its a portable nintendo64. as long as you have it , non of your gaming needs wont be unfilled, i promise.

DS XL. It will be cheaper and let you play the DS games as they were intended.

^^ DS XL is more expensive then the regular 3DS. Off course, the 3DS XL is even more expensive than that.

Anyway, I'd get the regular 3DS if I were you. If it's your first handheld and not your primary console, no need to shell out a lot of cash for the big version when the cheaper one does everything exactly the same. Choose 3DS over DS, you'll be set for a while, even if you mainly play DS games on it. Who knows, you might even like to get a new game some time. Also, you won't be getting a DSlite, those are discontinued, you'd get a DSi. Unless off course you'd be buying it second hand. Not that it makes any real difference anyway.

Does it use cartridges or emulation?

The 3DS XL is all-around better than the standard 3DS.
