Forums - Movies & TV - Will "The Purge" be the biggest surprise hit of the year?

I think The Purge will surely do well and will (obviously) make a lot of money for the studio, but I doubt it'll be a large blockbuster or anything. It's shaping up to do some good numbers as Google Trends and other outlets are showing that "The Purge" is actually getting a lot of attention, though.

The premise is so fucking dumb!

Seems like a decent home invasion film though

What would you consider a blockbuster? 45 million first week on a 3 million dollar budget. Then we have a 50-60 percent drop next weekend. It could push out close to 100 million.

Not talking about just weekend, but total. A blockbuster would be near or over 1 Billion total in the box-office. (Purely my definition.)

The premise can be seen as a critique of anarchist or minarchist view of government.  I have not seen the film, but it piqued my interest, because it looks like it goes to the heart of individuals who don't want government, or also goes into how people end up feeling the poor and disadvantaged are a burden on society.  The world of the film is one where one day of the year, society has the opportunity for the advantaged people to go and off those they consider losers in life, who are a burden.  Idea is to have natural order eliminate the loser and unsuccessful so that the competent can survive.  For those who end up arguing now that the government is the source of all evil in society today, the films shows a society where it is the people themselves that do it, with no government.  I do recall here that when discussing The Hunger Games, out came people saying, "It is the government doing this evil!".  Well The Purge is similar in that you off the disadvantaged, so that the strong survive, and it is NOT the government doing it.

crime is legal for a day and the best plot they can come up with is a home invasion slasher flick

Considering how low of a budget there is for the movie, it would make sense.  Also, it is very likely home invasion is something that got greenlighted.  But, it would be interesting to end up doing something else with the material.  Like, here is a website done, based on the material:

And it is getting some mixed views of the film:

Here is an interview with the director:

Nah, a billion is for megablockbusters. A box office hit is based more on if it wins its first weekend, how long it does well, how much it actuall makes, etc.

100 million will be killer for a 3 million dollar movie. Not many films make it to a billion. They are still huge hits.

It is possible The Purge could end up rethinking things.  I can also see a larger budget for a sequel and the world of the Purge be looked at further.
