i wonder if sony will still have an online pass after their conference yesterday. since next gen will be almost all about online that would be already 10 bucks per used games sony would ask for.

since sony is using now PS+ to create revenue in the PSN, it would not make sense to pay twice to play online... MS never did the online pass because they had live gold to deal with that... so i guess PS3 games will still have online pass like always and PS4 will not...

The Xbox 360 did have online passes in addition to Xbox Live fees.

Sony has confirmed that the digital rights management of PlayStation 4 software will be up to third-party publishers. Speaking on GTTV, Sony's Jack Tretton stated, "The DRM decision for third-party games will be up to publishers."

A bit of a blow, no? Looks like things aren't quite so clean-cut as we thought.

Eh, how is Sony supposed to do anything about that?

If Ea wants to ship a code with a game and say, "you can't plya multiplayer without this code or an online pass", sony really can't really say no without reprogramming the game lol. All a company needs to exert DRM on the user is an internet connection and lines of code.

THIS... the only way sony could do to prevent things like this is to force developers to connect their games to PSN isntead of the freadom they have today to connect to their own servers... if we want fredom to us gamers, is only fair that sony give the developers/publishers some freadom too...

the main thing is... it will not require 24H check in... so the DRM 3rd parties may implement is not intrusive between us and the console we own...

stop treating developers and publishers like the enemy... its their work, they are trying to sell... their work, their rules if you want to enjoy their work, you should accept the rules. if you don't like the rules, don't buy it. hit them where it hurts... but as a platform holder Sony is doing the right thing here... we have to see the two sides of this coin...

For online gaming, Sony already "forces" you to connect to PSN first, regardless of who owns the game servers.  That's why you always had to have the latest firmware update and sign in to PSN first before being able to play online.  First party games can continue to use Sony servers, while other developers / publishers can either use their own servers or games can support player-to-player gaming.  This is no different from what Microsoft is doing on the 360, and what they will most likely do on the One.

The difference lines in offline gaming.  Sony said that disc based games will work without going online (and they didn't mention anything about first party or 3rd party games, so it looks like publishers cannot do anything about this).  Microsoft said that all games, even for offline play, will need to check in at least once every 24 hours or they will not work.

are you even disagreeing with me?

:) i did not get what you were trying to me that is different from what i said. its in other words... for sure, but.........

Anything is up to the publishers, it has always been like that. Their games, their choices.

Did anyone think Sony would make the publishers sign a contract that says "No DRM" ?

It's been proven again and again that game with intrusive DRMs don't bring in more money. Good games, on the other side ...

and sony is preventing the intrusive DRM... yayyyy... other "acceptable" DRM is out of their hands*, but the intrusive one with periodical check-ins for the hole system is out of question... party time...

* - like Jack said, its up to devs/publishers, they can not prevent that from happening without taking the developers freedom witch is as important as our freedom as consumers

I just wanted to comment that Sony already forces all the games to connect to PSN first. They could probably do everything you said right now, but that would probably annoy publishers (if they bypassed their onlines passes), so I don't think they would do that.

The second part about online gaming wasn't directed at you.  I just thought I'd say that since there seems to be a lot of misinformation going around.  What Sony says implies that 3rd party games cannot be disabled for offline play, no matter what the publishers want.

I thought when you said MS you meant any and all 360 games.  My mistake.

It's the exact same system as the PS3, and probably the WiiU. Publishers can still use online passes and other restrictions if they please. Of course the system as a whole won't be blocking every used game.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!
