Forums - Gaming Discussion - Sunset Overdrive, Fuse, and the state of Insomniac Games (And a sad IG fanboy)

(Sorta long rant, tl;dr at bottom, can skip italics if you want to skim)

With the announcement of a new IP from Insomniac Games today at the Microsoft E3 conference, I felt like I wanted to share my feelings on the current state of the company as a long time (obsessive) fanboy of the company.

First, a bit of history; I really became a fan with the release of the Ratchet & Clank franchise back in 2002, and began to follow the company actively. I loved every PS2 Ratchet game (Going Commando is the best. <3 Angela), and still play them to this day. Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction is literally the reason why I got a PS3 6 months after launch. While waiting for it to release, I got Resistance: Fall of Man. FPS games aren't really my thing, but it was fun. ToD turned out to be great, as did Q4B, ACiT (favourite R&C game, and one of my all time favourites), and R2 (co-op, campaign was eh). R3 was alright, but the co-op was gone, and the campaign was... good, but bad.

With that out of the way, I would like to discuss the recent direction of the company. Since the new studio opened in 2009, we have seen Insomniac take some new approaches. They tried a co-op Ratchet & Clank game (All 4 One, which was entertaining, and Full Frontal Assault, which wasn't my cup of tea). They also went into mobile/facebook gaming with Outernauts (looks interesting, but I swore to never touch Facebook gaming). Their most recent release came out last month; Fuse (formerly Overstrike). I own Fuse, and I've played it quite a bit. It's entertaining. But it's not really a title I'd say is great. On par with A4O, perhaps.

What does all this mean? Well, they're trying new things. That's good. They tried out some co-op and a tower defense game. More variety isn't bad, right? Well, sort of. More variety is good when the variety is good quality. I was able to write off the newer R&C games as being developed by the new studio, but Fuse was made by the main studio.

So, time to put on your tin foil hats. Compare Overstrike with Sunset Overdrive. Note the similarities in art style (and name...). I've always maintained that EA was not the reason for the change from Overstrike to Fuse, and I believe that this is the case. I think that Sunset Overdrive is the reason behind the change. More specifically, when they found people not enjoying Overstrike, they had to change it, but still wanted to make a similar game... and came up with Sunset Overdrive to compensate. So, what the hell happened? Did Insomniac pitch this game to Microsoft and then just decide to send Fuse out to die? It sure feels like it. Fuse doesn't come anywhere close to the wonder that was A Crack in Time. I didn't expect a masterpiece, but I have to admit that I'm let down a bit even with my low expectations.

Where does that leave me? Disappointed. That's made worse because of the exclusivity... and not out of any dislike towards the X1. My problem is that if Insomniac were to make more Resistance or Ratchet games, those would be PS4 exclusives. It feels like a bit of a kick in the crotch for IG to split their games between consoles like that. Of course, I don't know that they'll even touch either franchise again, and I'd really only be upset if they made a new Ratchet game. But I don't want to have to own two consoles just to play all of the games from my favourite company. I bet that makes me sound like a bitter fanboy. Well, I am. With the declining quality in Insomniac's titles, and now the possibility of needing multiple consoles to play all of their games, I'm upset. Sure, I could just not buy all of their games, but then I wouldn't be the obsessive IG fanboy that I've been for literally half of my life.

tl;dr: Sunset Overdrive is why Overstrike became Fuse. Insomniac has really stumbled with their recent games. I'm upset that I can't play all of their games on one console, and I'm also sad that I don't even know if I want to play all of their games anymore.

If Sunset bombs like fuse (even Resistance 3 was a sales bomb) then I can't see Insomniac staying around for much longer.

I wish Insomniac nothing but success no matter where their games are available. I'm still stoked about the Ratchet and Clank movie which they are involved in producing!

Haven't you learned anything in the past 7 years? Wait a year or so, if it doesn't turn out that it is ony timed exclusive then you can start crying over a game that you may or may not play. From what was shown, you CAN'T know if the game is any good.

as long as they make another ratchet ,I don't care.

they were releasing every year one game therefore a i hope they are working parallel on another ratchet game.

only thing that surprises me and make them look like hypocrits:
they said they'd left sony to make multiplatform games-and now they seem to end up again as 1st party

Why would they send out a game,to die. That does'nt make any sense 2 me. With all these game companies having a hard time making a profit, why would they do that?

My fear for them is that Sunset Overdrive (or whatever the name) may end up like another Fuse, i.e go the gritty, dark, violent route instead of staying cartoonish and full of personality. If that happens again...I've no words, it'd show how sad our industry is and how true C.S. Lewis' words ring in this day and age.

Critics who treat adult as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.

I think you misunderstood me. If Sunset Overdrive is exclusive to the X1 and future IG Ratchet games are exclusive to the PS4, I would need both consoles to play both games, something that I don't really have the money to do. I have purchased and played every IG game excluding Disruptor, and I don't want to stop, because part of being a fanboy is being irrational about the company you love. But I also recognize that their games have been getting worse in recent years, and I'm finally admitting that the company isn't what it used to be.

It could be a timed exclusive, which addresses part of my issue. It could also be the case that they will not return to Ratchet in the next generation, which would effectively address the same part. I am stating my feelings based on what I know and believe now. I also am not claiming that Sunset Overdrive will be good or bad. I'm saying that IG's recent track record is not inspiring. I defended Overstrike, and I defended the change to Fuse, making those same claims (later changing to you haven't played the whole game, so you can't say it's crap yet). Well, I don't want to blindly defend the company if their games disappoint me. The trailer for Sunset Overdrive looked fun. So did the one for Overstrike.

Doesn't make sense to me, but pretty much everyone on the planet knew that Fuse would bomb, unless it got stellar reviews. It didn't, and the sales are rather bad. Maybe Insomniac didn't see it coming, but it's hard to really believe that. They got a lot of crap for changing Overstrike to Fuse, and it was right there on their website and facebook page. How could they not notice?

I'll be perfectly honest, no sarcasm or trolling intended: I think Resistance and Ratchet & Clank are in better hands with Sony World Wide Studios than with the current Insomniac. If those franchises have a future, it should be with a better developer. Harsh? Yeah, but I think their recent track record speaks for itself. They need to reprove themselves.

I'll tell you right now, Insomniac making an exclusive XO game gets a no more than a shrug from me.
