I think it is hard to deny that it was a bad press conference. That doesn't mean that the console will be bad, but that was certainly a bad first impression

Nothing positive.. out of those 4 things listed. Had he bitched about the cloud, the controller, the multimedia stuff, some of the features, those are positives for me. The name, a Kinect in the box, whining about the reveal.. those are not an issue for me.

Yeah but your post is exactly the point I am bringing up. You say plenty of people are defending it and yet your defense of these topics consist of "It's fine to me" "No big deal to me" "makes no difference to me" and again "I think it was fine". Overall the tone of the defense is Ah who gives a shit. Very neutral and Dr. Pepperish I guess I am trying to say that the defense of these things isn't being fought with positive counter attacks but rather a simply "So What"!!! |
You're getting bland responses because your complaints are mostly petty little nuances and very opinionated. The name of the console? We're supposed to put real effort into defending that? Whining about what wasn't in the reveal even though MS specifically said what would not be in there? I gave you positive "counter-attacks" for the other two. Are you looking for mindless shilling or something?
Scratch #3 off the list. It can be turned off in privacy settings.
#1 is subjective (I mean, who like the name "Wii" when it was announced?
#2.....well, Sony isn't exactly denying that PS4 will have DRM. Weird for publishers to demand it from MS but not Sony.
#4 means nothing when the thing actually released. A funny memory to the haters, just like Sony E3 2006. Nothing more.

The issue wasn't so much that their reveal didn't focus on games. That would have been fine, in the right context. The problem was that they didn't even provide a solid reason for the lack of games until something like 12 hours *after* the event, when they went into damage control. They could have opened up their event by going "We've got great games lined up, and we're excited to talk about them, but with E3 so close, we've decided to have a games spectacular at the show, and so we're going to focus on other features of the system right now."... accompanied by some images as teasers. Something as simple as that would have had everyone going into hype mode, speculating about what MS have in store. And if MS considered games to be the most important thing, they would certainly have done something like this. The fact that they didn't, that games were an afterthought and something to bring out as damage control, rather than as something deserving of dedicated focus in an appropriate location, is what so many gamers are finding so offensive. Nintendo, in their most recent Nintendo Direct, demonstrated just how much they've got in store for E3 by giving out a significant bit of gaming info ahead of time that would typically have gotten E3 focus. Sony have emphasised gaming repeatedly since the reveal, which I believe focused primarily on games. Microsoft, on the other hand, basically said that being an "entertainment hub" is more important to them than the games. And THAT is how they've messed up, in this respect. But then, who didn't see this coming? Look at what MS has done with their other new/"upgraded" products over the last 5 or so years. I'm rather surprised that people didn't see this coming. Sony went through something akin to this situation with the whole rootkit fiasco - and that taught them enough of a lesson that they're not going to go all-in with the DRM until it's proven to be safe to do so. MS had no such lesson. |
This is a pretty good analysis actually!!
I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!
Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.
"whats in the name" is as equivalent to sony not showing PS4 box.
Sales after a few years will tell who messed up

For any other company it would be true...
But when you look at how the release is still months away, and add in the fact that Microsoft has butt tons of cash for marketing... It probably won't mean anything. For who they are trying to sell the console to, the effect of a good commerical during a Football game or during The Voice will do more for the casual crowd then the reveal or E3 anyway.
