess is that some of the big publishers are going to wait and see whether consumers accept DRM and support the Xbox One, or make a stand and support the PS4 and Wii U instead.  I posted this in another thread, but in this article, EA CFO Blake Jorgensen states,

"...it’ll remain to be seen as to the services associated with those as to how consumers decide which direction they might want to go,” Jorgensen said about the PS4 and Xbox One.

I'm guessing EA is putting one foot in (e.g., with EA/Microsoft partnership for their sports lineup), while keeping the other foot out (e.g., upcoming games like Dragon Age: Inquisition currently do not have any announced exclusivity), and waiting to see what consumers will accept.  Ultimately, I feel that it is important for those who care about these issues to make a stand and not support the consoles or titles that implement these practices.

lol so Tretton stood on that stage and deliberately mislead/lied to millions of people in regards to PS4 DRM. Hilarious. And yet some people will still applaud it. Someone should probably edit that Youtube video with an asterisk and put in "* - Depending on publisher."

Personally I am curious to see how publishers handle this. I can't see them not putting DRM on PS4 but then putting it on Xbone.

They stated in Feb it was upto Publishers.

What MS has done is implement MS DRM - 24hour check. Sony have not done that. This is what they have said.... "we are not doing Drm"... no one has lied.

I'm aware they stated in February that it was up to publishers. I am one of the few people here who has been saying it would be up to the publishers. Did you not see the huge reaction Tretton's slides and comments got here and everywhere yesterday? Or the many threads here leading up to the conference and the posts right after? People made the assumption that this E3 announcement meant PS4 would have no DRM on it no matter what game you buy. Because that's the way they presented it. Like I said, misleading and basically lying.

I am well aware Xbone has built-in system wide DRM. The 24 hour check in thing. I am more worried about what publishers can do themselves on each game. The fact that the PS4 allows them to do anything they can do on Xbone makes me feel better about DRM next generation.

Publishers would have a hard time implementing their own 24 hour DRM into their games... and to be honest it would be a disaster for them if they did.

Also the key tech of the PS4 is that it can be offline... there is no way a publisher can get around that fact. So the only thing they can do is codes in boxes... which is what they do right now. They would also be in trouble if they try to mess with retail.

So all is good.

Making an indie game : Dead of Day!

Same as PS360, Wii U. Anyone with common sense will disregard this. People without common sense and Anti Sony fans will try to spin this like the PS4 has the same issues as the Xbox One when it doesn't.

So, this is literally just confirmation that nothing has changed.

Nothing to see here. Move along.

Pretty much...but, well, it's clearly a confusing issue right now for a lot of people. I hope this has cleared things up for some people, but maybe it's just confused the situation further...

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

Bolded is not fact. That is an outright falsehood. I don't want to call you a liar, because I think you truly believe what you are saying. It is just completely wrong.

Exactly what DRM do publishers control on Xbone that they cannot control on PS4?

I am taking this news to mean that the only real DRM the Xbone will have is the daily check in. I can't see 3rd party companies loading up Xbone games with DRM and not PS4. And I can't see every publisher using DRM.

It would be easy to go around it all the publisher would have to is make so you have to be connected inorder to play the game at all.  Sony cant really force them to not implement a drm just because they said there console can be played offline

So, it's just like it is on PS3 already ?
