BenVTrigger said: Microsoft Pros: 1. Showed the console! This is huge from a marketing stand point. Retailers can show it, MS can flaunt it, and gamers can know what's going in their entertainment center 2. Media. It's 2013 and we don't just use our consoles for games anymore. In fact 60 percent of all Xbox Live time is spent doing things besides gaming. Media will be a large component of next gen. 3. Beautiful OS. They showed a lot of it and it was impressive. Fast, slick, and capable of real multi tasking 4. Mass market games. COD, Madden, Fifa. These may not be big titles to us but they are huge titles for mainstream. Gamers first view and the "best versions" are on Xbox One Cons 1. Core gamers miss you! Forza was nice but expected. Remedies game was cool but confusing. Should have announced another core title and played a live demo. 2. Too much media. Especially the TV stuff. Lets be honest it dragged here 3. Vague on the things core gamers want to know. Pre owned? Used games? Always online? Never mentioned in the conference, and the answers we got were confusing. In closing Sony did a great job selling to their base and core gamers have every right to be excited. They dropped the ball appealing to mass market though. MS, great job selling to the masses and I think NA is on lock now. That said the core base is angry and I didn't see anything that will really help the situation in Japan and Europe |
okay good points for both;
I like to highlight what Unitsmiley said earlier people who watch events like these are the core of the core, I find it a little hard to believe that the casusals are watching this as intently as you and I, And I think this is where the problems lies with MS that spent nearly half of their conference talking about their services where Sony did was showed what their console was capable with showing actual gameplay with killzone and Knack(though true that these won't appeal to the mainstream) overall Sony did a better presentation mostly do to the fact that their reveal was longer so they were able to reveal everything smoothly.
though MS did show Fifa/Madden/CoD I think the impact is little in favor to MS, the main stream know by now that these games are multplats(the favor that I will give MS is the exclusive content they got) the weak point of that as well was we saw no live gameplay og the games that MS unvieled which could mean they're saving for E3(most likely) or could also shine light on that rumor about MS being behind in some of their development teams.
I give MS major bonus point for showing their console, but (an soley my opinion) the services they showed weren't that impressive; now let me state that the Kinect was amazing, however; and this is my retail point of view; will a person who has say Netflix/Hulu/NFL pass/Internet explorer go out and buy atleast a $400 console and now have to pay a yearly subcription fee and now possible deal with connecting their device once everyt 24 hours?
thats' a huge turn off for me personally
Disappointed with most the comments here
Eh probably shouldn't be surprised though.
This isn't supposed to be about which console is "better" it's about comparing and contrasting the separate conferences and weighing in on their overall impact on the sales industry.
I'm an old school style member though so I realize a lot of deep sales and trends discussions have left these boards. Oh well.
I didn't think the Sony reveal was that amazing either. I'm a big fan of Turn 10 and Remedy so I was more impressed with XBox One reveal.

Sony's conference gave a far better taste of what is to come for the platform, especially when it comes to games. It felt more focused. KZ may look like "another shooter" but at this point don't they all??? Infamous continues to be a shining point of what is possible in an open world. The trailer was in-game, and particle effects being pulled off in that series are truly something to marvel......plus they are just great games. Knack was to appease a certain crowd that Sony finds themselves neglecting every so often, later interviews revealed something interesting about it. Sony says Knack felt riminicent of Crash Bandicoot, and thats what swayed them. We shall see on that of course. Drive Club is filling a void that will be left by no big racing title for the console just yet, but will be a perfect showcase of power. Nevertheless, they all felt like really solid Launch games, the kind of which you rarely see. Most console launches are terrible and only have 2 noteworthy titles at best. Sony assured that there is at least 4-5 there for you. Everything Sony talked about was just....positive. Other than no BC, there was not a single dark spot in it. Gamers like the idea of sharing, eliminating load times, being able to get to the games faster than ever, etc. MS, had way too many sour points like DRM and envasive tech holding their conf back. Would have liked to see something outside of MS's typical (COD and Forza....)Neither of their shown exclusives excited me or anyone really, and when you remove that it was just multiplats. |
Solid post. Thanks for the thought out response and I agree Sony definitely sold to the core gamer (us) better.
BenVTrigger said: But did Sony show anything that will rock the industry? That convinced the mass market to rush out and buy one? I dont really think so. In fact sony both didnt truly wow. They were honestly about the same just aimed at different sections of the market. |
and did M$? m$ is putting a camera n microphone in every Livin room!! They cant b turned off!! As I said b4, im not the paranoid type but surely everyone here understands the implications of this!! This is not okay!!
The PS4 reveal was for gamers, so for a gamer it was amazing. Now since MS now cater to the masses, this might not be the right place for what you are looking for.

Of course the 360 fan base is filled with casual / mainstream gamers. at least 50 million of the sold 360's were not sold to "core" gamers. |
Hey thank you for stating that. I've always thought so too.
That being said, I don't know if casuals will even like it. There are too many other devices that do what the X1 will. But yeah I agree that their focus definitely wasn't on the core gamer. Let's see if it works for them. :p
Sony didn't show anything major or surprising, except the RAM maybe. :p
But, at least I felt included. Most of the features they showed were features that I'm interested in. Which isn't the case for the Xbox reveal. I'm not interested in a lot of the things they showed, hell I don't think most of them even work where I'm from.

Basically, no they didn't. Everything they did with the TV services has been around for a while now, except they work in every country.
