FE is a strategy RPG but I except for the turn based play I don't see how it is so much different from BG 1 or 2. I always think of a strategy game as being far- off and impersonal. But in this game you don't move units {as in a army} but individuals [although they call them units]. You also can specifically up grade that character even make weapons for he or she. (I especially like being able to make and name my own weapons). Each charater has a story and a personality...

But it is very linear... I think of it more a Book with Fun Game Parts in it.

If you buy it and you think like me, all of the very helpful tutorials will lead you to believe that it was a mistake to buy the game. But once you read all of them ( some of them are very comical & entertaining) you'll have a blast.

Baldurs Gate 2

fantastic story, fights are super strategic, six person teams give endless combination options, have played it at least 3 times with Fighter, Mage and Ranger and different teams, never was the same (exept for story and quest), but since the story can change in some parts and the sidequest are endless I´m bound to play it again every two years or so.

1.Fire Emblem 9 2.Kingdom Hearts 1, far better than 2 in almost every aspect ( Pride Lands made it worth the playtime though). 3.Tales of Symphonia

I have to agree with all the Xenogears fans that its my number 1. Such an intense story. Plus I always enjoy when flaws in political/religious structures are explored. Legend of Dragoon is probably my number 2 because unlike a lot of RPGs i've played none of the characters were annoying. In most games i've played there is usually some really whinny character involved in the story that distracts me from getting more involved into a game because of how they act or talk. This is basically the only reason I cannont stand playing Baten Kaidos. I find multiple characters very annoying especially in their dialouge. It had a great new battle system and the story seemed pretty interesting but I couldnt stand listening to those characters interact. None of that in Dragoon, plus the battle system was always fun and kept me entertained. and Super Mario RPG is number 3 mainly because of the comedy in it. I don't laugh out loud playing games very often (by myself anyway) but Booster makes me laugh almost every time.

And just since no one has included them yet i think the original Pokemon games deserve an honorable mention.

Yeh, KH2 was far too easy, however, my main problem with it was that when I played it through I played it on my PS3, and then one boss essentially froze the game, so I had to repeat nearly 20 hours work to get back to that point on my PS2, although I did think it had a good story and I loved final form

Definitely Ultima VII (a huge gameworld where you may go to pick up some wheat, take it to the mill, make some flour and from the flour with an owen some bread... cities with hundreds people to tal with... and all in 1993, a bit before Oblivion) and Planescape: Torment (the best screenplay ever written for a videogame: the best black isle / bioware game so far)

Quote, great choices Elendil. I add Anachronox, an JRPG for PC developed by americans ( Ion Storm ). It has one of the best screenplay ever written for a videogame, too.

Yes, your mother, I played to Vagrant Story. I think it has a great mood and graphic ( for Ps1 capabilities )  but I prefer the action/exploration of Ocarina of time ( albeit OoT is not a true JRPG ).
Btw your nickname has remembered me of " Mother 2 " AKA " Earthbound" for Snes.
It is a freaky and ingenius DragonQuest-style game set in a modern environment ( a true Nintendo gem ).

Jstam , I played a lot of Snes RPG. I played to Shadowrun, too.
It was a very original entry on the Snes RPG library.
